They are sending mixed signals to their horses... they are yanking their reins EVERYWHERE! Not only are they carelessly pulling, they are asking the horse to back by putting pressure by just pulling back( that's incorrect, you engage a little bit and when the horse moves one foot, you release) then they are kicking/spurring(I couldn't really see what type of spur they had, but it wasn't a English spur that's for sure) that is asking their horses to go forward. How exactly do you go forward and back at the same time? These aren't cowboys or equestrians, they are cruel people that think they are cool.

Excuse me, but you don't know the horse. Look I'm not trying to be rude, but I'm guessing you don't know theses horse personally.Yes, they could've gone in a different approach but a horse in the box is different from have an English horse. But you shouldn't judge when you are not the owner or the rider. Again I'm not being rude, just stating my opinion.

Barrelracer414 Are you blind? You can clearly tell that they aren't skilled with their horses. You don't have to be the owner to judge a person's riding. These horses started out excited, but the riders obviously didn't know their horse or how to control them. I ride and train both western and English disciplined horses, they didn't do the right thing at all. These "riders" shouldn't ride anything but a deadbroke training horse. You can tell they never learned basics.

I agree with you. Thier reins are everywhere and then they over correct the horse and using shank bits with spers which will just confuse the horse more. All the rides are using shank bits, spears, and tie downs. They clearly don't know who to control horses. The horse is just trying the best it can to get the rider to stop hurting and yanking that shank bit. Then when the horse is going back into the starting gate a person touches their rump so the horse thinks it needs to go forward.

Classic examples of shank bits being used HORRIBLY wrong. I hate them anyways but if you're gonna use them then actually know how to use them. They are NOT for pulling and yanking (nor is any bit for that matter) and certainly not for punishment (like the guy in the blue shirt did at the end). What I saw was a lack of training and desensitizing. The guy on the grey needed to be thrown off his horse and trampled. That poor horse was in a lot of pain. All have big bits and tie downs. Train your horse right and you won't need any of that garbage! My little Paso Fino rides in nothing but his little ole rope halter. It's funny because it's actually slightly too big for him yet he's still very responsive in it. The people in this video have most likely cut corners in their training instead of taking the time it takes to actually prepare there horses for this sort of event. Please take the time it takes and do it right!! Your horse will be much better off.

I hate people. I get yelled by "Expert horse riders" for NOT using a bit, whip or spurs. I use rope halters and I don't even kick my horses, and I have absolutely no problems riding in small little playdays, or just trail riding. The only reason I even go to play days is to get my horse use to going out to crowded places. People are so sick and stupid it's unbelievable! They say I'm to young to train my own horses, and that I should always use pain on my horses to control them. I get so sick of listening to people tell me how to ride when their horses are jumping and rearing in pain from a bit and spurs and whips, while my horse just looks around and whinnies excitedly. Are you kidding me people!?

LoneStarRider Never let anyone try to tell you how to train your horse. It sounds as if you have discovered what far too many riders spend years trying to find--communication, a real honest-to-goodness partnership. That comes from treating the horse with respect and kindness. If you take the time to show a horse what you'd like him/her to do, believe me they will do it, willingly. Unlike humans, they don't hold grudges and they don't wake up every morning with the thought "How can I piss off my human today?" We can always learn so much good from horses (and all animals!). I wish you success with your horse and if you choose to make training them a profession, I have no doubt you will be successful. Good luck, and God bless you!

I stumbled into here while surfing. I'm a retired on a small farm guy, and have been around farm animals all of my life. I was president of FFA in high school, and raised four 4H kids as well. And at one time in my life I managed a 3,000 acre ranch, in rough and rugged North Idaho. I said all of the above not to boast, but instead to let you know I'm not blowing smoke. Here's the deal; It requires a tremendous amount of understanding, time, temperance, patience, and communication to be As One with a Horse. (a friend) (Yes, animals do talk to people all the time. So people Must first learn the animal's language, before asking it to work with, and for them). Most part time Cowboys and Cowgirls, are very limited as to how much Time they can Dedicate to their horses. Temperance and Patience as the 'good book' says; The quality or virtue of patience is presented as either forbearance or endurance. In the former sense it is a quality of Self-Restraint or of not giving way to anger, even in the face of provocation. It is attributed to both God and man and is closely related to Mercy and Compassion. If ya gotta be mean to win, ya done gone and lost already. That's my two and a half cents, for what it's worth.

Not all rodeos are like that. I've been to a few rodeos with excellent riders. The curb bit a actually a softer western bit as well. The tie downs are supposed to keep the horse's head from coming back and whacking you in the head, mainly put on hot headed horses such as barrel horses who love to raise their head. I know there are still many rodeos that are not as kind as the ones I attend but still. Not all rodeos are the same. So the "Must be a rodeo" part was kind of offensive to rodeo people who actually care for their animals. Not trying to be rude just stating a fact. :)

  • @KingsMom831

    @KingsMom831

RuthlessPistol13 First, let me start by saying at one point in my life, I would have agreed with your comment 100%. However, over the years, I have educated myself and learned, evolved my way of thinking and if people truly care about their animals they would not treat them this way. This IS typical, at rodeos & most horse/equine/livestock related events & sports. SO, are you saying that you ONLY attend rodeos, that you can say 100%, without a doubt, there is zero abuse happening? I’m sorry, that is just ridiculous! I’d be more inclined to bet that a “fact“ is that at EVERY rodeo there is ALWAYS going to be animal abuse, neglect and ignorance. Same goes for show jumping and other “sports” like Big Lick. Just like, yes, some “rodeo” people DO care about their animals (or care about the prize money). I think it’s both ways. You can’t possibly say that there are specific rodeos that only allow kind people and people who do not abuse their animals. Just like, I cannot say that 100% of participants in 100% of every rodeo are ALL going to be abusive. How can you be that naïve to think that specifically the rodeos you attend do not support & endorse abuse to one degree or another? Tie downs, bits, spurs whips etc are COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY! There’s no reason (especially not the pathetic excuse of “it’s tradition”) to use this type of equipment. You can get the same results from your horse using other tack that DOESNT create pain. For instance, using a BOSAL instead of ANY TYPE OF BIT. Also, horses use their head for balance & a tie down deprives them of that. Not trying to be mean, just stating my opinion.

Horse riding isn't a commercial luxury, it's a discipline for the rider as much as it is for the horse. It is a symbiosis, a companionship. You can't just get on any horse someone says is "trained" and expect automatically to be able to communicate with it. That's like trying to walk up to some stranger in Wal'Mart and talk to them like you're involved in their daily lives. If these rodeos do not change the way they entertain people with the animals, they are going to suffer dire consequences.

These horses seem amped up and a little confused at the same time. Reminds me of barrel horses right before they take off to run barrels. My discipline is not rodeo but I don't see any abuse here. Maybe a little bad horsemanship but no abuse. It would be interesting to see how these horses are trained. It's easy to criticize on the outside looking in and thinking something that looks different from one's own discipline is wrong or abuse. More like prejudice and ignorance on the "lookers" part. My advice would be to learn more about the sport or discipline before calling it abuse. These horses looked fat and slick and very good. Abused horses just don't look that way physically either. Just my opinion.

First off, I in no way support yanking and excessive spurring, however, as I've grown up on the rodeo circuit, it's not uncommon for horses in speed events (barrel racing and roping especially) to be so zonked and seasoned (it's the same shit, just a different arena every rodeo) that they already know what's expected/what they get to do, hence the crow hopping, spinning, multiple attempts at backing into boxes, etc. also, I never saw any major spurring or terrible yanking in this, in fact I've seen worse from eventers going 30mph down hills and over rocks, yes the shanks are too much for these horses, but, they're seasoned rodeo horses being ridden multiple times in one event for 7-10 months out of the year, they don't know any different.

  • @AnimalLeftist

"I never saw any major spurring". So, that guy slamming his spurs into the horses sides wasn't doing anything "major". The yanking was nothing "major". wow.... LOL at the eventers comment. It's makes me sick. These horses obviously don't want to do this, and they most certainly don't want people slapping and spurring them while they are nervous! That only makes it worse! This is absolutely sick, if I was there I'd have a thing or two to say. Heck, this makes me want to go to a rodeo, stand in the middle of the ring, and give them a pice of my mind!

CLEARLY you're not a rider. The only thing these horses in the break away shoots are afraid of are the people on the ground trying to move them. The guys on the ground are telling the horse to do the exact opposite of the rider. See how the ears are perked up straight looking ahead? Yeah. That's the part of the body on a horse to look at for any type of discomfort. Horses like this love their jobs and tend to chase (as here) or work (cutting/penning...) the cows in pastures all by themselves. I've seen 4 month old foals doing it just for fun in the pasture. So please refrain from making judgement calls on issues you have no experience or true practical knowledge of.

It is that the horses are stressed and are worked way to much in the box. What do I mean by that is these horses need a little time to just be a horses and not a competition horses.

However, only a couple of the riders in this video did anything that could be considered "cruel". These horses are covered in muscle, sixteen hands tall, and really excited. All that kicking and pulling of the reins in the video is not hurting them. And they are trying to back them up that is why the riders pull the reins back when the horse starts going forward, they are just communicating that no they don't want to move forward. I am beyond glad that there are people out there advocating for animals. But in this case, I'm not sure it's needed.

So sad. Countless horses who live unhappy lives due to a combination of careless actions typical in this "sport". Well, running horses ruins an otherwise good horse. After a horse learns to run like they do, they are not safe for just anybody. They anticipate and become hard to handle, thus all the artificial aids that these "cowboys" resort to using, like tie downs, severe bits, martingales, not to mention the mostly fat riders who have sloppy seats and most seem to be pulling back, like the goober who snatched his poor horse several times. These poor horses are have learned to be nervous wrecks from aggressive like we see here at this "rodeo" in California. Again, sad.

+ΩHappyHoovesΩ Actually quite the opposite most of these horses seen here are some of the best in the world with some of the best in the world on their back as well. These amazing animals are bred to be "cowy" which basically means they love cattle. so actually with the long score (depth of the boxes on either side of the chutes) the horse don't get scared they actually get hyper or anxious to track the steer. this is why you see most of them with tight reins holding them back until they are ready. IF the horses were in pain or anything besides hyper there ears would be pinned. I fully respect all of your views and opinions just please educate yourself before voicing them

***** I never use spurs with my horses, and they are always excited to get out of the chutes. Why? Because they sense the excitement, they know what's coming, and it mentally stimulates them as equally to physically. Most times YOU DON'T want to wear spurs while in the chutes as it can easily be caught up on something. Spurs are a communication tool in teaching pressure. Spurs are not intended to be used for abuse, and those that use them for abusive purposes, then they should NEVER OWN AN ANIMAL.

rodeo is never ok. for the animals. the whole premise is egotistical and cruel. man (or woman) vs 'beast' they make these animals out to be 'dangerous beasts' who are there to be dominated, controlled, conquered... '. . when the reality is these are gentle animals who would rather live in peace and not the fear and pain rodeo exposes them to.- goaded, provoked, hurt, abused then disposed of.- rodeo is never ok. i spend alot of time with animals especially horses, i know the true nature of a horse very well... they are peaceful animals. as are calves and bulls too...

The guy is pulling on the horses mouth too much I will agree to that although he is really just having some communication problems with the horse. I don't agree with the pulling and kicking at the same time either because that's just confusing the horse. The horse and rider need to trust each other before doing this and the rider needs to learn to respect the horse some more. I understand when you're in the box the horse can get impatient and you need to hold them back but kicking and pulling only confuses the poor horse and jerking the reins around doesn't help. When you make them turn they're feet keep moving. You are trying to stop the horse not make it move back and forth.

Stick any bad rider on any good horse, and you'll get the above "show". I rode a lot of ex-barrel/ropin' horses. Soured and sore and miserable. Don't even need to wonder why.

  • @firesong62

I've helped to load race horses into the gate and I can tell you not all go in calm, they know the job they are about to do and just like humans they get that rush just b4 the race. That is what is happening here too, the horse is jazzed up and ready to run, he knows his job and wants to get it done. Not all rodeo people handle the horses in that way but when you have an animal that weighs close to 2000lbs being hyper you need to get their attention and make them focus. And just like humans again some need a sharp reminder as to what they are supposed to do.

(I would like to bring up the story of baby jesus where Mary rode a donkey/ use the donkey to carry their things)These people are just having the horse run after a calf so they can rope it. if you were to argue that its abuse to rope a calf i would understand and respect your views, but the fact that you are saying its abuse to ask something from a horse that he may not want to do at the time is crap. I have 3 horses and as far as my views go horses are like children sometimes they can be stubborn and not want to do things whats the difference between disciplining a horse and a child? I ride horses regularly and this is normal. What you people are saying is that the horses are "horrified" and the riders are showing "bad horsemanship" First of all, those horses aren't scared they are anxious and ready to run. They are doing what they are trained to do. Which is to back up to the corner of the box and go for broke. Those horses are not full of fear they are full of muscles ready to run to their fullest. Second, those riders are on an animal that is full of raw power, that rider must do everything in their power to control it. If that rider had no horsemanship whatsoever he wouldn't even be on the horse, more or less going to a rodeo. Horses rely on routine just like us. What they know is go to the box, RUN, get calf, halt...........that is what they are doing in the video( but they just want to skip to the RUN part) I myself have witnessed many times when a horse is actually scared, and if those horses are actually full of fear no one in that arena would be able to stop them. What those people and horses are trying to do is win. Which is horsemanship. For some of you that have never ridden a horse or know nothing about horses. I would suppose looking up the facts before spitting out stuff you know nothing about.
