    Any race can use any armor, but the armor will change with the race. Instead of making 8 individual armors for each armor, there is one armor that connects to points on the 'paper doll' and a few racial changes added. This system was developed so they can try to add other changes, like religion or achievements

    My thought is that they'll release Alpha 2 updates based off/during their agile sprints. Maybe the pipeline will look like: Feature completion, implementation, testing phase, patching, rinse and repeat. Definitely with multiple things concurrently being worked on. I don't know how long their sprints are, I always skip through all of the studio stuff XD, but maybe like 3 weeks per sprint? It's also entirely possible that they release each iteration.

  • @TheToledoTrumpton

    @TheToledoTrumpton

    I'm not a huge fan of Agile, simply because when it goes wrong it goes spectacularly wrong. Particularly when a non-technical customer is super-user approving sprints, and it is only being used because the customers don't know what they want, or are too incompetent to write it down. That wasn't the case here and it was more a case of Intrepid using Agile so the designers could delegate more creativity to their programmers, while still keeping tabs on them, and minimizing integration problems. It has probably taken longer, but it has resulted in a much higher quality product. I would describe it as, "Agile done right". However to a certain extent once you get to Alpha 2, you are done with Agile because your design is largely over. Right now they are testing the Alpha2 engine in a more closed test, but by the time they go into open Alpha 2, they will be pretty certain that they have the functional specification of Ashes of Creation 95% correct, there is no need to sprint, because you shouldn't be having any redesign issues coming up. They, and we, know pretty much how things are going to function, it is just a case of adding Art and content data, and a lot of inheritance. That is why I am optimistic of a release next year. I think they will be into a waterfall soon, and it is pretty much going to be bug fixing and fleshing out content, not redesign. If they are genuinely sprinting in Alpha2 then they are in deep trouble, because a redesign issue is going to necessitate a rewrite of all the art and content dependent on that functionality. I think we are already seeing that acceleration of progress.

    @@TheToledoTrumpton I don't like Agile either, especially since my experience with it has been with Enterprise companies which have been ran terribly (e.g. SAFe Agile + the non-technical leadership you mentioned above. Ick). I just remember Steven bringing up that his team functioned as an Agile team and was working towards Milestone 11 (or something, my memory is foggy). A little off-topic, but I feel like this idea of Agile done right is often amorphous, and usually brought up when teams completely butcher their execution of Agile (not that I think Intrepid has done a bad job, I'm liking the progress I've seen, especially recently). Now regarding a release next year, I think that's a tall order. I personally think we'll see a release in 2026/2027, but this is pure speculation on my part. We could see something at the end of the month though that indicates increased cadence.

    It is just going to be a case of how many artists and content creators (story arc, POI, dungeon/raid designers etc.) they can throw at it. However, I do think that even that gets faster and copy/paste starts to become possible. It is even possible/likely that even that sort of thing may be generated, and once they have one going, making 100 of them is no issue. Nowadays, it is the work of a minute to use AI to, "Rewrite this quest, only change the gender/race of the quest-giver, and make them angrier!" Similarly they can use AI to create models, once they have something to copy, and the art design software is out of this world. It is now the 21st century, I'd be shocked if it wasn't out next year.

    Personally I prefer smaller regular updates for multiple reasons : 1- As you mentionned, feedback will be focused on that small batch of features released. 2- similar to a CICD methodology but with players feedback, if issues of early iterations / partial realization of a feature are not fitting player expectations or has negative feedback, they can modify it and integrate feedback earlier in the feature development loop compared to if they release the full feature, and then something core to the feature is not well received and they have to break it and recreate it wasting dev time 3- Keeping testers engaged, instead of playing for ~1-2 weeks and then not engage ith the game as much until another big update releases a month+ later to then again have a spike of players for 1-2 weeks, with regular small updates, players continuously have things to test, and with the added features / content, it is much harder for a 'meta' to be established as the game is fluidly evolving along the players 4- involving alpha testers early in a feature's development might provide them with unforseen ideas for the evolution of that feature. I like to call this process emergent development. Just with the sheet amount of A2 players, amazing original ideas are bound to emerge idk what you think of these

    Considering the way to drop content I think dropping regularly bigger chunks of content will be better overall for more feedback. People will naturally drop off the game after some time. And adding larger chunks of content will be way more likely to drag people back in than having small pieces of new stuff dropped every week or two. A 2-3 month cycle might be a good spot.

    Obviously if it sucks it's curtains for the development team, that's the same for any new company launching a new product, if it don't sell, company goes bye bye. As for the "milking" comment, the money Intrepid studies has received is mostly Steven Shariff's own finances, partly investor funded and partly fan funded through kickstarter and people buying the alpha packs. The big difference that Ashes of Creation has compared to the many, many, many, many other scams, broken promises, mis-sold dogshit that's come before is the fact that they're doing an open development. We get to see the majority of this game being built and tested with our own eyes, they have an entire community department that's set up to gather feedback from their forums, KZread videos, Twitch streams, etc and collate that for the developers of the game to use. While all of this is no guarantee that the game will be good, it's a bloody decent and refreshing attempt by the genre to give the players a good MMO that isn't pay-to-win BS. Fingers crossed it comes out soon! Realistically I think it'll be another 2-3 years for it's release, I hope sooner.

    @@user-zz9pj2xz7m yeah I'm the same mate, can't wait for it. I've loved MMO's for years and have kept an eye on the space over the years. It's been pretty disappointing the direction the genre has gone, "Single player game with other people around who you don't need to do anything with" or else it's Pay to Win because the company isn't doing a subscription model for fear that it's a barrier to entry so they need to make money somehow from their "Free to play" approach. They also sell cosmetics to make money too which guts the in-game progression, "why grind this hard quest/craft to get the gear when I can just buy it from the in-game shop". It's shallow thinking from the games companies, short term money but long-term the player base checks out as there's nothing fulfilling from the gameplay. It's also doesn't incentivise the Devs to continually make the game better, whereas, if it's a subscription model the Devs are forced to improve and build upon the game otherwise they lose player subscriptions. "Live and die by the subscriptions" is the phrase used and I wholeheartedly agree. I used to play this game "Dofus" which had a subscription but also a free to play zone, no barrier to entry to try out different classes. I hope Ashes of Creation does something similar
