How Cooling System Works In Car Engines

Ғылым және технология

A dramatization of the cooling system of the automobile, showing how the water circulates around the cylinders, cooling them and in turn being cooled by the air drawn in through the radiator. Water Boy (1936)

I really enjoy watching these old Chevrolet mini-docs, great how everything is so thoroughly explained, no wonder why chevy was one of the most popular and reliable car of its day. #ChevyRunsDeep

The music with the car and trailer, I was expecting some bandits to jump out and jack them. And the narrator to say, "Say, what's the big idea."

+hotpapayasalad But thermostats are mechanical. what does that have to do with sensors and computers?

correct. keep in mind due to the pollution in the air, modern car these days have temperature sensor that monitor engine temps therefore allowing more fuel to be deliver depending the commands of the ECU.

There was a primitive kind of "bellows" thermostat that was developed in the 1930s. The wax-disk type thermostat was popularized in the 1950s. Keep in mind that companies like VW were still making air cooled engines into the 1960s, so what particular technology you find would depend on the company. Apparently Chevy was not big on thermostats in 1936. As for the 21st century ECU (computer) regulated cooling loop... they can actually get rid of the thermostat and have the ECU directly control an electric coolant pump... however there are still thermostats since some cars will still have a mechanically driven water pump, and also the coolant is being used in multiple circuits now to cool turbos, engine oil, etc. so you end up having multiple thermostat controls which regulate the flow in each circuit.

SpectatingGamer Same principal but instead of water, ambient air (obviously) is being used fire cooling the engine down. notice the fins in your engine's exposed casing.
