Before the West apologists try to make us forget, think of the days before the year 2000 when Africa was totally dependent on the West. Those days Africans had no hope. Does anybody remember The Economist arrogantly declaring Africa as a hopeless continent in the year 2000? Then God sent China. China pays for the raw materials it obtains from Africa through building infrastructure that Africans desperately need. Roads & bridges, railway lines and seaports are needed in Africa and China is helping build them. The West is trying hard to make China into a villain and some braindead Africans are falling for the propaganda.

+Kobo theres no "propaganda" stop using that word, you just have to look at facts, the chinese definately do want something in return, but they do not discriminate, they want your raw materials for a beneficial good deal. Though the investment that China does is better than foreign aid which western countries are known for. Plus the Chinese are awesome at building infrastructure. There is no conspiracy against Africa from the west, colonialism ended a long time ago

If you have time to read the history (thousands of years) of China, conquering and empire is not our style (At that time all Asian countries were small and weak). This is our culture. We were all being bullied by someone for a long time. Let's be friends, protect ourselves and improve the life quality.

European countries had colonized many Afican states for hundred of years but no development and people continues live in poverty and even face starvation. They only divide the people and provide weapons for the people to fight each other and get killed.China is entirely different. They came in with good intention to develop the countries and make it prosperous and make the people lives better with enough food and with all the basic essential things which they had not seen before during the white man rule. Now certain European countries are jealous of China popularity in Africa and trying to sabotages.I think the Afican people are not so stupid to believe these evil stories after all they can see the different with China and European countries had did to them. All African states must united with China to stay strong and ward off evil intention from foreign countries who do not want to see a develop Africa.

I personally think China involvement in Africa is a very good thing, first it would draw Africa closer to unification with the any manipulation of one country against the other, second Africa will definitely benefit from the Africa China relationship, but it also comes down to the type of deals each African countries made, and that's what I think is the the deciding factor of the whole thing.

I'm not saying this coz I'm Chinese... but at around 8:00, the woman complains that only lowly jobs go to Africans. That got me thinking.... if Africans are generally unemployed and their countries didn't really have infrastructures, then the construction of these things or large scale projects must be new to Africa. Without skills and experience, what kind of jobs do you expect African workers to get? If China had been in China for many decades and Africa is now basically developed but Africans are still only doing lowly job, then I see the point to complain about that.

Once there are more skilled workers in Africa, they will use more Africans. I believe that's already happening. And don't tell me how many specialists there are in Africa, do they have the experience? No offense, but what's the quality of education there? Brazil for example is notorious for the lack of skills of its skilled labor. The same goes with the Philippines and many developing countries.

Rei W. it's why I said "..It depends on the Country in Africa .." Nigeria for example have well Educated people and indigenous Developers . The Question is - Do You have the Money ?lol . The thing is , China does not like to just provide Capital (cash) to African Countries because that could expose them to accusation of supporting corruption ..so they would rather just provide infrastructure(Construction) in exchange for the Raw Materials they get .This also supports their own developers & Companies ...I think its a fair exchange and works well for both sides ..

Europeans took over the whole continent of Africa for 300 years and not a single infrastructure was built for the local people for all these years. No roads, no clean water, no electricity, no factories, only churches and complex rail systems built with African labour at strategic points on the continent to loot our natural resources. In a country like Guinea Conakry for instance, the French removed all telephone poles and wires during their independence just because they refused to sign into their terms. The Chinese, no matter how bad they are, can never be as cruel to Africans as the Europeans. Let's embrace the Chinese because they are the only ones that have shown interest in training Africans to be on their own. Neither the Japanese, Europeans, Indians or Americans have any interest in teaching Africans to be self reliant, only the Chinese do.

Good god, that host is so terrible. Woefully unprepared to talking about this topic. She spends like 5 min on trying to find a failed Chinese product? *facepalm*. Fact is, China is doing a lot for/with Africa that the west either can't do or won't do. Yes, it's motivated in part by greed, but it's perhaps moreso motivated by how China NEEDS resources. China is a big country and there's a massive amount of both manufacturing for other countries, as well as for itself, thus it needs resources. China itself isn't a country that is endowed with many of its own. When China goes into an African country, it usually starts by making an irresistible proposal to African leaders: - Cultural exchanges - No intervening in the local politics - Full or partial funding for a given project, such as a railway or road At the very least the last two. This is in STARK contrast to the West, which always tries to push its own IDEAS on others, such as democracy. While in theory good and nice, it's just not always suitable or done in the right way or what's needed at the time. You can talk all you want about freedom of speech for example, but that matters very little to someone who doesn't have clean drinking water. The Western financial institutions like the IMF will also make deals which don't benefit the African country in question, such as when they need money. So this means with the West, African countries can risk getting screwed over both in the short AND long-term. In this regard, China is very generous. Yes it's true there's bad stories of building projects not being completed, locals not being hired and perceived rascism. Absolutely. It's also true that black skin isn't considered a good thing in China, yes. Hence why Africans might feel they get treated badly. However China isn't used to dealing with the world in this way, so this could all change very quickly. China itself has certainly changed very quickly. It's also obvious why the Chinese aren't keen on employing locals: - They don't speak Chinese - They may not work as hard/long - They don't know Chinese culture and customs - They might have to be paid more - China has many migrant workers and they need places to go to - They're not a part of the Chinese "network" of people. 关系. - They might not be as mobile or possible to move around on or manipulate. - They probably don't have China in mind when working. The thing about China is that it's a developing country, it's non-Western and it's not democratic. This totally separates China from how the West was and is. The West essentially treated Africa like garbage in the past. Lots of colonization, exploitation and all the other crimes that follow with that. Sure, a few good cultural legacies and such perhaps, but mostly Africa has suffered a lot. China often seeks out win-win situations. However, China has ALSO suffered a lot. China was partly colonized by Western forces in its own time and it went through a period which the Chinese call "the century of humiliation" wherein they were humiliated. Because the Chinese were used to having great and powerful dynasties, but because they didn't follow what was going on, they got a rude awakening when Western forces (British, French, Assmerican etc.) forced themselves on it. China wasn't able to defend itself. So China has only recently really sprung into developing; which started in 1978. So in only 30 years China went from being extremely poor, to being the worlds number 1 economy or close to. That's extremely well done, considering it took Western countries many more decades. So Africa has a lot in common with China. BUT China also NEVER colonized African nations. They explored Africa a bit in the voyages of one of their famous naval commanders, a guy called Zheng He, but that's it. There's lots to gain here, for both sides. I'd also rather have a half-finished railway than a bombed out apartment complex.

刘易斯马文加 Generally speaking, the Chinese do not have the concept of racism, because traditionally Chinese people rarely touch other nationalities. Although there are other ethnic minorities in the hinterland of China, they have a long history (China is a centralized empire and also An independent civilization, in this way, lasted for five thousand years. In development, it basically merges or accepts each other. Moreover, China has been the most advanced civilization in the world for most of its history, so it has no interest in contacting other countries or civilizations, and it is also geographically determined that it is not easy to go out, and the only one that can be more exposed. It is a nomadic nation in the north, but they always play a role of invasion and looting, so China is traditionally closed. Of course, there are differences in aesthetics, for example, Chinese people generally don’t like the darkness of the object, because white is an aesthetic acceptable to all. If you meet Africans, then it’s just an aesthetic difference, but it’s just an aesthetic difference. In Africans' feelings it becomes discrimination and racism.

African bros let me tell you how China built such a economic powerhouse in 30 years. Chinese work hard but that's not enough, Chinese trade is built on equality and a balanced outcome for all parties. I'm not saying all Chinese are good and all Western people are bad but history has provided plenty of evidence. Since ancient time, China has build trade networks with many countries, never has China used military forced for trade gains. On the other hand, Western economic power is built on military power, even today. Chinese can truly understand the painful colonial history of Africa because China fought two Opium wars with the British. Millions of Chinese lost their lives and entire cities were razed or ceded and priceless artefacts stolen. Lets not talk about the revenge for the past but we have to make sure that history does not repeat itself.

In 2015 the annual per capital GDP of China is only 8,000 USD and the Total GDP of China is 11 trillion USD for its 1.36 billion population. So China still is a developing country. And China will maintain a 5%-7% sustainable y-o-y GDP growth rate in coming 20 years because Chinese rapidly develop better education, health care system, infrastructure, integral industry system and enjoy better innovation facilities ever before. China's rising is not a result from CCP regime or Capitalist Democracy regime, but a result from a enormous well-education and well-training population.By the end of 2014 ,130 million Chinese have the college diploma and university diploma, and 200 million Chinese have the high middle-school diploma, 520 million Chinese have the junior middle-school diploma,360 million Chinese have the 6-years elementary education diploma. Every year additionally 7 million Chinese students graduate from different colleges and universities to start working. Still China's economy will take 10-15 years to reach per capital GDP 20,000 USD which is the threshold of developed country. China will spend another 15-20 years from now to be the real No.1 economic entity and distribute the income more fairly among different people in different tiers. China make trades and investments with Africa fairly. Trades and investments always benefit each other. So if Africa want to develop fast, pls keep society stable like China, let Africa people work hard, let them well-education and well-training. if you have no well-education and well-training people, things should be quite tough.

The relationship between Africa and China should be like the previous one between China and the USSR when China was coming into it's own. That relationship kept the long arm of western imperialism at bay and allowed for China to develop without major or constant interference. When the time came that they should part, they did, without the threat of war. African nations should have the same aim and goal in mind, partnering with a strong military and economic power that will allow for the development of value for African resources for Africans, and prosperous and long term raw material resource contracts for China. The goal of all African nations should be the gradual and total reduction of raw materials exports, replaced by manufactured African products, at any cost. Our alliance with China will force the rest of the world to purchase manufactured African products made from African raw materials at current market prices. A win win situation for both parties.

I think the reason they do it is to built some allies. If they can built up the countries in Africa they will also gain loyal allies. If those African countries start to develope they can easily beat the western world when it comes to economy, trade, etc. Thats also one of the reason why the western world is not trying that hard to built up Africa.

From my view, China changing Africa for some reasons bellow: first, Africans once help China return to UN, which means Africans are great political allies to China in the world. So China should try their best to win over Africans, even without making money. Second, It's mutual benefits that China can make some money and Africans can develop their economies and improve their life standard, which also can make Chinese a good reputation. Somehow, China wants to change its image to be more positive.Third, China wants to upgrade itself manufacturing level by industrializing Africa to challenge the West. Fourth, China can build the good relationship with Africans. Friends can save and support you in case of dangers .

China's rising because their people never mind to do underpaid jobs. if Chinese entrepreneurs have to paid the same cost in Africa then why should they bothered to go harsh remote land over there? if the western entrepreneurs wished to pay higher wedge in west rather low cost in China. China will never rise! lazy people always blame others. if you doing dirty job today and use your hard earned cash wisely to build up your own industrial capacity, one day you probably become next emerge economy soon! if you don't have money to invest you have to provide either cheap labour or natural resource to attract investment. nothing is free and no one owe you nothing!

china mean well for Africa. not only are they giving the governments loans. but they are helping with the instructors too. as far as hiring the dinginess people to work in their factories. that need to be address. it could be because of language Beria. but i think we need to find solution to that. most Chinese are well educated and smart. so am sure they will find a solution to the matter. it is give and take in this partnerships. and i believe that it will be a win win for both party. i mean china and African. the government also need to provide more security more police to tackle any terrorist that wan,ts to disestablish our movement towards development. it is about time we turn African continents into an industrialized nation. this way we can start manufacturing our own products and equipment. with the help of the investors . i believe we can do it. god bless Africa and all that mean well for African continent.

Whether Africa falls into China's debt or not, Africa is receiving other types of benefits that improves the quality of life for its people that has been living with slight progress in this modern world.

China is a door opener for Africa. After Africans are trained, roads and ports are build, the rest should be up to Africans to do better and excel in future. China can provide low interest loans, skill training, knowledge exchange etc. basically teaching and helping Africans to be more self sufficient, self reliant. This benefits China as a well as Africa nations.

When China open up , All these foreign investment. companies, especially manufacturing also pay local workers very low wages for maximum profit. where were all these suspicions and suggestions about higher wages and more employment with better prospect? As a self employed small business person. it's a given, you work low wages, work hard, learn the skills , save money, then set out to have your own business better yet if the African government would help these local new entrepreneurs. Chines workers usually sacrifice for a generation or two to reach these levels It's all hard work and sacrifices. not entitled. Entitlement is such a western mentality and culture.

Africa need the rise on its own resources!!! Africa can literally be a independent profitable united country of its own. Africa is the motherland and the last natural place on earth, with nature, wildlife, and ancient history, Africa needs to build there own self made businesses which will completely cut out the middle man, and has the potential of being the next big super power all on its own. Africans are strongly dedicated to education so why are they not increasing in there own businesses, if China or any other country wishes to trade with Africa than perfect, but these companies need to be purely owned by "Africa". Really look into China's government and you will see major concerns! abandoned cities to population control, low income jobs, the list goes on. How it seems is they are so desperate for help they don't really see the quiet before the storm. Say what you want about America but as we know America is in increasing debt to China, and you see all the corruption there, i fear there is anterior motives that though short term it may seem reasonable, long term it may put Africa in a bad situation and also wind up being in debt.

talk2me9ja You really dont know much about the Chinese government or how they operate. Africa is pretty much being robbed and colonized, the silent take over. Its not about America vs China its about people like myself who knows what's really going on and voicing ourselves for the protection of the last natural and most important place left here on this planet. One thing that we all know is how much dept America is in due to China, now knowing there pushing for a New World Order, and all of a sudden after years China has been in Africa now there finally building stuff that could have been done with?... Africa needs to do this on its own without other countries. Cut out the muddle man and do it on its own. Learn how to build roads and all Africa needs, its not that hard of a thing to do especially now we have Google and KZread and everything, Africans can teach each other what to do and how to do it for themselves rather than volunteering as slaves giving all there hard work resources making other people rich while they stay poor. What goes on in Africa can literally effect the entire world and its the most important place which is why other countries need to keep there greedy hands out of it and "Africans" profit the rite way. African people are not helpless not by a long shot, there some of if not thee most hard working people which is why so many were stolen into slavery that once had the most beautiful constructions, monuments, and cuties around tge world, Egypt being one of them. Your looking at tge gilts and glam, but your not looking at the consequences long term. We're looking at it long term, mind you China is overpopulated they can only have 1 child per family, and there government treats Africans just how they treat there own African workers. And even now bringing cheap quality and priced Chinese made stuff that's taking jobs from the African people, before you know it China will own Africa and that's why people are against it. Africa needs to have there own, not depend on other's to fix therev problems, fix it themselves. Look at it from a logical point of view, China in Africa like this is a bad thing.

Around 33.10, the Chinese activities are much more efficient than the west, nothing to do with shady road. Physical structure got certain standard to comply. Chinese company can be more efficient because they are business oriented, while the west has got more other things involved. Remember both come mostly with loan and financing, the Chinese are much straight forward - business, with good returns, the west are much more to business, good returns plus control. I suspect, the Chinese are more humanitarian, while the West are more politically motivated. Why, because more African states prefer China. Corruption?? Both cases can happen. Corruption is human factor. Unless either one side is not human.

It should be noted that there is no shortcut to development, starting from the manufacturing of simple products that more developed countries cannot produce cheaply and then moving up the ladder to more and more complicated products of higher value. China took 30 years to develop what it is today and having to invest a lot into education and training. And that is faster than what any other country could do for such a large and diverse population. African nations should take this as a model of development but their governments must have plans for growth appropriate for their state of development. These plans must be realistic to the markets that you sell to. The cost of your product is what will determine whether that product will sell in your selected market. How much a worker should be paid is what your government can set in its employment laws. But since the cost of a product includes the cost of labour, there is a limit how far the cost of labour can rise.

At this moment, Africa countries should develop its infrastructure and train its labor as fast as they can.

China is not just a prominent player in the construction scene in Africa. I also witnessed a lot of Chinese involvement in infrastructure projects on remote island countries in the South Pacific. Everybody needs infrastructure to sustain and/or grow. In purest economic terms, projects are usually rewarded to the lowest bidder who could also help in the financing process. China generally appears to have that competitive edge. When doors to the Chinese market were first opened to the developed countries in the early 1980's, Chinese human resources were exploited but the Chinese soon learned the western know-how. Foreign investors were then "eliminated" from the country with a couple of decades. Africans could definitely imitate the Chinese experience in building their economy. Thank you for a wonderful discussion on the subject.
