How Bill Belichick innovated his defense (again).
Спорт
Bill Belichick has innovated his defense again, and they are once again one of the best defenses in football. Despite the fact that they are devoid of superstar talent, Belichick has them playing as a top 5 unit, and the way he does it is quite unique. The Patriots use “Dime” personnel packages more than any other defenses in the league, and it’s what has set them apart. This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick’s innovations on defense.

Do you remember how Pats lost HFA in last drive of the last game in 2019 season? Do you remember how Pats lost to Raiders and Packers last season after leading 24-17 in 4th quarters? You mean *the PAPER TIGER defense that routinely collapsed in 4th quarters?* He was genius in the rocks on the shoulders of his fans ONLY BECAUSE they completely ignore his bad times. 2002 SB against Rams (Brady saved him); 2004 SB against Panthers (Brady saved him); 2007 AFCCG against Colts; 2008 SB against Giants; 2012 SB against Giants; 2015 SB against Seahawks (Brady’s 28 points and Pete Carrol saved him); 2018 SB against Eagles; 2019 AFCCG against Chiefs (Brady saved him).

@@williamli6200 LIke I wrote is difficult to take away multi-dimensional aliens at QB like Allen for 4 quarters. Few tested defenses have fared better and opposing teams that have had success has an offense on the other side to pound away on the Bills glass defense themselves. I don't know what the points example is suppose to correlate. Even the 'best' defenses in previous years gets dunked on by great passing offenses. What is important is how the defense play callers navigate the game plans on a weekly basis and have a plan to attack late passing downs and find pressures on QB along with adapting to their personnel. And BB has navigated all that with the best of the those defensive style coaches. *That is why he was never able to achieve anything without Parcel's offense or Brady's offense.* So you are telling me you need to be dynamic and balanced on both sides of the ball to have a high ceiling to win the Conference champ game and even the SB? Its incredible to see what he has done over the years. His defense looks nothing like the Ty Law, McGinest, Bruschi, Lawyer Milloy, R. Seymour, era... People have covered videos of how the league copied his fronts but he is doing it with d list celebrities. Most teams / fanbases would shit their pants if they had the rosters he seems to endlessly make top 5/10.
I think the personnel also gets really underappreciated. They might not have the same star power as other teams, but about 9 guys who I'd say are at least above average starters and close to like 17 who are guys who'd be starting on most teams, with a great blend of holdovers from before Tom Brady left (Deatrich Wise Jr., JuWhaun Bentley), free agency acquisitions (Davon Godchaux, Matthew Judon, Jalen Mills, Adrian Phillips, Jabrill Peppers), and draft picks (Christian Barmore, Kyle Dugger, Josh Uche, etc;). Each of their top three picks (Gonzalez, Keion White and Marte Mapu) are all guys with awesome upside and all directly fill holes that the defense had last year, and honestly it just feels like each year since about 2018, Belichick has been just working to get closer and closer to the perfect defense.

BB's dime package setup is meant for passing downs and even has the setup to fight 3rd down play action formations with the potential post snap change up. He doesn't default to it like teams playing sub packages (nickel) as default. BB will keep the big bodies at LB in early downs and at least the first half. The versatility comes of the package shows up against the pass because he can still play man but has safeties to play short coverages and still being able to pass off receivers to other DBs like zone esque assignments.
im glad they are getting jc back in there imma look out for this package cool vid
Not a pats fan, but I’ve noticed the same with them throughout the last few years. They play with a lot of speed and DBs, and almost try to trick you into throwing because they’ll crowd the LOS as well. Seems like a simple idea, but the fact most teams aren’t doing it as much and having as much success it is probably very difficult to consistently execute. Just a GOAT being a GOAT (Bill Bell.)

Brady is obviously Brady but these fanatics who dismiss what Belichick has done just to prop up Brady as more than a QB really don't understand how this football thing works. Why do people act like they know what's happening from a TV broadcast angle?
It's interesting that for all the fluid innovations in his defensive philosophy, he's seemingly stuck w/ the Okie front, instead of switching to a Tite front, especially in combination w/ Mint and dime packages. I'm guessing that the extra pressure brought by their D precludes much of the need for clogging both B gaps, b/c it essentially ends up doubling as a run blitz.
I’m glad you brought this video to life. The collection of players they have gives this scheme a dimension not many others can have. Excited to see what this defense can do with (hopefully) a competent offense and special teams can do to give them more breaks and better field position.
These videos are awesome! They make me interested in watching teams, to watch these schemes, that I usually wouldn't be interested in watching. Major networks should adopt more of this in-depth analysis, to bring in more interest, instead of always catering to casual, surface-level fans, fantasy watchers, and gamblers.

I already like Mack Jones, even before the start of NFL season. The way to a great season for the Patriots is for every department and every specialty team to perform. That's what Bill Belacheck did exceptionally during the years with Brady as QB. Another way is to to protect the quarterback and to prevent him from being sacked; almost every time. This way the Quarterback will perform even better at the next ball game of the Patriots. He will perform and throw highly accurate accurate fast throws to all catchers to the best of his abilities. Every time a quarterback is sacked, there is a chance he may not perform as well if injured during a sack or two.
Hr also likes to pick up safeties that are a bit heavy and between safeties and lbs to roam the middle and still be able to tackle a rb at full speed

anyone else have the audio cut in and out the whole video. I thought I was lagging, but it has plenty of buffer and the 4 ads that played all had no issues, my internet connection is great... is it just in the video file, I havent seen this happen before.

Tom Brady became good at reading defenses because bill taught him. Tom Brady is BB with an arm. People forget Tom Brady has the highest 3rd down conversion rate. The only way that happens is if you understand defense.
The Patriots, defensive line is going to be a lot more better than it was last year because they added a guy by the name of keion white who was drafted in the second round who can play inside and out along with being a physical freak of nature.

Let's see how good he looks with the Oline he has this year.
George Allen was doing this in the 60s.
This is what Darnold means when he sees "ghosts" lol
This reminds me of the old Ravens defense except Bill is doing all the moving, shifting and versatility in the secondary when the old Ravens did it with the front 7. Smart defense really.
Judon is Patriots best defender as of right now but I think Dugger is the key piece that unlocks it. Wouldn’t be surprised if Dugger is the best defender on the Pats at the end of the season.
The defensive stats also decreased because they spent 40+ mins on the field every game
Sitting our number 1 corner during the superbowl was the icing on the cake for me. Brady threw for over 505 yards and 3 tds. Bill threw the game for his own personal reasons, which to this day nobody knows.

How many super bowls would brady have even made it to without bill shutting down multiple top 20 all time offenses. Colts always avg more points than brady when they faced but bill held Manning down for those wins. Greatest show on turf, falcons were scoring 35 bill only gave up 21, rams were scoring 30 bill gave up 3.

Makes me extremely happy the Lions stole Brian Branch from Belicheck lol. Branch would have been perfect for him. I believe if Gonzalez was gone at 17, Branch would have been taken at 17 instead.

Being free from Matt Patricia helps.
Was the Cover 0 with Zone, the Pats used against the Eagles this past week (week 1) a new wrinkle?
Alex, this is the kind of distraction I needed after the Lance situation. I am team Brock, and have been since he stared down that "Belichick Special" 8 man pressure Miami sent at him and delivered a strike to Kittle. You know the play, you have covered it many times before, where he will send the house and teach guys who are accounted for to drop off to middle zones just to get a free rusher at the QB. that being said, the 49ers did Lance dirty and it makes me feel sick inside to call myself a fan of the 49ers right now.

All the geniuses that criticize Bill for favoring the defense would be criticizing him for not building a better defense if he favored offense. There is no way for a human being to be equally invested in all three phases of the game, and he is smart to take advantage of his ability to design and build defenses, and delegate the rest to his coordinators. And it's not the post Brady era, it's the post Brady, Gronk, Julian, Josh, Dante, Ernie era, and you don't rebuild all that in one or two years.
Without a franchise quarterback, it doesn't matter what the defensive is , you're not winning championships.
Still sub .500 without Brady as Patriots coach.
Nick Saban and Bill Belichick are good freinds. That defense is Cover 7 and the Alabama use the same defense.

Y’all don’t get it that 7 win mediocre patriots team really wasn’t that good, the defense opted out during covid(most main starters and some backups as well) no matter who says what cam newton wasn’t good for the team production wise, yeah he was big so when he was close he could get in, but for every drive like that cam would do something that make you say wow then fumble or throw a pick, the most memorable reciever was damere Byrd (he was the only guy who could get any separation because he was fast). That team had the talent to win 4 games max, they really should’ve ranked and competed for Trevor instead of mac but nonetheless, time and time again the man shows his worth as a coach, yet the mainstream media makes it seem like there’s a better option outside those walls and honestly it’s ludacris, no disrespect to jerod mayo in time he will do fine kinda like a Brian Flores with player experience, but to say bill needs to be fired? Crazy talk by the media. Let’s mot forget what happened last year again you could argue with how bad the offense was 8-9 was overachieving, I actually enjoyed watching the defense more than the offense because the defense was everything the offense wasn’t , fast , explosive to the ball, smart, they all seemed to have great hands, jack jones despite being a bonehead is honestly a good db with the potential to be great if he stays out of trouble after this
