Shazam! is one of my most anticipated comic book movies of 2019, and one I think will offer a much needed change in the DC film series. But it’s shocking to think that it’s taken until now for a Shazam movie to come to fruition, especially when you think of just how long the iconic character has existed for. In this video, I want to discuss the behind-the-scenes history of the former-Captain Marvel, the major adversity faced by his creators, and the amazing journey the character undertook in order to get in a position where a live-action adaptation is not just a possibility, but a highly anticipated reality.

As much as I enjoyed this video, your statement that it took the Crisis on Infinite Earths reboot to have Superman and Captain Marvel to meet disregards DC's publishing history. Superman and Shazam Captain Marvel met several times in the 1970s and 1980s, especially in the team-up series, DC Comics Presents 33, 34, 49, and Annual #3. There is also All New Collectors Edition No. C-58, May 1978, as well as Justice League of America vol. 1 #137 as well as a few issues of All-Star Squadron.

Hi, thanks for the comment. Yeah, in hindsight that might require a bit of clarification: DC did publish a handful of Superman/Shazam team-up issues before the book was cancelled (I think one of the last issues was dedicated to that, if memory serves me right), but it wasn't until Crisis where Shazam was fully folded into the DC universe. While it's true they had crossed paths a number of times before, it was after Crisis where they occupied the same space concurrently, if that makes sense?

I love the simple irony presented with Captain Marvel. He gets magical powers from a mage including the ability to cast spells like Shazam does and he effectively uses them to become a bruiser capable of equaling Superman. Just imagine if Billy decided to embrace the mage aspect of his powers for a bit.

I hate that they don't have proper Mr Tawny in New 52, with suits, canes and stuff. Also, New 52 design is kind of all over the place, especially the meaningless "tactic-lines" all over the body. What Morrison did in Multiversity and Parker did in Convergence is fantastic, what Johns did in New 52...meh, kinda cool.

I'm kinda shocked they haven't tried to bring Mr. Tawny into current continuity (besides the easter egg in the JL backups), and I don't mind the overall design of New 52 Shazam, but it does look unnecessarily 'busy' with all the lines, that seemed to be a weird design choice of the time, unfortunately.

Though, if I may - the character isn't "formerly Captain Marvel." DC didn't take any existing version of the character and changed the name. They simply created an entirely new one and called him, "Shazam." The original version is still called Captain Marvel (as are all other versions who went by that moniker) and he is still canon, thankfully.

That probably explains why this video is well-researched. Most videos tend to get at least one big thing wrong (typically a lot more), which I presume is usually the result of a few hours of internet research as opposed to a history of years of reading and digging up what one can about the character. And no worries, no confusion here!

Fawcett Comics should have won the Captain Marvel lawsuit. They had the Captain Marvel character and the Captain Marvel name first. That was really stupid of DC Comics for stealing the rights to the Captain Marvel character and changing Captain Marvel's name to Shazam. And that was really stupid of Marvel Comics for stealing the rights to the Captain Marvel name. DC and Marvel need to be sued. And by the way, Shazam is the name of the Wizard, not Billy Batson's alter ego. And the Shazam family is called the Marvel family. And one more thing: Billy Batson is 12 years old, not 15 years old. The reason why Billy Batson is 15 years old is because his origin was rewritten by DC Comics.

It's easy to see that now, but considering how rare super-powered heroes of his type were back then, it was probably much easier to accuse someone of copyright infringement. Incidentally, this is probably why Aquaman was such a weakling when he was created. Timely Comics already had the Submariner and making Aquaman in a manner that made sense given his origins (super strength, invulnerability, etc), writers probably worried it might open National (DC) Publishing to a Copyright lawsuit.

Since then my love has only grown after reading kingdom Come, the power of hope, the monster society of evil and animated appearances such as the JLU episode Clash and the Return of Black Adam short. And lest we forget Justice League Action. The Shazam movie was pretty good. I wouldn't call it the perfect portrayal but considering how I was shortening my life with stress over how it could have been considering how the rest of the DCEU was and that the director was only known for a horror film made me very concerned. That Nd the trailers reminded me too much of a story by Kick Ass writer called Superior. In the end I'm happy people liked it and it was a success. Billy Batson deserved to stand tall alongside the other best and most inspiring comic book heroes

DC Comics DID kill "Shazam ", AKA Captain Marvel. After they acquired the character it soon became clear that their legal position, that CM was just Superman in a RED suit, was actually how they saw the character. The obvious differences in the Billy Batson/ Captain Marvel and Clark Kent/ Superman dualities eluded most of the writers Julius Schwartz assigned to Cap, particularly Dennis O'Neil. To DC one superhero is just like another, with some being stronger than others. Only Nelson Bridwell understood Captain Marvel and Nelson's been dead for a long time.

Captain Marvel is the type of concept I don't understand how anyone can fuck up. A boy that get's the powers of God's and hero's of legends from an ancient wizard called Shazam, that grant him basically god hood and unlimited power for the sole purpose of being the ultimate champion of justice, Earths mightiest mortal. He can travel through time via the Rock of eternity which only he can access, has a book that shows him every event that has happened, fights aliens, demons, mad scientist and Venus frog's. He easily moved planet's and was faster than light, and probably had more experience than Superman and Batman combined. His villian gallery as goofy as it can be can be used way better than what DC has done, mainly using Black Adam and Sivanna, but not Oggar or Ibac. He doesn't have to be a jerk with a heart of gold like new52, he's always been more like what Brave and the bold did, he's a kid that when he transforms is an adult that still looks at everything with amazement and fun, like a big brother with good humor. So far, Thunderworld and Convergence:Shazam have gotten that right.

I have such mixed feelings about Captain Marvel being a name taken by Marvel Comics. On one hand, I prefer Billy be called Shazam. On the other, I think it's kinda lame that he lost his identity because a company was too scared of their brand being tampered with outside of their knowledge. On a completely different 3rd hand, I like how over half a century later, the naming scheme Marvel came up with created a window for Kamala to be introduced and for Carol to step into further popularity.

@Owen Likes Comics Shazam/Captain Marvel is one of my top 3 favorite superheroes of all time, and I am LEGIT scared for this movie maan... :S:S The character has so much potential, and not only in comedy (he is literally just a kid... If you have ever seen a little spoiled boy getting angry at his mom in the supermarket or something, now imagine that with superman-like powers. Or imagine how emotional a generic scene could be, where a bad-guy its beating the hero like hell, but in this case the hero its a 14 years old kid...) I will never forget that moment in the Roy Thomas era of the comics, when Black Adam tricked Shazam using his child-like personality, and killed an innocent woman in front of him... How Shazam started to cry like a little boy in shock, and how he porceeded to beat the life out of black adam while destroying half of Metropolis, still crying like a baby... Let me tell you, that scene was scariest than any evil version of superman that Ive ever seen... xDxD Im all in for the comedy, its NECESSARY in a Shazam movie, but I also hope they do some of the most deep and emotional stuff from the comics. Just a couple of serious scenes, you know.

Speaking of comebacks, Shazam is very much in good company with Wonder Woman and Aquaman as one of the heroes who for decades DC neglected/ignored/treated as jokes/afterthoughts only to become the very characters to gain critical and financial success after the failure of the Superman/Batman/Suicide Squad/Justice League experiment. To say that this development is hilarious in hindsight would be a marvelous (pun intended) understatement.

There are some aspects of what DC Put into the character of Billy Batson and his world that was enjoyable, but making him more rougher and realistic and losing the innocent and charm is what lost me as a reader.

Honestly while Shazam (the movie) seems a little too silly for me I still hope it does well because while I haven't read any of the comics yet, there is just something about Captain Marvel that makes me like him. He's a kid who gets the powers of six mythological figures that puts him on par with Superman but unlike Superman, he's still a kid mentally and also unlike Superman, he's is more of a man playing a God than a god playing a man (not saying Superman doesn't have humanity, just saying he's a god like alien full time where as Billy has to transform into his super form). Really the character is so intriguing that I have been thinking about some storylines I'd try for the character if given the chance, and I honestly refrain from calling him Shazam as much as I can because I feel he is more worthy of the Captain Marvel name than the Marvel versions, no offense to most of them. He's a cool concept for a character and he also has a cool villain in Black Adam. I hope he gets more popular so we can see more stuff from him and DC can put their A game into his comics. I get really annoyed when it seems like he's fodder for Superman to beat up.

I still remember the Saturday morning live action series, where he existed in the universe that also had isis. I remember the show crossover, and how much I looked for any Shazam comics while I collected as a child, and an adult. I always wondered why Marvel had to be such a dick, and legally forced DC to rename the character. I'm so sorry that Marvel couldn't have bought the character, and run the stories under the Marvel publishers, but Marvel publishing chose to be dicks about it. I am so glad that DC finally bought complete control from Fawcett, and I'm really glad that that big Shazam guy can push Billy out of the way when lightning strikes. Sorry. That was a joke that I remember, the idea that Shazam would appear when lightning struck Billy, and so the jokes sprung up that Shazam would just push belly out of the way. :) Yes, I understood completely that Shazam and Billy were the same person, even reading the comics published by Fawcett, and I even loved the other members of the Marvel family, including the uncle. ;)
