I live in the Channel Islands on an Island called Jersey and our main export is Jersey Dairy so we have possibly more cows than islanders (well, not far off) so it's peculiar to me to read comments and hear you speak of a fear of cows!! Our Jersey cows are so approachable and sweet, probably due to life long exposure to people

You had me cracking up Julie, you know the cows smell your fear and use it to their advantage lol. You just need to bottle feed a calf to overcome lol. Now chicken and rosters they are the monsters, as kids we stuffed our pockets with grain. If you throw grain they stop and eat and we could run to the next tree. Where are the kid, oh their fine the chickens have them treed in the side yard we’ll get them at dinner 😆.

You can do this! I was raised on a dairy farm and worked with animals daily. Most all of ours had been dehorned though, because they tend to fight one another. Now you can learn where the term " grab them by the horns" comes from.

If you are afraid of cattle, then this is the best breed to help you overcome that fear. They look terrifying with those huge horns but are really the most affectionate, docile cattle ever. (I've kept them for 20 years) They have been living in close confines with humans since the days of Stonehenge, so pretty sure all the nasty genes have been culled out (mostly). Good luck with these amazing creatures and thanks for bringing White Park cattle to a whole new audience. They deserve our admiration and respect.

Julie I understand how you feel completely! Do not be ashamed of your fear of cows. I have an irrational fear of chickens, an extreme fear! I don't know anyone else with this fear, but I'm sure they are out there. However, I do love fresh chicken eggs. Unless someone else gets them for me, I will not be eating fresh eggs. So far my fear will not let me get close enough to the chickens to get to the nest to get the eggs. A huge round of applause and a giant bravo for being brave enough to face your fear! The good thing is we can laugh at ourselves, along with the other people laughing at us.🤣 We can all use more laughter in our life. It helps calm the fears. Mapperton is so beautiful. I love keeping up with all these new exciting projects!

LOVE this! And I don't mean to laugh at your pain, but you're VERY entertaining! On a more helpful note, perhaps watch some Temple Grandin footage with cows? It might make them less scary. She LOVES cows and it's really sweet to see her interaction with them. Altho--they don't have horns, so that's another aspect of the fear, I would imagine.

Cow horns are like antennas...each one needs a certain space so they can run as a herd. Yes they are weapons, like cats' have claws, but they aren't really out to get you. They will give two warnings if they want you to leave and you just walk away... usually they are interested to meet you and they don't see you as a threat if you move slowly and calmly.

Oh Julie. So glad you made it through the herding. Animals sense your fear and that makes it very hard for all involved. From what I saw, Tom uses the low stress animal handling method to move cattle. I suggest getting a cattle herding dog. Just think of the pod cast episodes. Herding demonstrations, best breeds, idiosyncrasies such as the dogs will herd kids, kittens, poultry just for fun.

Aw, Julie what a shame - I love cattle, BUT - two words together made me scared for you: WILD & HORNS!!!!!!! Perhaps Tom can introduce you to some properly docile hornless cows to help build confidence - when I was a kid, in lieu of a horse, I had a pet cow, we'd sit under the apple trees together - an angel among bovines... Stay safe - do hope your visitors are returning now. Stay safe. Those are beautiful cattle.

Great watching, great to show that you are not experts with cattle. I have to say a little dangerous especially when getting close to cows and calves, they are only protecting their young, much more dangerous and unpredictable than bulls. We always carry a stick just incase and we have very tame cattle. My great grandfather was killed by a bull, it is very worth learning more about animal husbandry relating to cattle to ensure accidents do not happen! Cattle are very bright as soon as you show a weakness in terms of trying to drive them out of a shed they know you are the less dominate force and then it becomes dangerous.

These are gorgeous gentle giants...and shining their 'white light'...stand in your knowing that they ARE this...use your yoga and go to a centered place of 'calm'...then bring in the joy of just being in their presence into your sphere...remember that in India, the cow is a most sacred animal and wanders the streets freely not harming any one. I just wouldn't ever wear 'red' around them (hehehehe!)...only joking...apparently, the color 'red' doesn't actually arouse anything in them! Just be centered, connected to Mother Earth...NO FEAR...and in stay in your knowing that these precious beings are your friends...💗💗💗

Big step in DIY CBT! If you keep at it regularly, your fear will subside, or get yourself a CBT -therapist and you’ll be over it in 12 sessions! Best method out there for phobias like this. Lovely cattle, and souch a wonderful landscaoe for them to roam. That’s how cattle should be kept, (and I know several who do!) living their natural wonderful lives free roaming in pasture, woodland and bathing in te lake. They really are such peacful sensitive creatures. Please relieve the bull of that horrid ring! Illegal where I live, inhumane, they have the most sensitive muzzles and he should be free to nuzzle his herd without that metal ring in the way of their intimate interactions. Please do it, his days of slavery are over. 🙏❤️

Our fears don't need to be considered rational by others, to be crippling to us. I have a fear of swimming in very deep water (for instance, you would NEVER EVER EVER find me swimming beside a boat in the deep blue in the middle of the ocean). Am I ever going to be confronted with that? Probably not. Does it still horrify me? *You bet it does!!*

When I was a kid, in order for us to get to the swimming hole at my great grandma’s house, we had to cross a field with a bull. We’d spot him and work our way about half way across the field and he’d spot us every time. He come charging for us. My grandma would start banging on a pan as soon as she’d see us start to run, to distract him. Fun times, but I’m not a fan of bovines.

An irrational fear of cattle/cows is called bovinophobia. I don't suffer from it but nonetheless whenever I crossed a field were cows were grazing, I made sure to keep a safe distance between them and me!! You never know. I read a comment where the person wrote that they were terrified of chickens, there is a word for that too, a bit complicated, and that's alektorophobia, from ancient Greek aléktōr which means rooster.

We had a beef cow we named Zipper, it seemed to me she’d jump our 5 foot gate on a Sunday morning as we were going to church, almost EVERY Sunday. There’d our heifer be, wandering down the gravel road as if taking her Sunday stroll. We were glad when she became a freezer heifer. 😊 Julie, you are so fun. Cows are okay, big gentle things 90% of the time. You encounter them on country walks if the path takes you through their field, just keep an eye out before you go in for a bull or any calves, and make sure your dog is on its lead if you have a dog with you. Safe distance etc if in a field with them. I forget some people from towns & cities don’t encounter them ever.

My mother would do something rude to my uncle when they were kids. She knew he was terrified of chickens, so in order to protect herself from retaliation, she would simply carry a hen around all day. Carrying a chicken around for hours seems worse than getting punched in the arm, but I guess she thought it was worth it.

I have a memory of my Nanna leading a bull across the yard while I hid behind the wheel of a tractor 🙈

I don't think fear of cows is at all irrational. I think fear of a lot of things is essential to our survival. Those are lovely cows, those White Park,I see them on TV on Countryfile but I wouldn't go near them. My personal theory is that modern black and white dairy cows are now VERY dangerous because they are so highly bred, they are very nervous. I nearly got trampled on by a herd of cows 30 years ago when I blithely walked through their field thinking cows were placid like in the old days. I was saved by a gang of older Boy Scouts turning up who distracted the cows. Since then I will never walk near cows. Having said that I once had to walk through a New Forest Vale full of big shaggy Highland cattle with horns and it was fine, they really were placid and ignored me.
