4 things to add for Ryanair 1) they also save costs by not offering their pilots and cabin crew a cab fee or hotel if they need to spend the night somewhere. 2) They charge you insane prices for your luggage 3) They fuel the exact legal minimum of fuel, while others tend to fuel a bit more. This gives them landing priority in some circumstances. 4) Their head offices are in Ireland, which gives them a big tax advantage.

When my ex lived in London, I could visit her frequently because a ticket cost me like 10€. Especially on short flights, there's little to no reason to use a regular flight - even more so when an airport has quick transportation to the main cities. Stanstead has a train that frequently goes to London, and even with the additional cost, it's a fraction of what it would've cost to land anywhere else. If I have to wait ~30 mins more to reach my destination with a slightly longer method, but can visit twice as often, it's a no-brainer. I've also flown with Ryanair at least 30+ times, and only ever had 1 cancelled flight. The total cost, if I want something to eat, pay for extended travelling *and* buy stuff at the airport, is maybe 2/3 of the non-budget flights. But if you're not dumb with your money, the total is generally 25-66% cheaper. In addition to all this, all three of my school trips I went on when I was younger was a lot more exotic because the school could afford it.

  • @LesD9

I remember a time when Ryanair had some completely FREE flights - they even paid the flight fees and taxes! If they could make enough on the upgrades to cover the flight costs they were happy. Just compare flying with grocery shopping. If you went into a store to buy a loaf of bread and they wanted you to pay for a trolley-load, you wouldn't shop there.

*Here is a budget airline joke of Ryanair!* Michael O’Leary, Chief Executive of Ryanair after arriving in a hotel in Manchester went to the bar and asked for a pint of Guinness. The barman said, "That will be £1 please, Mr. O’Leary." Taken aback, O'Leary replied, "That's very cheap," and handed over his money. "We do try to stay ahead of the competition", said the barman. "We have the cheapest beer in England". "That is remarkable value", Michael comments. "I see you don't have a glass, you'll need one of ours. That will be £3 please." O'Leary scowled, but paid up. He took his drink and walked towards a seat. "Ah, you want to sit down?" said the barman. "That'll be an extra £2. If you'd pre-booked it would have cost £1." O'Leary swore to himself, but paid up. "I see you've brought your laptop" added the barman. "That wasn't pre-booked either, that's another £3." O'Leary was so incensed and his face was red with rage. "I've had enough! I insist on speaking to a manager!" "Here is his e-mail address, or if you wish, you can contact him between 9.00 am and 9.01am every morning, Monday to Tuesday. Calls are free, unless answered, then there is a charge of only £1 per second". "I will never use this bar again". "OK but do remember, we are the only hotel in England selling pints for £1."

That's wonderfully cheap!" But then the bartender tells him "And it'll be €1 for the glass, €3 if you want to sit down, €7 if you stand up, €15 to use the loo... "

There was also a 90 minute delay because the group I was traveling with hadn't been registered on the flight because of the airline's own travel agency's failure to do so. In the end, the captain of the aircraft announced that no one would be left behind, but we got 0 time to eat at the airport, baggage got left behind and there was no food in the 5 hour flight.

I just had my first flight with RyanAir (which went all well and good) and was amazed that they literally have 15 minutes between passengers to leave the plane and passengers for next flight to board the plane. Timing is just... incredible. The first thing I noticed was about the pockets on the seats and I tought to myself: "My God, it's so clever!" Because you either give away all your trash to flight attendant ('cause you just don't have anywhere to put it) or leave it in the seat, and it's much easier to pick up. Besides the way they deal with luggage is very flexible and convinient. Of course you have to pay for it, but if you go for 5-6 days you really don't need that 20 kg bag, which is "included" with your ticket for regular air lines.

As an English person who lives near Gatwick this was super relatable and interesting, I really like Budget Airlines as I think they fly really efficiently and I think I prefer them to normal airlines. I don’t like they way they tend to have more delays and sometimes don’t have reserved seating though. I usually fly with EasyJet and it’s genuinely a pretty nice experience, aside from last year where we were flew in an A319 and I literally didn’t fit in my seat. I also really like the way the food works, I much prefer buying my own food with a choice of what I want rather than flying with BA or something that gives me cold bangers and mash and a small choice of drinks.

Also airlines like Ryanair have heavy additional fees. The onboard food is expensive, if your bag is over the weight limit you have a CRAZY fee you have to pay, same if your carry on bag is too big, you will have to pay a lot. They charge you for paying with a card, they charge you if you didn't print out your own boarding pass, you are charged if you didn't check-in online. Additionally, the plane cabin is hardly ever clean, there's no inflight entertainment, the cabin has adverts everywhere, there's not even a proper safety card, it's printed onto the seat in front of you. Also, they pack you in like sardines.

However many times even if I add a luggage and buy on board, the total fare still tops out to less than that of a traditional carrier. However not all of the time. I have paid a rip off fare for easyJet, and seen fares for traditional carriers cheaper than its low-cost rivalries.

Am I missing something here? Assuming car travel, and that the heart of London is Piccadilly (or anywhere within Zone 1), I've required almost twice as long to travel between London and Gatwick/Luton etc compared to London-Heathrow, even with traffic. Public transport is also more varied and convenient as mentioned, so Heathrow is undoubtedly first choice personally.

Some additions to the video: 1, The young fleet is more efficient not only because the more modern engines but also low maintenance cost and maintenance time, as older planes are needed to be serviced and checked more. 2, Big low-cost carriers usually sell the purchased aircrafts right after they buy it at a profit, then lease it back from the buyer company so they can actually make cash this way.

Your #2 is confounding me as I try & determine how that would work. Is it due to the fact that they buy in bulk so they get the plane much cheaper too the point where they could sell it at an even lower price point than if the buyer were to just go & buy a new plane directly from the manufacturer?

  • @ozirobi

@@dustinspeicher3390 Exactly. If the airline has a huge order, the bulk price is so much cheaper that they can sell it at a multi-million profit to their future leasors, increasing their liquidity and cash.

As someone who files low cost rather often, I can add some more ways the low-cost airlines use to make money: 1. Seat selection. Ryanair and Wizz offer seat selection at a price. When you purchase a ticket, you are assigned a random seat from the lowest tier (of course its price is added to the ticket price). If you want a window seat - you need to pay more. If you need additional leg space - even more, etc. 2. Mentioning leg space - they try to cramp in a few additional rows of seats by reducing the space between the rows. So people like me - taller, with longer legs, find this rather uncomfortable. 3. Luggage - unlike regular airlines that include one or two pieces of luggage in the ticket, low cost airlines only include one piece of carry luggage like a purse or a laptop bag. Anything beyond this has to be paid for. This is actually rather convenient, as basically you pay only for what you use and me and my wife have been on a number of trips with only hand luggage.

I have to thank Ryanair for the last 15 flights with them, it was cheaper then dirt and i was able to discover major cities in europe just for fun at ther weekend. Just arrived from Dublin ireland, 4 weeks ago i was in lisboa. I can not say anything negative about them, not for that price. Honestly i dont need any service for a 2-3 hour flight, with other airlines you get a meal for free but who needs that on a 2 hour flight. I dont care using busses to the planes or walk a bit, its like 50m. I just planned the next fligth to napoli

Why pay like £400 if you can pay £50. You need to have a serious superiority complex or a very generous employer to make expensive flying around Europe make any sense.

So the age of the plane is also due to another fact: The lifespan of an airplane is usually determined by the frequency of pressurization and depressurization of the cabin. Big carriers fly a large long haul fleet, which consists of planes that are less frequently pressurized due to the longer hauls the serve. This increases the lifespan of the large planes. Budget carriers often only fly locally or continental. The smaller palnes are pressurized far more often, wich reduces the lifespan and calls for new orders and purchases more frequently. This is also why you regularly find 747s or a340s, that have been flying for 15 years or more, you barely ever find a 737, that has been going for this amount of time

That's a lot of passengers, and a lot of money, especially since I'd say a third of the passengers buy their ticket within a week of travelling, when prices are at least 5 times higher. The hidden and extra fees for Ryanair can be crazy though!!

The population density of the United States and Europe are vastly different. The US has lots of open land and its major cities are spread further apart than Europe's. Because of this, budget airlines like Southwest and jetBlue are forced to fly longer routes which cost more money than flying in Europe. However, this does have consequences that benefit the travelers. Since routes in the United States are longer than those in Europe, travelers are more likely to value luxury and amenities when it comes deciding which airline to fly. So, airlines like Southwest offer more amenities such as free WiFi and checked baggage to offset the higher wages that it costs to fly the longer routes in the United States.

quite well documented with a few misakes, like, airbridges sometimes are mandatory (for example in Madrid we almost always have one), but they make boarding and disembarking twice as slow, typically a ryanair turnaround is 25 minutes (believe me it's sooo hard to comply with, lucky us, we're often early so we have more time, or if we lose a few minutes it should be recovered during the flight), but with an airbridge it goes to 35 minutes (in theory, in practice it's almost 45), also flight attendants don't go to the gate, check in and boarding agent is someone else's job (at least in ryanair), often made from another company (swissport, LESMA, aviapartner), sometimes they're direct ryanair employees and have a flight attendant uniform but that's just the uniform. Also, I saying they're targetting tourists is wrong, tourists often travel with luggages or need more than just the simple ticket anyways, sometimes it's cheaper to fly with traditionnal airlines, yes a lot of routes are made for tourists, but IMO where ryanair thrives is with destinations that see people going from home to work/studies (loads of businessmen, but also students or people working in another country, or commuting to see family/girlfriend etc), that's due to the world being very open and people travelling a lot for more than leisure Also, no mention on fuel, no huge savings to be made at first sight but in ryanair, fuel is 2/3rd of the costs if I'm not mistaken, and ryanair has procedures to save sometimes as little as 10kg of fuel per flight (I mean for one procedure, like for example to use the APU less, or turn off an engine after landing, or carrying the bare minimum of fuel to be lighter), but multiply it by the number of flights a year and it becomes millions

I flew from Tenerife to London on Ryanair to catch my international business flight from London to USA. It was cheap, efficient and on time. But I assumed London - Stanstead, where it flew, was within "London" or vicinity and getting to Heathrow after wasn't huge deal. Turns out it was a nearly 2 hr cab ride which completely negates all the cost savings of Ryanair. They should NOT be allowed to advertise their airports they land as if part of the big city they are advertising they fly to. Its deceptive, and that cost is passed to the consumer but it's not apparent to the consumer when all they see is the web advertised flight price.
