I wish you had a presence in Columbus Ohio. I've interviewed 4 companies, 2 have come out. On getting here they all told me they don't actually do doors even though that's in their advertisement. Only one of them was going to dig all the way down to the foundation. The others would you stick down enough to put the window and window well in, with about three or four inches of gravel. No drain tying into the existing weep tile. Price is ranging from 5 to 11,000

My walkout drain has nowhere for the water to go . We have been putting a pump inside the drain hooked on with a hose so it can pump the water out into the yard. We did not know this when we bought the house until it rained very heavily one day . What do you suggest

Great video, but do you have any cad details or pdf of how you would build that drain? I'm trying to design a plan for a walkout with that type of drain for a 4x8 landing at the bottom of 7 stairs.

When we design a walkout, the drain detail is part of what we draw in the plans. Each one is different as far as how much gravel, the size of container, and the depth of the gravel. These are all factors that change based on how much water is anticipated to enter the drain.

I like this idea, it's quite straight forward. I am concerned with water softening the soil under the foundation. Any thoughts? Thanks.

That is a valid point. Water ends up in the soil and down around the footings all around the house naturally throught the year, with storms, rain, and snow, etc. The water that comes from the stairs/ walkout and ends up down by the footing is considered a normal amount of water that would end up down by the footing anyway if the stairs were not there. We have not experienced any structural failures, or issues with soils near the footings due to the drain, as this drain system has been approved by civil engineers, structural engineers, and local city governments. If water is a big concern, you can also do a sump pump style drain, where the drain water is collected in a container, and when the water level rises to a certian point in the container, an electric pump turns on and pumps the water up and out of the walkout. Normally somewhere in the yard. These are a great alternative to the drain we explain in this video, but do require more maintence over time, as electrical and mechanical components will eventually fail at some point.

@@DansieDesignBuild thank you for such a thorough explanation. That makes sence. It never occurred to me that this water is normal, the drainage just helps permeate the soil quicker but there is no extra water. I will definitely be doing this. Thanks!

@@RedBeard20842 Just make sure that the landscaping around the stairs slopes away from the stairs, so you are not funneling surface runoff water down there. Rain gutter pipes etc.

Hello @DansieDesignBuild when you use the five gallon bucket. Do you drills the holes 🕳 or is there a place you can get it with the holes already predrilled? Thank you!

@@DansieDesignBuildthank you for replying. When you say drill holes on the bottom. Do you put the lid on the bucket? Also, I started digging for my walkout basement and once I got to six feet deep. Water started to come out. At this situation Would you recommend also installing a sump pump? Thank you in advance!

Is the 5 gallon container you put in empty or do you put gravel in there as well? Because if it's empty wouldn't it be dangerous to step directly on the drain? (In case it breaks inwards with weight)

  • @DansieDesignBuild

    @DansieDesignBuild

    2 жыл бұрын

Hi Ale, You should not put the gravel inside the container. This space is for water to go while it is percolating into the soil. The concrete slab is typically 4” thick(or greater) and will not have an issue supporting the weight you would find in a residential application, like a landing at the bottom of a basement walkout entry. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

What do you do if that kind of drain does get clogged?

Over the course of 20 or 30 years the drain may accumulate some dirt and debris. This can be cleaned out by removing the screws on the drain grate, reaching in with a small hand, small hand shovel, or a shop vac vacuum and removing the accumulated debris. Other than that, just keep the drain free of leaves and other obstructions and it will work well for years and years to come. We don't see any issues with this drain style in our area. Let us know if you have any more questions!

I have a stair drain. The drain cover has holes to let water through but in heavy rain, It backs up somehow. Then I can hear a puddle form. Next thing you know, I see water coming through the basement door. I’m wondering if the original drain cover is restrictive? I keep the area clean.

I’m sorry to hear you have had issues with your drain. It could be a number of issues and there could be many solutions. I’d recommend taking the cover off to see how the drain was built. If it is similar to the ones in this video, try cleaning out the container area. After many years you may have dirt that accumulated and is hindering the percolation rate of the drain system. Let me know if this helps you. I’d like to hear back!

I’m glad to hear it did not flood. Ideally you should have 16-24” of depth before there is any gravel. Dirt would not be good to have there as it does not allow the water to drain well enough. If you can fit your hand down the drain and clear out the dirt that would be ideal.

@@DansieDesignBuild I underestimated the size of the drain hole. I can’t fit my hand down there. I was able to take a flat edge screwdriver to loosen the dirt some but it feels like fine gravel to me. I got me a garden hose to do a flush and it’s going down slowly. It looks like there is no pipe system in place. The walks looks like it settles in the ground.

I dig down about 2.5’ lower than where the top of the finished concrete will be. That gives enough room for the gravel and the container. I don’t know if you’re in Utah, but with our dry soils this is a good drain set up.
