    Paige's "it's alright to hate her" has stuck with me for years. I recently lost a close friend and there were some issues around it. Needless to say, saying how much I hated him for leaving me helped me and I was able to forgive myself for being unable to help him.

    Im so sorry for your loss, its similar with me, when my mom died i hated her at a point for leaving me, even though it wasn't her fault or choice, but that whole scene at the mausoleum really reflected how i felt. One of paiges other quotes stuck with me "itll never be okay that she's gone, but i promise it will get better" basically stating the hole will never go away, but it will get easier to cope which is true for the most part at least to me it is anyway lol

    I always loved how emotions were shown in Charmed. It really brought a sense of realism to an otherwise fantastical show. Particularly how Paige felt reluctant to call grams "grams" because she had a grandmother of her own growing up. And how Piper and Phoebe sort of took turns breaking down about Prue's death, I remember my mom and auntie's being the same way after my nan died.

    I don't know if I agree that Piper's exploding power is triggered by fear. The first time she uses it is because she is angry at Leo having to leave - no fear there. In "once in a blue moon" her exploding power also manifests out of anger, not fear. I think the confusion between freezing and exploding symbolizes the ambiguity of fear and anger, defense of offense. In "look who is barking" she says Prue and Phoebe are the super witches, and she just goes along and freeze everything, and now she can't even do that. This new power comes in a time in the show when Piper needs to let go of her secondary position in the backstage, helping things happen, to actually become the oldest sister and sort of the leader and matriarch. She needs to master both fear and anger to step forward to that position. Compare her in the first season, as someone naive, romantic and idealistic, to her actions at the end of season 8, when she is detemrined to go up against Billie and Christie because this is what is supposed to happen. Well, those are just my 2 cents to the conversation. I think your charmed videos are incredible! Thank you so much for producing this kind of content!

    Freezing that's fear. That's how it initially happened and was working. Exploding that's anger. That's also how it started and the nature of such ability represents rather this emotion than fear.

    I was about to agree with you but then I kept reading your reply and you mentioned anger and fear, which made me agree with Bob. Here's the thing, fear generates two reaponses from people (three, but I'll get into that later): fight or flight. Piper's freezing power is a flight response, freeze the enemy so you can get away. Piper's exploding power is her fight response. And while yes, when she first uses the power, she's mad at Leo for leaving, unless I'm not remembering correctly, the root of her anger I think has more to do with her persistent fear of not being able to have a "normal" life (I think she's trying to get him a birth certificate or something), rather than just anger. And if you think about other instances where her exploding power is wonky, in the following episodes she's afraid of hurting her sisters or people and that makes the power get even more out of control. In Look Who's Barking, she blows up the sewing machine after Prue is turned into a dog and Phoebe into a banshee and she's having to act alone for the first time (and is afraid too). Even in the Furies episode, her anger at Prue stems from her fear of being left unprotected by her big sister and having to put on the big sister pants. One of her earlier great feats with her exploding power is in the ep. with the kid who's a Firestarter and she blows up the gate despite a power of three spell failing to do so. And though they say "maternal instinct", what moves a mother to protect a child other than fear? The fear of your child being hurt is greater than your fear for your own survival and you respond, right? Or that's the theory. I know in the Power of the Three Blondes, they get Mitzy to blow things up when she gets angry, but Phoebe says "our powers don't work well when we're angry", so I think any emotion that's out of control in general will affect their powers, but that's not the same as the actual emotion that triggers each of the sisters' powers. This makes me think of Piper as being essentially the "Fear Master" (meaning it's the emotion she's most prone to feeling and fights to control the most): She is the only sister to defeat Barbas in her first encounter with him. Prue and Phoebe both lose their first encounters in the season one ep, and Paige is manipulated by him in season 5. And yet, when he preys on Piper over her baby, she's able to overcome her fear on her own. Heck, he even played Leo like a harp when he gets him to kill an Elder. Piper, however, is used to dealing with fear and defeats him easily. Phoebe, on the other hand, isn't, as out of the four sisters, she tends to be the most reckless (fearless) and, as a result, she usually fares worst against Barbas (he got her to kill her own sister). Now, for that third response to fear I mentioned earlier that rarely get any mentions: freezing (not your attacker but you) a.k.a. being paralized by your fear. Piper goes through this in the mermaid episode, and it's particularly telling that she resorts to magic to get rid of her fear because it's the first time she loses a battle with fear and is unable to control it or react properly to it. Also, I feel like Piper manifests anger in a way that's different to how most of us tend to associate anger/angry outbursts. Think of Prue's and Phoebe's more stereotypical displays of anger (Freebie, talking about Victor to Prue, etc) vs. Piper's real moments of actual anger like when Leo leaves, or when she gets her emotions back and becomes a Valkrye, or when Phoebe becomes the Queen of the Underworld or when the Elders take Leo away in season 3, or after Billie's betrayal. We tend to associate anger with more bombastic or fiery images and symbols, but anger can also be displayed cool, calm and collectedly, which is chilling and even more disturbing. Piper's anger is generally displayed like this. And notice how in all the examples above, she never blows up anything. In short, I think Piper would be more prone to blowing up the Manor out of fear than out of anger. That's my take on it anyway. 😂

    I have stated before on the channel that the first season I ever watched of Charmed was season 8. And because of that I have always viewed the episode Paige gets her healing powers as a favorite. And even when going back and watching her entire arch it made sense she didn't have them for so long. Paige's arch is very much about embracing both her witch and whitelighter sides. The witch side comes naturally but she fights the whitelighter side. It isn't until she finds Henry and fully embraces her duty as a whitelighter that she can fully be a whitelighter. Although I do always wonder if the only reason she ever got them was because Leo was gone and they needed someone who could heal.

    @briannarobinson86484 ай бұрын

    I just wanna add this comment in case u see it. But I think Phoebe's hate and actions towards Cole make a lot of sense when you look at their relationship from the perspective of domestic abuse. In S4, Cole/the source makes it a point to isolate Phoebe from her family (a very common manipulation tactic), he continuously gaslit Paige about her suspicions towards him, and that scene where Phoebe locks herself in the bathroom with Cole trying to get in is honestly terrifying to me. It just makes sense how hostile she was in S5 (where he was still always violating her boundaries). But Charmed even showed how complicated this all is by showing how Phoebe still loved him (which is often the case as victims mourn their relationships)

  • @BetterWithBob

    @BetterWithBob

    4 ай бұрын

    And a lot of Phoebe's behaviour is quite abusive as well, which is unfortunately true to life. Hurt people hurt people, and many abuse victims go on to become abusers themselves sadly. She projects onto Cole because he has the face of the person who abused her, and then the whole "you're evil and always will be" is a tactic called baiting as well as gaslighting, where the abuser will try to get the victim to do something so they can be vilified

    I relaye mostly to Prue because I, too, was thrust into the patental role at age 9. Except, I was reslonsible for my siblings but couldnt discipline them; however, because I didnt have the authority to punish, it meant I was on the receiving end of punishment if they did something wrong. My patents berated me with "Why did you let your siblings do that?!" "how dare you tell your siblings what they can or cant do?! Youre not the parent!" and "if your sister (me) ever lays a hand on you, you have our (parents) permission to hit her" followed by "your siblings set the couch on fire and you didnt stop them?!" and a belt whipping. I carried those scars and trauma for decades and it came out in the forms of anger and temper. Unlike Prue, I dont care for my siblings; I'm not close to any family members. I'm estranged from my children, and, after I lost the one man I ever truly loved, I took a vow of celibacy and abstinence over 20 years ago. I'm content being by myself. Weirdly, I've been called a "people person" and a "truly compassionate person with a good heart". I guess when you learn to fake it, it's difficult to turn off.

    I like what you said about anger. I'm someone who practically never get upset or show anything more than annoyance. So people always say I'm "overreacting" when I'm really not. I'm just very angry. For once. Or very upset. Why must people always tell others that's it's not okay to at all express anger? I myself is guilty of that, but that's just because my husband express his anger (non-violent) a lot louder than I do. Neither way is wrong. Just because I am more quiet about what angers me, people think I am a much calmer person than I really am. People could see each one of us being angry and say that my husband must be violent, because he is so loud when he expresses his anger, but it was me - the quiet one - who was the one who grew up literally fighting with others. Don't people always say that? Fear the quiet ones. At least when someone is loud in their anger, you certainly know that they are angry.

I often thought the show was making a point about not over-indulging in your emotions (like when they turn into banshees/werwolves/furies or wreck something with their power due to grief etc. But your interpretation that it is not about overcoming bad/big emotions, but about expressing them in a healthy way and dealing with them is much more enjoyable. Will have to remember that when I re-watch some of the episodes :)

Fear and uncertainty just made her powers whacky until she could control them. And while we could interpret fear as the trigger for Paige's orbing, I think it's more likely preservation. She could, theoretically, always orb, even before she was Charmed (as that's how she survived the crash that killed her parents) and I have to assume she was afraid more than once in that timeframe. However, only in life or death situations would her power trigger. Yes, Cole scared it out of her once, but remember, she didn't trust him as a demon yet, so you could still argue it was a sense of preservation. And that expands from self-preservation to preserving Good, which falls in nicely with the Whitelighter ethos. Thoughts?

    Bob I love you and your videos so so so much! This was an excellent topic discussing the portrayal of emotions. You covered so much but there are still more things to cover and I feel you should do a part 2! Perhaps you can speak more on Leo, particularly the episode Blinded by the Whitelighter. We get to meet another Whitelighter Natalie and we finally see how working with the girls and falling in love with Piper has affected Leo all these years and why his character seems to be more of a doorknob prior to season 6. (Lol I’m using your words from a previous video, not mine.) I love Leo’s character but him allowing the girls to call the shots as well as his romance with Piper all contribute to him being a weaker Whitelighter than intended, or does it? Natalie points this out and we even see when he wants to rush off and save that witch not realizing its a trap. Also him feeling the witches pain and it damn near paralyzing him while Natalie acts like she doesn’t even feel it because she refuses to let herself be ruled by it. The show wants us to believe Natalie is the better Whitelighter because she refuses to have emotional ties with her charges, howeverrrr, Natalie dies in that episode and not only does Leo live he is eventually promoted to Elder status because of his emotional ties with the sisters. Its too late for me to analyze further but thats why we have you lol! You could also talk about Phoebe getting the power of empathy and the showrunners trying to force a redemption arc out of that but in the end it doesn’t do a damn thing because she ends up losing her powers and becomes a worse human/witch because of it. And also how her having the power of empathy allows her to tap into other people’s powers which is wrong that is a telepathy thing not empathy lol which can lead into a discussion of whether powers come from your emotions or are tied to your emotions because there is a difference and Charmed likes to bounce between these two notions lol My stance is powers are simply tied to their emotions they don’t just manifest because of a particular emotion the power is always inside of you it’s just a matter of what the trigger is thats the tricky part. They used the powers come from your emotions to give Phoebe a more active power but that is incorrect lol. There is even more emotions to explore, but for now, I’m done. 😅

    When I was young I could relate to all of the 4 sisters because I felt angry towards my father just like Prue, I also related to Phoebe cause I’m the youngest and I also related to piper cause I would be frozen by fear many times, they all helped me deal with my emotions in some ways. I also felt like Paige in the fact that I needed to affirm myself and my identity.

    Charmed was a safe space for that part of me that identified more with the powerful female. I was do drawn to the storylines, even when it saw its decline in the latter seasons. I appreciate the breakdown of the episodes because it was so much more than a show about witches or female identity. It touched on a lot of topics that helped make more sense of a ‘non-magical’ world. Good job:)

    One of the best shows ever and is still, one of my greatest comfort shows, besides Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I’m on season 2 of both, Buffy & Charmed on my rewatch. Thank you Bob for this video breakdown though I would’ve liked to hear more about, how Phoebe’s premonition powers/abilities along with, levitation, & empathy are also tied to her emotions. Along with individual struggles within her character also, like in one of my personal favorite episodes; The Eyes Have It, emotions are very important especially as someone who is grieving my beloved adopted mom.🌺❤️‍🩹🌺

    I had a difficult childhood/adolescence when it came to emotions; it was extremely unhealthy. I couldn't show happiness because if I seemed to enjoy something too much, be it a favorite toy or book or tv show, that thing would inevitably be taken away. I wouldn't be allowed to watch tv at the time my show was on all of a sudden or that show would be declared inappropriate, my favorite toy would suddenly be "missing" and never seen again, etc... BUT because I am on the autism spectrum and don't show a whole lot of emotion on my face if i wasn't outrageously visibly happy when the powers that be WANTED me to look happy i was branded a bad child or a spoiled bitch. I couldn't be angry either because i saw my grandfather beat and kick the crap out of an animal screaming in anger and that became an emotion i felt constantly but was terrified to express because i didn't want to hurt people the way i saw the goat get hurt. I still remember hearing that goat bleating and crying to this day. When I TRIED to express anger in a healthy way as an older teen my stepmom always used it against me. She'd trick me into screaming and crying by saying things about my actual birth mother timing it so when my dad walked in the room i was pitching a fit. It has taken years for me to learn how to control my emotions without being completely closed off from them and its still something i struggle with. This video on how Charmed handles emotions honestly makes me want to sit down and give the whole show a try. It seems right up my alley.

    If you notice, up until about Season 8, Paige tended to favour going solo and taking things into her own hands, so she was still somewhat disconnected from the family even though she did love them. It's during that season that she finally learns how to do it. She's also 28-29 by that season and that's actually when the brain reaches full maturity so...

    Love the video and your explanation of each sister and how emotions are a big part of every day life especially if you got powers lol .... I would love your opinion/review on two particular charmed episodes ... One being sympathy for the demon ... As a fellow Paige fan I truly could never totally forgive Phoebe for almost killing Paige and I would love your intake on that aswell .... And the second episode being power of three blondes .... I know you said you hated season 6 but I think it's one of the few good episodes to come from season 6 .... Good storyline , funny and a big guest appearance from Jenny McCarthy ...

    I find Sympathy For The Demon very hard to watch because it feels so cruel and mean spirited. Phoebe is so cruel to Paige and Cole in particular, even with Barbas whispering in her ear Power of Three Blondes is fun. It's also quite interesting to see the power stealing spell resurface and how Paige was able to keep hers since the Stillmans didn't account for her whitelighter half. And with Melody Perkins in there we have a Power Rangers connection too

    I wish I could just express my emotions in a healthy way and be happy but it's way trickier in my case. My hypersensitivity doesn't always let me control what I feel and how much I feel it. Plus it gives me some kind of empathy (I don't kid when I say Phoebe's powers are like home). I am able to channel what others are feeling even if I don't want to; mostly anger. Usually, I can manage the emotions of other people but sometimes, I just can't and it's literally painful; I was once struck by someone else's anger as soon as I entered the room that person was in and I felt like I was hit in the ribs by a baseball bat for a few hours.

    Too bad Alyssa wasn’t like “Phoebe.” Rose called out Milano for being difficult to work with on charmed she said Milano of throwing a fit in front of the crew and yelling that she doesn't get paid enough she added I cried every time we got renewed because you made that set toxic af you bleeping fraud star Alyssa treated Rose like shit behind the scenes!! Holly Marie Combs said that Shannen was fire despite from the show saying she quit after its third season in 2001. Holly recalled a conversation she had with Charmed producer Jonathan Levin, who told her that Milano threatened to sue if Doherty wasn't fired from the show. He said, you know, We're basically in a position where it's Shannen or me ( Holly) and if you don’t fire Shannen I will sue. Shannen said she cried every night she went home in season 2. At the time this was going on Alyssa and Brian (Leo) were dating. Holly said about 20 years later Brian told Holly he was sorry for everything that happened.Brian said it was wrong and he apologized again Shannen wanted to be honest and tell her story about the situation because the rumors that has followed me regardless, she said My representatives, I remember them looking at me at the time and said, "No, no, no, your career won't survive another firing, so we're just going to say that you chose to leave."I remember I started laughing, going, "Who is going to believe that I'm crazy enough to leave a hit show Milano said I'm very laid-back and passive. I have my Buddha. I come in here and meditate. Alyssa writes a book called: Sorry Not Sorry. Almost everyone knows you're not sorry for what you did to Shannen and Rose in Charmed. Well, like my parents used to tell me "its not everybody else it's you!"So when Shannon, Holly and Rose have all come out and said Alyssa a B...l'm going to say that girl is probably a B. It appears the real Book of Shadows has finally been unveiled.

    I got a start when rewatching Spartacus: Blood & Sand recently and saw how many emotional scenes the men got, and the actors were really going for it in the crying scenes. It was something I really appreciated Reminds me of a story from Russell Crowe when he was filming the scene in Gladiator of Maximus finding his wife and son dead. The script called for a stoic couple of tears down the cheek, but he felt that a man who came home to find *that* would be weeping "a full blown snotfest"
