So far I've used it to limit the language in some way. First I just tried asking it to write texts about the country of the language, but using only the 500 most commonly used words in that language. This worked pretty well. I imported them into LingQ as well, so that I could generate audio and also get, create definitions, etc., but mostly I read and listen to them again and again. I got it to use the country itself as the theme at first (history, description of the capital, its cuisine, its natural geography, the history of its main river, how its politics works at the national level, how its politics work at a regional level, what the natives say about themselves and their country, what can be said to distinguish its culture, the history of its relations with its neighbours), but then got it to write about more specific things when they appeared and I was interested (I got a bunch about philosophy and philosophers in the country, then a bunch specifically about existential philosophers). It's worked pretty well. It's given me a rapid boost in learning vocabulary since (visible in the numbers and on the graph in LingQ and also simply via my general ability to understand when I listen to or read things in the language). Also I tried limiting it to certain types of language, with the idea that the frequency of words or phrases is maybe not the only issue. I hit on the idea of using learning 'indefinite nouns' (nouns that describe a class of things, that are non-specific), for example (for German), these words, which are about a quarter of what it gave me: 'Sache, Ding, Zeug, Objekt, Material, Farbe, Form, Größe, Stelle, Bereich, Art, Typ, System, Einheit, Prozess, Aspekt, Eigenschaft, Wesen, Wesenheit, Gegenstand, Thema, Bestandteil, Element, Zustand, Umstand, Faktor, Teil, Komponente, Phänomen, Konzept, Thema...' I then asked it to randomly choose 5 of these words and use them in any text about anything, and to use each of those 5 words at least twice in the text, and to keep the text under 200 words. It worked very well, and I gave it the same instructions, with some little adjustments, something like 20 times, ending up with a bunch of very good texts. Interestingly, although I didn't ask it like before to limit it to some number of the 'most commonly used words' or to B1 or something, the texts were relative easy to understand, though not too easy. They worked perfectly for me. That language specification meant somehow that the AI limited the texts in other ways. I imported these into LingQ again and they have been very useful in improving my comprehension. I figure with time I'll come up with a lot of ideas to somehow get it to 'focus' in this way, both in terms of lexis and in terms of grammar. Maybe a text using an equal amount of past simple and present perfect, for example, or past perfect and present perfect, etc., etc., maybe lots of participle clauses, or noun phrases, maybe to list the 'most commonly used phrases in academic essays', and then get it to write texts with them, etc., etc., etc. Also I could use it to analyze texts as if it were an applied linguist to see what useful things are there, and then instruct it to create texts focusing on those elements. I also thought about just having an long, ongoing coversation with it in a new language, where it will start simply, I will generate audio for each (or maybe learn the phonetics first, if they're reasonably simple - and maybe it could also indicate word stress, with an underline or something), I will try to make sense of it, then maybe ask for a translation, then give an answer back, or use DeepL to help, or even think of an answer and get ChatGPT to translate it for me. And just keep on coversing and conversing and let words and structures gradually stick in my head in the process. I'll have to think of a language for this. One with straightforward phonetics of both letter to word correlation and also stress patterns would be best. In the end the main thing is to get into the process and to have ideas as you go along, and also get better at instructing it. It looks like it could be very useful.

My target language (Malay) is pretty rare in terms of english learners resources lol. ChatGPT is the best resource I've got so far and even then I spend a lot of time telling it "no, you've made a mistake, even by your own definitions". But it also answers questions for me that I couldn't find other answers for. My biggest gripe is that when it comes to Malay, it doesn't understand language levels at all. I'm not at all C1 or C2, but I have to beg it for "really difficult C2-level" phrases to get anything beyond "Hello!", lol. On the other hand, I get great joy out of asking ChatGPT to explain things to me in strange ways, like pretending it is specific fictional characters or celebrities. So even when the vocabulary isn't up to snuff, the personalized learning is still always a good time :)

Bonjour İclal et merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo (et toutes les autres, d'ailleurs) et tes suggestions intéressantes. Je demande souvent à ChatGPT de corriger les syntaxe, grammaire et orthographe de mes textes, de m'en proposer des formulations plus soutenues ou plus familières, ou de me créer des exercices (qcm, textes à trous, ...) sur un sujet donné. Il lui arrive aussi d'expliquer les corrections qu'il apporte, ce qui est bien pratique 😊

Tried it and I am not impressed. First of all it is lagging too often. Secondly it is repeating same prompts and common courtesy phrases driving me nuts because if further slows down the process. Moreover, you will have to give it very detailed instructions or reiterate them many times because it seems it still is slow with understanding and retention. Exp. If you ask it to create a dialogue and then you have question about a sentence or grammar or anything then after answering it will forget what it was doing in the first place and stop asking you questions of the dialogue. It is also useless when it comes to correcting errors within some number list - it will forget instructions and you will have to remind it all the time. Maybe it just reacts to me like that ..not sure. I got frustrated and called it names many times already. haha
