How caring letters prevent suicide

Kevin Hines is a walking miracle, having jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge and survived. But what might have kept him from jumping at all could have been something as simple as getting a letter in the mail. One psychiatrist's long-forgotten idea about giving support to those hospitalized or treated for depression or attempting suicide is being revived, and is finding positive results in an era of texting. Lee Cowan reports. [If you are in crisis, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741.]

This is sooooo amazing. I have a program where I ship small packages with art supplies to chronically ill people and the feeling of receiving something in the mail is exactly that. That someone cares. Isolation is soooo deeply sad.

Loneliness is killing us! This program was aired 2 years ago and now here we are post pandemic where loneliness is so much more prevalent. The suicide rate among teenagers has gone up exponentially. I once came very close to checking out. I would love to be writing some of those letters because depression is all encompassing. Mentally, emotionally, spiritually, so much more than chemical imbalances in your brain

Thank you for posting this.I hope it is used, shared and becomes a standard for hospitals, centers, out patient clinics, therapists, psychiatrists, VA veteran services, youth programs and non profits. It appears to be evidence based. So many have no family, don't hear positive things and do not belong to a peer support group. They isolate and ruminate and live with pain. So glad to hear of this today. So grateful this man cared enough to research it. Amazing

This isn't just about someone in mental health crisis. Caring and respect cures more than penicillin ever has but sadly many practitioners seem to think they are either too important, too busy to lower themselves to caring for mere patients...

It's so sad when my daughters ask me how I'm doing and I said I'm feeling sad or depressed. They automatically change the subject, but if I say my back hurts all of the sudden they are preoccupied and tell me is there anything I can do? Or mom, please go to the Drs. I have cried and cried because of their lack of empathy for my mental condition.

A kind letter is nice and all, however, there are not enough doctors and mental health facilities to help 1.5 million people over a one year period. The US, once again, has ignored the desperate need for everyone to have access to quality health care. Just think about how productive our country would be if these people were cares for properly. They would have the chance to be better parents, employees, and community members.

I remember reading about Kevin Hines experience in the newspaper. His words about what he went through are amazing. I couldn't forget it and have shared them with many people over the years. I reach out to people too and it means so much. Do it! A quote I repeat is " suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem " think about it. Solve the problem another way. Take care of yourself!

I watched this last, of all the videos from this weekend, because I knew it would weigh heavily on my heart. Just seeing him with those red rimmed eyes just makes me realize he's not quite over the self-pity. I wonder what he would have considered as an "ounce of care" from perfect strangers passing him by on the bridge.

He had and still has a severe mental disease-bipolar with psychotic features, including auditory hallucinations. If you watch one or 2 of his videos where he tells his story, I think you’ll find that he doesn’t have any self pity. He doesn’t blame anyone else for what he did-he’s saying that if you see someone who you think looks like they’re struggling, ask them if they’re ok-bc it can save someone’s life.

Further. Reaching affordable care is not easy for people financially burdened. Thus this horrible reality of homeless and self medicating on illicit drug use. People are on islands with no life raft. Judged, criminalized and dismissed. This is the condition that will expedite the end to human existence.

Seriously - I'm a living witness that when others DO NOT CARE for me somehow/someway it makes me not care for myself. It is a true fight on my part to hold on. The "ONLY" reason I continue to hold on is because I stay in the Word. I Know my Redeemer lives and that He loves me unconditionally. God truly IS GOOD.... ALL THE TIME.

Really? What about an entire family saying they care? We're here. We want to help. It the illness. Take the help to understand the illness and how to manage it. We see your pain. We don't want you isolated or running with people who are condoning your negative thoughts. Your sons need you and love you. For 10 years this was said over and over again. Did not stop my son from putting a belt around his neck.

Fourthgirl Yeah it reminds me of what a family friend said to us when seeing my sister at the end stage of her 10 years of drug and alcohol abuse - “Isn’t there anything you can do to help?” Like we had just been hanging around not even noticing how sick she was - it still really really pisses me off. The guilt a family feels when they die is bad enough without all the useless pontifications.
