How DC Jesse Minter's Defense Works | LA Chargers
Steven Haglund and Tyler Schoon of the Guilty as Charged podcast are bringing their insights and perspective to the LA Chargers podcast network! In this week’s episode, the hosts are joined by Cody Alexander of MatchQuarters to break down how new Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter’s defense works. Breaking down film from Michigan’s national championship run, Alexander explains how the Wolverines schemed answers for Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and why the Baltimore Ravens show that DC Minter’s defense is tailor-made for the NFL.

I'm late to this video but to address the nickel blitz against the chargers: my guess is that they were banking on any tackle opposite to slater (Storm or Pipkins) wasnt going to pickup well and chargers also didnt have any good blocking tight ends either.
HAHAHAHA Tyler is so fired up he can't contain himself! Same brother! Solid BOLT the whole time watching this!!! Thank you, reminds me of the good times.
Junior Colson would be an outstanding starting LB for this team. He’s my #1 LB in this class and he tends to be available in rounds 3-4

Big shout out to Cody Alexander 🔥
Love when you guys do these types of episodes. Always come away with some insights. Takeaways: Colson with Derwin vould be a nice pairing. More zone CBs and less pass rushing DTs. Makes it seem very hard for an offense to read the defense pre snap.

Colson might be my favorite fit overall
Its all about interrupting offensive timings. LOVE IT!
Well, you got Colson. Excellent show.
This was a fantastic pod. Goes into my teaching (me) file for defense. Subscribed to MatchQuarters.

Another amazing guest, really interesting to see the breakdowns and what to expect from the Minter defense.

That single high, rotate to cover2 with the edge flat dropping to the short field side is incredibly nasty work🤯🙏⚡
This is the right guy to have on! Great job fellas. I learned a lot.

Guilty of that myself, so I appreciate Cody being able to show vs tell (well, he did both)
Love the convo and the breakdown but you guys lost me when you all started devaluing LB's. They're are literally the heart and soul of the defense. They make a defense reach its full potential. They are not the RB's of the the defense.....They're the QB's of the defense!
Insanely knowledgeable ! Super impressive stuff guys!!

As a Michigan fan, I’ve just gotta say yes, yes you are
I feel like neither mack or bosa actually fit this scheme because they can’t drop into coverage. If we’re keeping tuli then we need to trade our two biggest assets and find edges that complement his game. Faster, smaller guys who can cover to truly take advantage of the way minter will confuse the protection and lead to sacks, pressures and bad throwing decisions. If we can accumulate draft picks we can grab some of these day 2 Michigan guys. Can you even imagine the coverage ability of a linebacker corps of Daiyan henly paired with junior colson?!
Thank you for explaining it so well with the film etc. Great job

Cody is the best!!!
Thanks, Cody, that was interesting!
Finally! Coaching matters. and teaching is at the forefront of connecting scheme and technique to outcome! The ability to transfer knowledge and understanding to players that translates to action on the playing field should be a foundational tenet to entrusting a coach to these responsibilities at the NFL level. Perhaps the light has come on for Dean Spanos in competing against Clark Hunt and Andy Reid. This staff is going to take the Chargers to the next level(s).

I think so too!
It will be interesting to see if Minter keeps playing a philosophy where he keeps the offense in front of D to stop the big plays making offenses drive the field making them impatient, forcing mistakes if they are not ready to play this type of football. NFL teams can run the mid-shorter plays all day and run if needed unlike some college teams. Ohio State thought they could make big plays on Minter with the WR talent, but Minter just had their number in their mid to deeper passing game.
My first question would be should the DC adjust his defense to the personnel they have or force the personnel to implement the scheme as best they can (and slowly draft/sign up players who fit the defensive scheme)?
One tiny bit of feedback, when you’re discussing plays please can you make the ‘window in window’ play full screen for those watching on mobile? Thanks
Such a great show, I have to listen to it again today!!!

Great content
I think you guys made perfect sense. I would be willing to get all the Michigan players from round 2 to 7. Afterwards I get them on practice squad too. It’s not easy to get a bunch of guys like that and teach them NFL defense at the age of 18 and 19. 😊

Would love several of the Michigan players on this roster for sure!
Thanks for the film, but non-experts need a pointer to see the positions cody referred to.
The question is, are Mack and Bosa going to be willing and able to play this versatile way at LB given how they made their bones before Harbaugh's staff?
Amazing!!!! Great interview!!🎉

Hey mom!
Great stuff!!!
Chargers got themselves a dawg in Minter…Mikey Sainristil was nothing short of a str8 baller these past 2 seasons since making the switch to corner. Best defenders are eligible next year Graham, Will Johnson, and Kenneth Grant…Go Blue 〽️
Great scheme but we still have no DB talent except Derwin and nobody is talking about it 😅😂

I think this new regime gets a leeway to build the defense to its full potential on year 1-2. As oppose to what Telesco/Staley tried to do but never accomplished.
The camera's speed isn't set high enough for Tyler's head nodding speed in approval of Cody's comments. It hurts my neck just watching Tyler. 🤣
Are we basing any of the mock drafts on the free agents that want to sign with the chargers?
let's go!
I’ll be impressed if they show that they can pressure Mahomes and shutdown Kelce ..anything less is 2nd place in the division
Bolt up
Listen to Minnesota Coach PJ Fleck PostGame conf..After Michigan destroyed them in Wk 6. He praises Michigan's D'. To hear how good Minter/Harbaugh D' is.

Thanks for the recommendation! Love when opponents can praise each other
I really hope the Chargers pick up Brock Bowers at 5 ... if you look at the dominant NFL super bowl teams since 2000, they have 1 thing in common ... Patriots and Chiefs had / have and generously utilize an ALL-WORLD TIGHT END ... I think Bowers can be that guy for the Chargers next year and that will just open up MORE opportunities for their solid WR corps
Yep I drank the Kool-Aid again.... ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️

Here's a face melter for you. Has anyone seen Justin throw since the broken finger on his throwing hand? What could we get for him? 3/4 this year and 1&2 next year?
I dont want to hear defensive guru or defensive genius in my lifetime ever again. Just play ball fam.
Minter scouted an awful Alabama center and exploited it ad nauseum.
Nope, good try. Still waiting for ALL IN video.
So what you mean to tell me is they’re gonna run the exact same defense that got us destroyed the entire Brandon Staley tenure? Fucking great

No... The Fangio & Ravens schemes are derivatives of Capers/LeBeau. Similar, but not the same. Different philosophies & pedagogy. Are there similarities, yes, but I think Minter & Macdonald have proven their variant of the Ravens scheme can be successful at the NFL level. It's like comparing Wink Martindale (ex-Giants DC) to Macdonald. Just not the same.
