How Blind People Helped Create Apple TV+ SEE | Behind the Scenes

Apple invited me to the set of SEE starring Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard. I was asked for my feedback on how the show represented blindness and I met with multiple blind and low vision actors who played roles on the show. At the premiere of SEE I share my impressions of watching with audio descriptions.

Thanks for the video. I was really mesmerized by the visuals, story-building and creating this world and how people would live and navigate. Now with your video, it's even more interesting to watch the series.

I've watched I think 2 times... Each time is understanding a different thing. This is amazing. I would love and hate to be shadow... She's such a nicely discrete person. I want to be her lol

I just recently started watching this & it increases my respect for people who are visually impaired a hundredfold. I wonder while watching, at the confidence of the characters to traipse off into the complete unknown, with nothing to lead them but each other. Do visually impaired people ever achieve that level of confidence as the thought of it makes me want to freeze in place? I can understand that you can move around your own environment without hesitation, as I often do that myself in the dark. But to go into the unknown wilderness & move so rapidly? Even sighted people miss things & trip or get caught on trees. Knowing now that there are visually impaired actors makes me wonder about this even more, as although I have definitely identified some people who are all too obviously seeing their way as they match around the set, I haven’t picked any one person who is obviously visually impaired, so there must be that element of confidence in a little known environment. I am glad that a film like this makes you contemplate things you don’t know.

I really enjoyed the series. I've been trying to get several people to watch it, but no one wants to pay for Apple TV+, so oh well. The world building is amazing, and I love the familial and tribal relationships portrayed throughout the series. Also, as a polyglot, I very much appreciate the linguistic touches they added, like the knots and the tactile language. However, one thing I haven't liked about the show is my need to argue with people on the internet about how X,Y, & Z is just soooo unrealistic. Because apparently blind people are incapable of putting on their own shoes in the morning, much less living, loving, fighting, and surviving without sighted people.

Honestly, I personally think the most unrealistic thing I saw was when Juralmerel(not sure of spelling, pardon me) got all that stuff where they went to build their new village all in his own. Cz I get he’s not blind, but does he really have the strength to pull all that off by himself? 🤔

James, sorry to bother you in the comments, but I don’t know of any other way to bring this up. Do you think you could get audio description for the clips that you included in this video of you on the set? The reason I ask is that I am visually impaired myself, and I’m having trouble understanding your video because there are no audio descriptions for the clips you included.

Believe you and me I've been advocating for KZread to incorporate the ability to add descriptions to videos but they won't budge. I'll see what I can do this month in terms of an entirely new export with descriptions.

Yeah I know! It’s ridiculous. They just need to allow people to associate multiple audio tracks with the video. Anyways, thanks! That would be awesome if you could get a separate version with descriptions! I’ve seen that done for a few things here on KZread in the past.

the series doesn't make ANY sense at all... it's borderline insane. the blind couldn't do 80% of the things they do in the show and then there's the ones who can see and they can't even beat a blind man in combat? give me a fucking break...
