What I've heard from developers was this thing actually worked exactly as advertised which is why it's still used for so many engineering products over the years and to this day. The colossal failure wasn't the hardware, but the horrible dev tools. Microsoft aparently made it a nightmare to make the sensors work as intended and developers inevitably had to take shortcuts to release games on time. The reason you see sensors on instagram and snapchat filters working so well now isn't because the tech improved. It's actually using the same tech that was in the kinect from the start. They just took the time to properly write the code.

I'm not sure about that, VR use a lot of different technologies, only some of them use camera tracking, and it was something that already existed before kinect, mostly in the animation industry. sure Kinect was a trailblazer in a way, nowadays you can do what the kinect was trying to do with your phone without even needing stereoscopic camera, but I'm pretty sure the technology would be fine without the kinect, maybe it would just be a bit slower to come to popularity because of a lack of a commercial push.

Microsoft was a victim of its own success with the Kinect. They sold so many in such a short time during the 360 era, that they came to the conclusion that they had a legitimate hit on their hands. Combined with real data showing that people had been using their 360 on their living room TV to watch all kinds of media on disc and through apps (I watched tons of Netflix on mine, plus sports on the ESPN app, and so on). The timing was perfect with the Xbox One in development, and the pressure from products like Apple TV (which seemed at the time like a threat to take over the living room media experience - by this time MS had become really paranoid about Apple’s resurgence and their own string of failures in mobile and other products), and MS really thought it had a trend to jump in front of. All the data supported them. And then they went and tried to pitch this whole vision at E3 to a room full of people who only cared about games, and they set it on fire. Wrong message to the wrong audience. If they had stuck to a gaming-centric message to that crowd, and then quietly marketed the media capabilities to a broader, more casual audience, they might have had a much better time of it. Playstation did exactly that and, well..

Even then I'm not sure all of the focus on media capability was a good idea considering that most people prefer to use smartphones rather than PiP and also Smart TVs were popping up that didn't require you buy a $500 console to play Netflix. And they didn't even get the TV functionality right from a technical perspective. On 50Hz programs like you'd see in Europe the TV signal looked more choppy when passed through an Xbox. At the launch of XBox One, Microsoft was announcing predictions of 1 billion unit sales. Which would have been (at the time) be more than all console sales in history combined, going back to the original Pong system. I think it's safe to say they were a bit optimistic. My take was that they thought that, in Kinect, they had managed to create the next touchscreen--that is, the Kinect interface would do to the TV market what touchscreens did to phones. In marketing terms, this is technically known as "huffing your own farts."

The main problem in opinion is that the games were poorly developed. A lot of them just asked you to move your hand, or do the same movements over and over. Games like kinect sports that were multiplyier and forced you to do a lot of different moves with your whole body were the best.

A smoke machine, a disco ball, a subwoofer, and booze is all it took for me to throw wildly successful Meetup Group parties. Non gamer women loved it. Hence local guys loved it, and the brave ones would join in on the dancing. It also helped that I lived near a seasonal ski resort and that there were a lot of strippers in the area. I also had a full Rock Band setup to switch over to as the evening wore on. Recently passed the whole setup to a friend who has a couple kids interested in dance. They absolutely love it and have learned a lot of early 00 dance moves.

It is really interesting how Nintendo hit a home run with the Wii’s motion controls, stumbled with Wii U, and Switch’s motion controls became lukewarm. Xbox tried to Kinect but failed; whilst PlayStation had a wiimote copy too, and decided to innovate further with PS VR

The Kinect was amazing. It suffered the reality that all niche peripherals do: games designed around them only function if the peripheral continues to be supported and lock out anyone without the peripheral. It was an amazing piece of hardware and made some of the best games in their genres (Just Dance pales in comparison to Dance Central). It's a shame about the realities of hardware manufacturing and the limitations of game design given a niche control method, but there was a lot of potential there and I'm sad to see it die.

Yeah. They tried to remedy that by making it mandatory with every Xbox One. The best selling peripheral could push hardware sales and everyone would have one so developers wouldn't have a problem supporting it. Unfortunately, the casual ship had sailed by late 2013. Even the Wii had stagnated.

The ONE thing I will give this dumb system: Buying the Kinect and the first three Dance Central games was still less expensive than buying a treadmill, and more engaging. That said, it's not like dancing games were exclusive to Microsoft. This was just how it worked for *me*.

Ironically the Kinect lives on, not as a motion gaming device, but for things other than gaming. I've seen a couple of military drones(specifically land drones) use this, ghost hunting tools for motion detection, 3d scanning for static objects(though kinect 2 has been used for moving objects), motion capture in smaller indie dev studios. The Kinect is actually a great piece of tech and can be a more affordable alternative to similar devices that will usually cost thousands if not hundred thousands more to get and install. Obviously it will not perform on par or better than ones built specifically for motion capture, but for the price and a bit of tweaking, it can be amazing.

Kinect probably would have lived on as a popular accessory for those who enjoyed dancing, fitness and party games. When they tried to force every Xbox One owner to have one though, that was too far. The Kinect 2 was a huge improvement over the Kinect 1 so it's a shame many never got to try it.

I actually liked the Kinect. I liked controlling stuff on the screen by waving rather than finding wherever I put the controller. But I defiitely like the Kinect as a 3D scanner - the 360 Kinect works well as a low-price scanner for static objects, and the Xbone variant can be used for some middling-to-decent entry-level motion capture.

I missed out on the launch of Kinect, so a few years backs I grabbed one for cheap at a thrift store and some games to give it a go. Most were eh to bad, but there was one that stood out to me. Fantasia Music Evolved is a fantastic rhythm game by Harmonix. They found a way to make their brand of unique rhythm games work by just flailing your arms. The controls made me feel like I was back in my high school band and I was the conductor, of course with Disney magic added in. Highly recommended to anyone remotely interested in the Kinect.

I will never understand why every single attempt to crib off the wii's motion controls latched on to everything *but* the one truly revolutionary feature, the IR pointer. The wii's IR pointer was unambiguously great and filled a well-defined game-play niche (aiming). You ask anyone, anyone, who spent hours and hours of their life playing shooter like the conduit 2 and goldeneye remake online, you ask them if they used stick or the pointer... The pointer conferred a huge advantage! I remember going over to my friends' house to play some splitscreen in goldeneye remake right after it came out and he was using the pack-in gold pro controller (it did look absolutely ballin). So of course I was using wiimote & nunchuck. I'd never been very good at FPS games, but after maybe 7 or 8 rounds straight of me winning, he decided that the twin-sticks were putting him at a disadvantage and boom. he was back in the fight. and then you have the playstation and xbox motion control solutions which have all of the gimmicky, inaccurate, gesture based gameplay of the wii's crummy little accelerometer but none of the precise, fast aiming that the IR pointer gave. At least gyro aim is now available as an option in most major titles on the switch or on steam through steaminput. It's better than twinsticks, but it's not as good as the IR pointer. It makes me sad that the greatest innovation of the motion control era is basically dead. It could come back; all you would need is a tiny camera-- literally the same chip as the light/proximity sensor on most smartphones-- embedded in the front of the controller, between the triggers. But, I know that's vanishingly unlikely. For now I'll have to make do with gyro aim as the only legacy of this very experimental period in gaming history.
