How Dangerous Is Your Epoxy Resin?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you've ever used resin, or are thinking of using it in the future, this is information you can't live without.
Here it is, the honest truth:
most epoxy resins on the market are really bad for you.
Do you actually know if the resin you’re using can cause cancer?
Reproductive harm or respiratory distress?
Do you know if it’s corrosive or not?
How can you tell which resins are safe and which are dangerous?
And just how dangerous are they?
The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is where you'll find the important information you need in order to stay safe.
ArtResin co-founder Rebecca Zak is here to teach you how to be a smart resin consumer. She is going to show you how to interpret a safety data sheet, what to look for, and how to spot the red flags.
This information could literally save your life.
For more information on our safety certification and to read our SDS, please see our blog How Dangerous Is Your Epoxy Resin?

Although there are no VOC’s (the resin I use also doesn’t have VOCs), that doesn’t mean that no harmful fumes are emitted. Some people can, and do, react to them. Wearing a respirator is always a good idea. Everyone is different and it’s still recommended to wear a NIOSH approved respirator.

It is true, a small percentage of the population can develop allergies to epoxy resin as well as sensitivities. We always recommend working within your comfort zone and wearing extra PPE if it makes you more comfortable.

@@kay_ana ArtResin was developed as a surface coating rather than a deep pour/casting resin and is meant to be poured in thin layers. You can use ArtResin in some of your smaller casting applications, we just recommend pouring in layers less than 1/4" at a time. Shallow layers help reduce bubbles from being trapped in the more viscous coating resin and it also helps reduce the likelihood of a flash cure if too much heat is generated.

I started using epoxy resin for the first time about a month ago...I won't name the brand but it said that it had zero VOCs & low odor - so I thought that it would be safe to use...but I was mistaken! I used the epoxy (while wearing a 3M mask) and after I was done pouring the epoxy on a table top that I had made I found it difficult to breathe (for about 2 days). I had purchased 2 gallons of that epoxy and had lots left over but after that experience I gave it away...My health was more important. I decided to do some research for a safer option and that's how I found out about the ArtResin brand. So I purchased 2 gallons of Art Resin and used it...I wore a mask to be safe and I was happy that the table came out amazing, and more importantly I could breathe properly! This had no effect on my lungs...I will still continue to wear a mask with this resin, and it was also more expensive than the original epoxy that I purchased but I really don't care, my health is more important.

@@Artresin Whenever I see people who use resin and they aren't using something that is pretty safe like Artresin I tell them about the hazards and the PPE they need to be wearing. Most people get a bit mad...Saying they don't have to wear it if they don't want to- So it's very frustrating that people are so stuck up on their right to choose instead of just listening ... I myself was scared of using resin at first. But I watched like 4 hours of safety videos before I even bought the resin lol. And I don't live alone plus I have pets so I made sure to of course take them into consideration. That is why I made the choice to switch to Artresin. Yes it is more expensive but quality and safety cost more money and that's ok. I would rather pay a bit more now compared to having to deal with lasting health issues and hospital bills. And I hope people wise up and realize that and just go buy and wear a respirator and proper PPE or go get a safer resin.

I have always wanted to use resin and have read extensively regarding its safety. This is really a video and I love your honesty. I have been hesitant to try resin, and ArtResin is convincing me to try it. A few questions before I buy the product 1) it says to work in a place with a well-ventilated area. My living room is spacious and has a window open and I will open my door too. Does this consider a well-ventilated area? 2) since I will be doing resin in my living room, does it mean that it won't affect my family members who live with me too? They are okay to walk around and breathe in the air when I am doing the resin? 3) Can I just wear a surgical mask (used for COVID) and not a respirator? Hope to hear from you soon :)

  • @Artresin

Thanks for your message. A well ventilated space doesn't require any special ventilation system, just work in an open area with some fresh air circulating as opposed to closing yourself off in a closet for example. Your living room as you describe it sounds perfect. ArtResin has been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and has been designated non-toxic when used as directed and safe for home use in a well ventilated area. There are no fumes or VOCs to cause danger to yourself or your family. If you are following proper directions for use, a respirator is not required. ArtResin does not have fumes or VOCs so it doesn't pose a health threat when used as directed. We recommend keeping your furry family members away from your ArtResin project, its sticky and I guarantee you will find some pet hair in your pour if they are sharing the room with you. If you have a separate room you can close the door to, that is best.

Those chemical fillers are often toxic and can cause major health concerns. The ArtResin formula is pure--all of the ingredients in its formula react leaving nothing to be off gassed as toxic fumes or VOCs. We have also invested in completing numerous safety compliance tests which most epoxy brands do not do.

As a chemist for 40 years, I must inform that companies regularly "scrub" SDS to remove negative information. Although there is a GHS (Global Harmonization Standard) to outline the 16 sections, many manufacturers do not fully disclose the ingredients of their products, citing "trade secrets". Also there are only a few hundred ingredients that have been fully tested and evaluated by anyone. The balance of the ingredient comments and projections are excerpts and references to the ingredient types that have been tested. Best advice: Don't get it on you or in you!

Thats a great question Pam. If you are using the torch as instructed and just passing it lightly over the surface of your poured resin, it simply reduces the viscosity of the resin thus lowering the surface tension so that the bubbles pop. The fumes come from the ingredients in the formula, so if the resin you are using is safe and free from fumes and toxic chemicals as ArtResin is, you have nothing to worry about.
