I think if this were a manga, keeping the “… actually this isn’t worth it” would be really powerful. It would be a side to a story where it’s like “yeah I’m good at a thing, but does it make me happy? Does the environment make me happy?” And especially with the buildup of the training arc and the rival, all of that would be subverted when you say “right but I’m not happy. And I get to choose how my life goes, not some old guys.” I don’t know that would be pretty powerful I think :)

I would love it if at the start of the anime, everyone else is super interested in chess and the MC doesn't really care but they just kept winning until they get higher and things get more difficult and they never study chess like Conor, don't write notes or learn so in order to go higher they have to start playing it professionally because geniuses is made of 1% Talent and 99% Hardwork. Also showing that some of the rich kids and prodigy who'd been practicing chess their whole life don't even enjoy or like it because it was forced upon them by their parents who wants it for better resume and image. It could even show the abuse of the coaches, overstudying, burnout, toxic environment and the predatory relationship between coaches and students 14:39 Never get praises for winning, only "good job" or "you may have won but don't get cocky" but if you made one tiny mistake or make a move under 5 minute because you didn't think long enough, the coach will chew you out like they would be screaming at you, rinsed your move, making you feel like shit. They will only praises you if you make it a living hell for the opponent, like the 13 yo girl that Conor mentioned. Imagine an episode like that in the anime, when 30 minute in, the MC already know that they will lose but they can't quit so they have to dragged it out for hours and make it awkward for the other person and making moves just to cockblock and annoy them. The MC hate it, it's just like torture. When it's over and they come back to the team, everybody is cheering like "Congratulation, you really make it hell for that 13 yo" and the MC don't feel great, they don't want to make the opponent feel bad and they couldn't even comfort them. They just lost, they got a stalemate, they worked for hours for a stalemate. The difference between casual and professional chess. When the MC was still playing casual, it was easier, less stress and more fun. But when they start playing professional, it got tired and toxic and less enjoyable. The MC quit chess because they were scarred from the experience. The MC will say to their best friend "You know, if i got into chess later in life, i probably would have a more healthy learning and enjoyment of the game". The ending will be sad, where the MC loses their love of chess in the superficial professional circuits, but the epiloge where we find them in a bar playing chess casually while having a conversation with their best friend who's the 2nd best player years later made up fof it. Bonus: Also in an early episode where the MC is just chilling, looking at his phone and just beat this 80 year old man nonchalantly @PoeticSonic comment about MC's dad used to be a legendary chess player would be perfect

Nope, Connor's arc hasn't ended yet. When he's older, Connor will come across this overtly enthusiastic Japanese kid who wants to be the ultimate grandmaster and Connor will see himself in the kid, the kid initially underestimates Connor but seeing him pwn some random grandmaster whom the kid idolizes makes the kid decide to make Connor his coach, but Connor doesn't want to because of his disenchantment with the tournament scene, he will eventually relent after seeing the kid's honesty, they'll rise from a small town and like in any other good student-mentor relationships they both learn life lessons from each other, Connor is the kooky mentor archetype trying all sorts of unorthodox tactics, all of this in order to make the kid a world champion. I can already feel the feels.

I feel like Connor’s story reads more like an antagonist or rival character. Like he straight up doesn’t care but just is good at the game and the main character who is dedicating his life to it has to beat him. The whole story reminds me of that one guy in Baby Steps who liked to paint pictures on the court except instead of drawing between matches he played Pokémon.

The fact that he brought up his bully, who he said was really good at chess, I'm picturing like mid-tier antagonist that the protagonist has to struggle to beat while connor can just play chess super well intuitively, but it pushes the protag enough that once the protag beats connor, he's now prepared for the bully character, and the protag and connor bond over disliking the bully character, and then connor's super aloof about his loss and not really caring about chess anyway but wishes the protag luck in beating the bully

Still ...because of Connor knowing his secret he keeps an eye on him and with time Connor starts recognizing the importance and joy that chess can bring on and the Bully, with the help of Connor, would start to open more and see life in a new light. ... ... ... they kiss.marry and have two kids. This reminds me so much of that time I unknowingly beat the provincial champion of Super Smash Bros Melee back in my early twenties. My roommate invited the champion over because he happened to be a friend. I didn't know he was champion of anything, but I'd seen him destroy in CoD lobbies so I knew he was at least decent at games. Also my roommate was pushing hard to become a pro Starcraft II or Leagues of Legends player at the time. In short I knew both were pretty hardcore gamers, but I didn't know one of them had won a bloody provincial tournament not two years ago. And then there was me, a guy who just played video games for fun, including Smash for a hefty fraction of my childhood. A couple other people show up, roommate be like "let's Smash" and they boot up the Gamecube. And I'm like "Hey cool, Smash, haven't played this game in a while. Can I hop in?" Now full context, all of them had no idea I had any talent at games. They knew I played games occasionally and I usually preferred solo story driven stuff like RPGs. I'm not that competitive of a guy. And it had been *years* since I last touched Smash. All of them played regularly still, but even though they all thought I was nowhere near their level, they were pretty cool about it and allowed me turns at playing the game with them. The only two characters I mostly remembered were Marth and Link, so I picked Marth who was kinda my off-main. I remembered his moveset being pretty straightforward so I thought he'd make for an easier time easing myself back into the game. First round I played was a 4 player Free for All melee with items and all that good casual stuff. Warm up game for everyone basically. I won it decisively, mostly because the other 3 guys (champion wasn't in on this game) were too busy killing each other off to worry about little old me getting re-accustomed to the controls. Also I lucked out and got an easy 3 kill with the hammer at one point. Still they didn't expect the rusted *newbie* to win. All four guys be like "Duel me right now, Final Destination, 3 lives each, no items." And I'm like "Okay." First I beat the weakest of the four players, one of the two other friends who arrived after Champion Guy. He's an hyper aggressive Fox player. I zone him out with Marth's superior melee reach no problem. After losing his first life without landing one decent blow on me, he starts to get defensive and using range to whittle me down. I ignore the laser pistol damage and go in for two quick extra kills and win the match 3-0. Next is the second extra, who's a very defensive and patient Zelda/Sheik player who wants me to fight him on Temple. He gave me a very hard time since I was playing Marth still who has exactly zero range capability. Always trying to retreat and bombard from afar that guy. I narrowly win the match 3-2. Now they're starting to take me seriously. Roommate goes in with his Captain Falcon and gets absolutely demolished 3-1 on Coneria. Then Champion Smash player be like "Now that I've seen you beat 3 opponents with your Marth, I can easily counter you entire playstyle. Let me wipe the floor with you with my Ganondorf." Back on Temple for this final bout. Only then did I realized I was playing someone on an entirely other level. My roommate and the two extras can't hold a candle to him when he gets serious. He knows the game inside out, can abuse a half dozen glitches he calls "tech moves" which I didn't even knew existed and absolutely ravaged my Marth in less than 2 minutes of non-stop sublime comboing. And I'm like "Wow you're good at this. Let me switch to my main." Everyone : NANI!? That _wasn't_ your main? Me : Nah, my main for most of my childhood Smash career was Link. I only played Marth about 5-10% of the time. But now that I've warmed up from years of not playing with about 5 rounds of Smash, let me see if I can beat this last guy with Link. Champion : Wait you mean YOUNG Link right? Link sucks. Young Link is the only one who's got competitive potential. Me : Nope. I am a Main OG Adult Link player. Pick any character you want, I'm gonna beat you with my Link. Champion : ...Alright, then you'll have to face my own main ; Fox (because of course, they all main frigging Fox when they get "serious".) We do a re-match on Coneria. Link Vs Fox. Our range game is about equal. He gets a lot of laser hits in, but I manage to play around his deflector with bombs and fake outs, predict and exploit his tendency to overuse the move and somehow land first blood. He quickly finishes my damaged Link with a well-placed aerial kick and reset the match 1-1. We both lay off the range game for a while and just beat the shit out of each other in melee. I'm starting to pick up on his "tech moves" as the match goes on and ask him how he does one of them in particular which seems impossible ; a ledge recovery glitch that allows him to exploit a few frames of invulnerability that he times with my attempt to smash him off the map. To his credit, he's pretty gracious about it and teaches it to me on the spot. By the end of the bout, I managed to clutch the win by reproducing the same glitch on him and quickly blowing his Fox off the map one final time. Everyone in the room is like "YOU JUST BEAT A SMASH CHAMPION! WHO ARE YOU, AND WHY ARE YOU A GOD?!" Only then did my roommate thought it wise to mention Champion Guy had won a provincial level tournament of Smash. I'm like "No way." They show me a picture of Champion Guy receiving 5000$ in prize money. My only reply was "Look, I just played Link for 3 years straight okay. My dedication to that one character is what bridged the gap here." But Champion insisted I was a natural at it, and if I put my mind to it I could master all the other characters. We kept playing for the rest of the evening. Champion decided to become a teacher and show us all of his tricks, and coach me a little on how to play Young Link. Then I went on to perfect my Marth over the course of a few weeks of regular play with the guys and started expanding into the whole rooster of characters. One year later I was at least as competent with all characters as I was with Link on that night I first beat the Champion. Him and me played hundreds, if not thousands of bouts during that time, improving immensely as rivals until one day the Gamecube bricked and we sadly had to move on to other games. He introduced me to CoD Black Ops 2 (PS3 version) and within two months we were casually dominating public lobbies on split screen Team Deathmatches, racking up an average of 30 kills each in 75 kills to win 6v6 games. Good times. Anyway this turned into a way longer rant than I initially anticipated, but basically the gist of it is I can get really good at games when I put my mind to it, but most of the time I can't be bothered. Also I'm older now and carpal tunnel syndrome killed any chance I might've had at competitive gaming... Big sad. PS : I kept the names of the people in this story purposefully vague in order to preserve their anonymity.

Some of my friends were in too so at the start I was just having fun competing but at some point my mom wanted me to do nothing but math equations for the entire day, took my videogames and threatened to punish me severally if I lost on purpose (since she was noticing an attitude from me). Parents really do kill passion. I'm not great at piano naturally but I have good memorization skills so like I could copy what other people would do on the piano and be able to replicate it pretty spot on after a few tries. I cant read sheet music at all and Im shit at theories, but like if I watched a KZread video of someone playing the piano, I'd like be able to copy them no problem. I got prizes within my community for my piano playing and my dad just forced it so hard. I had to practice the piano every day at the exact same time and I wasn't allowed to look at anything other than the piano books. Which I obviously couldn't read. I'd legit spend an hour just replaying things over and over and over again. It completely destroyed it for me cause it just became a chore. It's been over 10 years since I last played piano, though I do still enjoy watching piano videos.

There are some stories that are so absurd that you think you could only hear about them in an anime when they're trying to hype a character up, like how the world champion beat 10 people at the same time while looking the other way. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYiZps2ygbjIqbw.html

Although I was never pressured to win by coach or parents (cause its just we boys organising an event), the environment was still very intense. I felt like *for every move I make my heart skips a beat* .... At this point it was kind of too much pressure for me. I wasn’t here to play for my country, I was just playing for fun. But this was not fun for me anymore. So I dropped. I didn’t even play the finale cause that's when the pressure is at its peak. I felt like I'm more comfortable in losing rather than going through one more super intense match.

Ok this will be an anime lasting 24 episodes, this isn't entirely accurate btw Episode 1: Introduction to mc, 8 years old, not really interessted chess but is really good and plays with his dad. The mc tries to get into the chess club but they don't allow the mc however outside of the club he beats their best player and is then invited into the club for a day and beats everyone in the club however isn't allowed to stay in the club since he isn't old enough. Episode 2: Skip to 4 years later, the mc is 12 years old and part of the chess club, and is now competing with other schools and introduces the mc's rival with roughly the same skill level as him, in this episode they beat all the other teams and leaves the final game (against the previous winners of 10 years in a row) to episode 3. Episode 3: The fight against the winners of this tournament for the previous 10 years. Ends with them winning and their coach inviting them to the nationals. Episode 4: The first 2 rounds the mc and his rival has in the preliminaries finishes with his rival losing the game and being out of the tournament but will provide moral support him in future games. Episode 5: The next 2 rounds of the preliminaries are done quickly and it is mainly the game between him and the ace of the team the mc beat in episode 3, which ends in a draw. Episode 6: The next round in the tournament Episode 7: The finals Episode 8: An invitation to be in a team in the world championships, their ace was his old bully and there is flashbacks. Episode 9-14: Various rounds in the world championships until the finals. Episode 15: The final game, against someone who is talented and trains hard, the mc loses. Episode 16: Skip to 10 years later, the mc is 22 years old and has quit chess after that loss but is now getting back into it, joining a bar chess club and beating everyone, with humor about how the mc looks meek compared to everyone else looking bulky and intimidating. Episode 17: The mc does a chess battle against an ex grandmaster and he wins getting himself the job. Episode 18: The mc gets convinced to rejoin the team and participate in the world championships. Episode 19: The mc fights a female grandmaster which he draws against and she will now provide morale support with him in future games, along with possible romance. Episode 20-24 Game against the person who beat the mc in episode 15 who is now the world champion. In episode 24 the world champion offers a draw which after a lot thought, the mc declines which causes the mc to lose

I remember when my friend got me to start playing chess when is got to high school. It began as a toss up for who won between us, but I became consistent in beating him. We joined the chess club and it didn't take long for me to become the second best player. The number one player was a senior, while i was still a freshman. He used to absolutely demolish me, but I started forcing draws between us. I've only beaten him once, and that was because he messed up and sacrificed the wrong piece. I stuck with it for a couple years, even popping up occasionally after I quit, before moving on to the wrestling club. I know for sure I wouldn't make it professionally, but I still enjoy chess to this day

Connur talking chess reminds me of the difference between watching supreme commander and starcraft as "e-sports". supcom being a larger scale and more stand-off tactics game (with nukes, a king-unit and late game surn-arounds) you are expected to fight to the bitter end even if your base is in pieces and your enemy is flying in with 3-4 top-end gunships that can individually waste unsupported armies, it's an ordeal/war-movie. You drag it out, fuck with your opponents as best possible and Starcraft on the other hand you are expected to (rage)quit fairly early due to the entire game being swung by early-game activities. Someone gets ahead and then they are expected to do sensible things from there on to stay and capitalise on that advantage ahead despite (usually) limited information on the opponent. so some tournament players DRAG. THAT. SHIT. OUT. no irritating flank-attacks to petty, no building/unit too remotely hidden, no mutual mass-army-wipe that can't be followed up by a swarm of basic units to prolong a faltering economy. these games can be a joy to watch (in playback with highlight reels and full control of the fast forward function) but they an also be the most mentally hazardous viewing/playing experiences when done live and you don't quite know what mood/tactic the opponent will end up deploying this round at 10p.m.into a 6 a.m. start tournament and all you want to do is go to the loo then shower, then down a pint of absinthe then collapse onto your shitty hotel bed.
