Yes the secret of braze welding is heat management. When brazing thin to thick, I heat a spot of the thick piece 1/4" away from joint until red hot. Then, while holding bronze in joint, I fan the heat towards the joint. Keeps me from burning up the thin piece everytime.

I use clean or all new material, so I need very little flux. Check out this video for the way I use flux.

Why is this considered a braze, is it because you're only liquefying the rod and not work piece.

Brazing steel to steel. The steel in this case only needs to be brought to a red hot temperature. The brazing rod is heated till it melts between the two steel rods. Here is a complete list of brazing videos. gsegmedia.com/?page_id=2877 (Scroll down to brazing)
