David what a great job you did on this interview , I was working at Zuma Jays in Malibu in 82 .Cheyne came into the shop with his Laser Zap .At that time boards had the mid point above center .I had gone through factory training to take the orders behind the counter .I was telling all the customers to move the midpoint 2" behind center where we stand .We sold hundreds of them and the modern outline we surf today was born . Cheyne is the godfather of modern surfing . Lastly I purchased a star fin and made a board .The thing flys and does not lose speed in turns .Im living proof and testament to his knowledge and brilliance .I could go on for hours .

I was, who is this guy!! World champ. I've never heard of him. Coming from a surf, bodyboard, longboard etc kind of background. But yeah, even watching him surf I think I didn't like but will definitely have to go back and check it out. Seen his face, probably said gday a bunch but dam, so interesting. Love the description of bringing the surfboard shape around to where you stand. His skateboard turn and operate from the one spot reference. AND his statements on seemingly irrelevant other stuff than the actual surf performance when judging, HMMM. YEA bland more characters are needed Bobby Martinez. AND love how CH remembers every Judge, competitor and events. AND his singular approach to surfing SEE he doesn't need others verifying what he knows is obvious. YEA CH at RJs.

Derek Hynd on a podcast tells the story of when Cheyne got rip off after he left Bronzed Aussies he was surfing in a heat at Haleiwa and as he was paddling into a wave at the end of the heat to win they sounded the horn early and the wave didn’t score… 2nd to MR. Cheyne’s brashness and popularity must of rubbed the old school the wrong way… So many dodgy scoring decisions in 2024 with video reply… can’t imagine 1980. CH remembers so much because he needed to process it all. Understand the impact of others on his successes and how to move forward positively. Great conversation. The titles should be investigated for righting wrongs of the past. That Lightning Bolt story is so bad. The thing with todays judging is hard for the average punter to understand. How do you become a judge? What quals are needed? Are they rotated? What is the training? Who are they? Id like to see an insight film into that side of surfing. For me it would be more motivating to watch the competitions. Nice work DLS

Of course experimental and a big chance to take in a top competition but your statement to start the podcast doesn’t account for the growth the sport was still going thru at that time and the room for improvement available. You could say the same thing for Simon A and twins and anyone the first contest the showed up for, but this fin and design did not stand the test of time, thus rendering you comment less valid, not invalid but not nearly as revolutionary as you’re making it seem. The fin was basically never seen again. But hey, click bait. 😉

Your retort is filled with contention and sarcasm but so does mine, which would make me a hypocrite to not accept or invite an equal amount of conversational criticism. So first acknowledgement of your questions, no, never claimed to be, so I ask back, can’t people just be well researched and have opinions even if not self educated? There is a thing called the internet these days. Clearly my few comments lately have you provoked enough to engage yah? 😉 However you did not respond with any historical contradictions to my points, thus offering a counter conclusion or proving me wrong. Why not address my specific exact point that the same could be said for all the new designsx, thrusters from Simon, twins and other experiments along those same small timeline of years. That was a time period of advancement and experimentation. So any narrative like your comment could’ve been said about each invention at thier time of introduction to the sport. Who hurt me, am I an incel or some kook, - your surf whisperer comment is very unoriginal and not intelligently contributing to the conversation at all. Couldn’t the same be questioned of your statement about it of the wing fin? Bring me on a podcast or create a throw away email and link in your bio and we can have a know it all debate and talk it out 😉
