How Creatine Benefits Brain Function

On today’s episode, Dr. Nick talks about creatine and its importance for brain health. Creatine is a molecule that is part of the phosphagen system for making energy (ATP) in cells. This system is used for quick energy, for instance, supplying necessary energy to muscles during power lifting or sprinting. However, creatine is also used by brain cells for energy, especially in times of stress. The brain has a creatine pool that it can use when needed. Often, this pool is insufficient because the body uses creatine daily, but the diet does not supply enough to replenish. Over time, especially in aging, this leads to deficiency. Enough creatine can be obtained from the diet by eating about one pound of meat or fish per day, but people rarely meet this level. Therefore, creatine supplementation can be used preventatively before acute stress or injury so that there is better recovery. Also, it is used therapeutically for post-concussion, post-stroke, neurodegeneration, dysautonomia, depression to improve brain function and decrease symptoms of fatigue, brain fog, and focus issues. Check out the video for more in depth information on how creatine can improve your brain health!

I was diagnosed with Parkinson's about three years ago and have found that creatine has improved my situation. Progression of the disease has slowed significantly, I've regained some cognitive ability and my tremors have stabilized. Given that there are few if any side-effects and it is generally considered to be a very safe supplement it's probably worth anyone trying it. One data-point (mine) counts for very little but I thought I'd just share my experiences.

As someone who has suffered from chronic depression for 30 plus years, i only recently started taking creatine, at a low dosage of 3g per day, so far its been 3 months. I do take into consideration my work outs may be responsible for my better moods but things have improved drastically using creatine. My depression and dark thoughts have completely gone, i cant remember the last time i had a depressive thought, it seems to be working almost...too well, on top of that it has also helped my attention span, i struggled to process information particularly, the written word, would need to read something 3-4 times to process the information, now i can read a page and process the information as normal, im even learning a foreign language, i cant rate this stuff high enough, if everyone on earth was on this i wonder what it would be like.

@@Exodus26.13Pi it's very hard honestly. So far the gym helps with sleep. I get up at 5am and by 5:30 I'm on the weights pushing myself, by 7pm I'm too sleepy and exhausted, so that helps cause I dont need pills to aid my sleep. As for the Anxiety and other struggles, I have not felt much of a change, iv given myself 6 months. Hopefully il be cured. Anxiety is a given, it's something that will always be there in humans, I just want to feel alive and aware again. Depersonalization is the worst.

I haven't eaten meat in 8+ years and only started supplementing with creatine a month ago because of the recent craze. Yet I have always been very athletic and never had much of an issue with performance in various types of sports or brain function really. What are the pitfalls from years of having that system depleted if you're saying you can only get our proper creatine intake by eating a pound of meat a day, yet for some reason I seem to be unaffected? Genuinely curious.

This is excellent. I'm trying to find information out there about treating the root cause of central sleep apnea. I was wondering if there was a link between the use of atorvastatin and depletion of CoQ10 and somehow I ended up here. Creatine supplementation sounds like it can't hurt. Do you have any information on central sleep apnea? If not, I'd love to request that you cover the topic. There doesn't seem to be much out there. Thank you, Dr. Nick!

Recommended creatine is 2 grams daily for dietary intake. If supplementing for the gym etc the recommendation is 5 grams a day. Have just started watching the video so this information comes from the FDA for the 2 grams and from supplement companies for the 5 grams.

@@xHustleHaRdx This is not scientifically sound at all. You do not simply “burn” all the creatine you consume during a workout. Creatine consumption in the body is a chemical process; it has a half life and duration. In the first 8 hours only 1/4 of the value decays. Basically it will stay in your body for over a day whether you exercise or not, and the residual effects will stay even longer if your muscles are properly saturated.
