How Britain Got China Hooked on Opium I Empires of Dirt

Ойын-сауық

VICE World News host Zing Tsjeng delves into her own family history to remember that time the British Empire was one of the worst drug pushers in history and got China hooked on opium.
Empires of Dirt is a show about Europeans getting rich at the expense of everyone else. VICE World News host Zing Tsjeng uncovers the ugly history of the European colonial empires they don’t teach us in schools. Countries around the world were looted for their treasures, people were oppressed and exploited and European powers relentlessly profited. The far-reaching repercussions of colonialism are all around us, from our financial institutions to the food we have in our cupboards at home - and it’s about time we took notice.

@Jefe Greedy You poor, unfortunate soul. You know nothing about history. The opium wars started in 1839, by which time Britain was already the most dominant nation, in the history of the planet, economically and militarily and had been for many decades. I am not a patriot, because I hate exploitation of any kind, but unlike you, delusional Yankees, I do insist on being objective about things and calling out BS.Fact is that the Brits, were the only empire, who actually had positive humanitarian aspects to it, as well as committing atrocities, like any other empire. All should be included, for a balanced, modern perspective and the fact that these details are suppressed, is what has led to the victimisation culture prevailing in black communities, in the US(which is deliberate and counter-productive to African-Americans succeeding) and also has led to the prevailing distortion, of the goals of the original feminist movement, which have lied about Britain pioneering a dominant male patriarchy, as meaning delusional modern women seek to gain what a man wants, instead of what women traditionally wanted, back in the day and the state has changed The legal parameters to Support them, at the eexpense of men, e.g. divorce law At least the Brits hegenomy was built mainly on self endeavour and innovation, e.g. with being the pioneers of free society, with separation of the monarchy from Parliament and the pioneers of human rights in ratified legislation and free law courts, all of which the US system, the entire Anglosphere and every modern constitutional system, is based on.Whereas The Americans became a superpower, by staying out of 2 world wars and fighting proxy wars, both times to make European powers, indebted to them, by originally "only" selling munitions and raw materials, then manipulating conditions for the dollar being a reserve currency and financial parameters favouring the US market following Bretton Woods.

Just to home delivery wheels??? Good that you believe that, it's great to create your wealth by ripping off people all over and then preach grand ideas such as democracy, human rights, "war on drugs". When the existence of the same people and their generations to come is a direct result of exploitation. Example, here British for their unending greed, killed and destroyed lives for their profit! And the same everywhere, all modern day issues, conflicts and human suffering can be traced back to colonization. My point is if colonies had nothing why go there in the first place?? It's ok, I am for one don't hold grudges. Things kinda work out in their weird twisted ways. I am sure all the injustices done will come back to the same colonizers. Like the broke ass countries in Europe and your very own UK facing their drug epidemic. The Chinese own most of London, the Indians also started buying off so-called prestige British brands. So guess what's goes around, comes around. With that thought wishing you a great weekend ahead! Live long and watch the demise!

The British merely sold opium to Chinese merchants in Canton, who then were the ones who distributed and pushed the drug within China. The only reason the British did this was the balance out the unequal trade policies imposed by the Qing empire which demanded that Chinese merchants buy no goods at all from the western powers, only sell to them. Turns out that opium was the one thing these Chinese traders would defy their emperor to get their hands on, and they became massively wealthy from it, addicting their 'countrymen' to something that had been used in China for centuries already. Turning wide swaths of the population into opioid addicts unknowingly since the risk hasn't been explained and the "benefits" are undeniable. Basically predatory drug dealers with state approval. Im for the legalization of all drugs. dont get me wrong. But predatory drug dealers that sell to minors, pregnant women or give free "samples" do exist.
