How Bill Belichick innovated his defense (again).

Спорт

Bill Belichick has innovated his defense again, and they are once again one of the best defenses in football. Despite the fact that they are devoid of superstar talent, Belichick has them playing as a top 5 unit, and the way he does it is quite unique. The Patriots use “Dime” personnel packages more than any other defenses in the league, and it’s what has set them apart. This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick’s innovations on defense.

You mean *the PAPER TIGER defense that routinely collapsed in 4th quarters?* He was genius in the rocks on the shoulders of his fans ONLY BECAUSE they completely ignore his bad times. 2002 SB against Rams (Brady saved him); 2004 SB against Panthers (Brady saved him); 2007 AFCCG against Colts; 2008 SB against Giants; 2012 SB against Giants; 2015 SB against Seahawks (Brady’s 28 points and Pete Carrol saved him); 2018 SB against Eagles; 2019 AFCCG against Chiefs (Brady saved him).

Few tested defenses have fared better and opposing teams that have had success has an offense on the other side to pound away on the Bills glass defense themselves. I don't know what the points example is suppose to correlate. Even the 'best' defenses in previous years gets dunked on by great passing offenses. What is important is how the defense play callers navigate the game plans on a weekly basis and have a plan to attack late passing downs and find pressures on QB along with adapting to their personnel. And BB has navigated all that with the best of the those defensive style coaches. *That is why he was never able to achieve anything without Parcel's offense or Brady's offense.* So you are telling me you need to be dynamic and balanced on both sides of the ball to have a high ceiling to win the Conference champ game and even the SB? I was keeping track of these defensive picks from BB which seemed 'ludicrous' then (Dugger who was a Div II stand out in the 2nd round was called as a reach by many). But some of these day 2-3 picks may not have panned out. Uche was nearly forgotten until he put on a helluva season last year and showing off his really good bend getting at the QB. Barmore has the athleticism but isn't exactly a 3-down lineman yet. Ronnie Perkins and Anfernee Jennings are situational big linebackers. I think the personnel also gets really underappreciated. They might not have the same star power as other teams, but about 9 guys who I'd say are at least above average starters and close to like 17 who are guys who'd be starting on most teams, with a great blend of holdovers from before Tom Brady left (Deatrich Wise Jr., JuWhaun Bentley), free agency acquisitions (Davon Godchaux, Matthew Judon, Jalen Mills, Adrian Phillips, Jabrill Peppers), and draft picks (Christian Barmore, Kyle Dugger, Josh Uche, etc;). Each of their top three picks (Gonzalez, Keion White and Marte Mapu) are all guys with awesome upside and all directly fill holes that the defense had last year, and honestly it just feels like each year since about 2018, Belichick has been just working to get closer and closer to the perfect defense.

BB's dime package setup is meant for passing downs and even has the setup to fight 3rd down play action formations with the potential post snap change up. He doesn't default to it like teams playing sub packages (nickel) as default. BB will keep the big bodies at LB in early downs and at least the first half. The versatility comes of the package shows up against the pass because he can still play man but has safeties to play short coverages and still being able to pass off receivers to other DBs like zone esque assignments.

It's interesting that for all the fluid innovations in his defensive philosophy, he's seemingly stuck w/ the Okie front, instead of switching to a Tite front, especially in combination w/ Mint and dime packages. I'm guessing that the extra pressure brought by their D precludes much of the need for clogging both B gaps, b/c it essentially ends up doubling as a run blitz.

Belichick used a lot of Dime throughout his coaching career. He told the story of how he shutdown the Lions Run & Shoot Offense when he was the NY Giants DC by matching speed with speed & he ran Dime all through the game . The result? I already like Mack Jones, even before the start of NFL season. The way to a great season for the Patriots is for every department and every specialty team to perform. That's what Bill Belacheck did exceptionally during the years with Brady as QB. Another way is to to protect the quarterback and to prevent him from being sacked; almost every time. This way the Quarterback will perform even better at the next ball game of the Patriots. He will perform and throw highly accurate accurate fast throws to all catchers to the best of his abilities. Every time a quarterback is sacked, there is a chance he may not perform as well if injured during a sack or two.

I get what your saying but the opposite is definitely what occurred more often. When Brady struggled to put points up, which was quite often, the defense is what kept them in the game and gave him many opportunities and possessions. I mean this is evident in the scoreboards and if you look at stats in their playoff games. Brady did what you said but it was definitely the opposite more of the time. I mean the dude is 2-0 leading his offense to 13pts or less. rest of nfl history is 0-25. he led the offense to 9.7ppg in 2001 playoffs and won the SB. He didnt even show up for the 2018 SB and won by the defense holding #1 offense rams to just 3pts. in ALMOST every game Brady struggled he was able to still win because of this. this is undeniable

There is no way for a human being to be equally invested in all three phases of the game, and he is smart to take advantage of his ability to design and build defenses, and delegate the rest to his coordinators. That team had the talent to win 4 games max, they really should’ve ranked and competed for Trevor instead of mac but nonetheless, time and time again the man shows his worth as a coach, yet the mainstream media makes it seem like there’s a better option outside those walls and honestly it’s ludacris, no disrespect to jerod mayo in time he will do fine kinda like a Brian Flores with player experience, but to say bill needs to be fired? Crazy talk by the media. Let’s mot forget what happened last year again you could argue with how bad the offense was 8-9 was overachieving, I actually enjoyed watching the defense more than the offense because the defense was everything the offense wasn’t , fast , explosive to the ball, smart, they all seemed to have great hands, jack jones despite being a bonehead is honestly a good db with the potential to be great if he stays out of trouble after this
