How Colonizing Space Can Save Earth

Ғылым және технология

Many believe we need to colonize space to get all of our eggs out of one basket, in case something should happen to Earth, but colonizing space might be the best way to protect and preserve our world.

I appreciate that you made the point that most people don't consider when talking about space colonization, that we can spread life. Not just us. Life in general. Also, humans are not the first species to threaten life on earth. Look up the great oxygenation event. The first photosynthetic plants sucked CO² out of the ancient atmosphere and pumped toxic reactive gass(oxygen) into the atmosphere, causing a massive extinction event and for the planet to freeze over

We are however the only sentient, conscious species that can actively laugh at the facts while living in the consequences. And sadly far more of them exist and tend to control things. This is all a big IF we reach anywhere but our moon. And I'm not too optimistic in earth banding together to achieve it.

@@edthoreum7625 antinatalism is the philosophy of someone who has no long-term vision. Say being complicit in the production of new life is a moral evil. That doesn't mean "I shouldn't have kids," it's "kids shouldn't be had." But it's worst than that- not only is it the case that you'd have to convince every human to stop having kids, this moral conundrum applies all the same to every living thing! And not just living things, but anything that can receive positive and negative utility. In other words, building a programme to play a Mario game that has a reward function is morally wrong. You might as well say _entropy_ is morally wrong for all the good it does you. "Self-arranging things should be made because they inevitably experience conditions sub-optimal to self-arrangement" is the basic argument, and it's delusional.

And so many of these "human bad" people are also somehow against the idea of space colonization, like why? If they want humanity to leave earth alone so bad, humanity moving to another already lifeless planet would be a preferable option? These people won't be satisfied unless all humans start to collectively commit Seppuku Of course even that won't solve their "problem", by the outlook of things, another intelligent species will rise in a few million years and start doing what humans did again, intelligent species like human is the tendency of nature, by opposing humanity they are actually the ones opposing nature

Like- what do they think biosignatures are? Anyway, I usually don't worry too much about fighting them on their grounds- nobody wants to die off. Even if we did, probably another intelligent civilisation would arise in our place. My main issue is usually that it's a convenient argument political apathetists use. They don't want to die, but some of them like the idea of "nothing matters" giving them a free pass to not care about politics, which annoys me greatly.

Nothing to do with the five hiroshima’s of energy we pump into oceans each second, 300 per minutes, hour after day for decades. We overshoot and need several earths, just to satisfy America resources: we steal from future kids to keep the diet-coke flowing. Maybe this works better on next planet. Or next dozen? Can’t accept our way of life is vast death. Too late to set up wane-thin poverty jail-cell of a colony on Moon or Mars: we blew it. We are mere seasons away from Arctic blue ocean event, triggering famine and wars. My 21 yr old son sees my interest in space like B+W Buck Rogers serials, a fantasy for another era. He’s not alone. Yes, I know that it would take an immense amount of spaceships to drain earths atmosphere but what if it was a colony on an asteroid? Or the moon? Some restriction have to be implemented right? Like you can't just dock and fill your ship up with air and then leave. The same would go for ships entering our atmosphere, when they land how safe would it be for them to just went the ships atmosphere right out in our atmosphere? The 1 thing that is missing is the economic infrastructure to make these ideas into reality. Another nugget touched on here is that the nature of humans is such that group A would rather kill group B, than they would create an economic infrastructure of a scale such that off Earth colonies could be built and maintained. Clearly if we don't change this thought process and civilization structure, then humanity doomed and no amount of outside help will save it from this internal self destruction.

Humanity is in a temporary spot in its life cycle. We are the protectors of the Earth. We and the Earth are going though growing pains to get there. We needed to use fossil fuels as the stepping stones to get there. I would say we are about 75% of the way though this fossil fuel era. Fossil fuel use is in no way good for the environment, but I do not think it is as bad as people tend to think it is. The Earth heals extremely fast and will soon.

@@garethbaus5471 I think that was an analogy. But I do think your comment points out the hyper-techno-science-optimism that some people are having a problem with - “who cares if you lose a limb, we can just make you a new one!” Let’s jump from our natural arm, past all the inferior intermediate productions,, to Luke Skywalker's hand. And as always - who is going to have access to this new hand magic? The average person? I know, I know - over time costs will come down …. But in the meantime a lot of people are going to live their entire lives waiting for the cost to come down hoping that one day they too can maybe have a RealApendage (TM)(Patent Pending) just like the one they saw on whatever screen they will be addicted to in the future (because we really are just swapping out out tech addictions, aren’t we? TV, then computer, then phone, then goggles). I think this has the potential to be a civilization level, back to “dark ages” , war catalyst. When the disparity between the health and longevity of one group of people (and their children) and another becomes too wide. In the past the health and well being, the medical availability, between the people was not that different. Likewise, what disparity there was was not as easily visible to the masses. The big question is if the Epsilon class will realize they are Epsilons and be happy not being an Alpha or Beta or will collectively say, wtf? But I digress, it was an analogy based on the broken arm comment previously.

I watched the episode about climate change solutions recently. I think there's good potential to make offworld habitats by exporting sequestered CO2 on the moon and orbital habitats in the form of fertilizer/soil and fuel. A mass driver with rotovator would really help with this. Still, its not quite enough to sequester all the CO2 we need to stabilize the climate but it might help while at the same time empowering humanity to employ those other ideas like solar shades or collect He3 for fusion. Plus, it would do exactly what you're talking about here by giving humanity a few extra back up habitats in case resource scarcity nuclear wars threaten civilization

We really can't do that. Taking all that carbon out of the system permanently is as dangerous as having pumped it all into the atmosphere as it is. That cycle needs a particular ratio. Fucking with it is a bad idea. . That said, we could probably build a better self-regulating system than nature did, because nature is an absolutely shitty engineer. But right now, yanking all that carbon completely out of the system is an extremely poor choice. It needs to stay here, if there's any hope of fixing the climate at some point (however briefly it continues to exist anyway).

  • @danielschmidt2186

@@DoremiFasolatido1979 The problematic carbon has been locked in deposits of coal, oil, and natural gas. The higher concentrations during dino times lead to massive plant growth and no polar ice caps, as well as frequent massive devastating shifts in climate as far as we can tell. It would be nearly impossible to send the amount of CO2 needed to return to below 350 ppm CO2 into space, but a cumulative approach with other on world sequestration methods could do it. The most promising way to sequester CO2 on earth is by creating rich topsoil, which to me does beg the question, why not create soil in space for offworld colonies. We would want to do a proper accounting so as not to run into issues someday of offworlding too much, but that would probably take over a century. Biochar saturated in liquid worm casting tea is dense with microbial life and porous carbon material. This is the most effective fertilizer for amending lunar regolith possibly.

As astronomers and other scientists become more vociferous when asking the question "Where is everybody?", I think the answer is staring us all in the face. Any species that evolves to the point where it is very good at exploiting resources has not yet evolved to be very good at conserving and husbanding resources for the long term, so they eventually collapse and the civilization does not survive. They simply disperse and disappear, like some past cultures on earth that disappeared after they used up all the firewood.
