How barriers on a bike path can cause a crash

Anyone who has ever done a group ride would know how much of a threat bollards and barriers on bike paths are to life and limb. A prime task of the rider on the front is to call them out to riders further back. Clipping a bollard never ends well.
On Saturday, I rode down the Cooks River to the airport. There's a lot of bollards on that path. Near the Kyeemagh gardens, I spotted a small gaggle of people standing around with one person lying on the ground. It was reasonably warm, and I'd saw a few people lying in the shade that day. As I went past, I noticed he wasn't covered in sweat - he was covered in blood. I did a U turn and asked if any help was required, but they said an ambulance was on the way and they had it under control.
By the time I reached my turnaround point and returned, the ambulance had arrived. The poor bloke was moaning and clearly in a lot of pain.
This is the sort of thing that won't ever been seen by those responsible for installing the barriers outside the Drummoyne swimming pool. They'll be safe at home, declaring it's not their fault and they couldn't have foreseen such a thing occurring.
Well, this sort of thing does happen. Actions have consequences. Stupid designs lead to terrible outcomes.
I'm tempted to attend a Canada Bay Council meeting and request that as a safety measure, we start installing power poles in the middle of the road.

The pole is painted bright yellow and clearly visible. He was just cycling too fast to avoid it.But what is the point of having it there?

It was at the end of a road, it’s to prevent people from driving past that point, just imagine someone thinking they are on the road and end up mowing down everyone walking there at 60 miles an hour.

All the bollards have been removed from cycle paths in my city, here in the uk. After one caused a fatal accident with an elderly gentleman riding with a group of other cyclists. Placing them in the centre of a cycle lane is a killer.

Yeah, the advice from the local government association is to remove them - but that takes time and money, and many councils don't seem to want to bother finding either.

My sister in law hit one of these. She so damaged her knee that she has never been able to ride a bike again. On some other paths they have used chicanes. Hard enough for a normal bike but impassable for us on our tandem. Another uses gates which I can navigate having a stand on my bike. Those with road bikes struggle to cope with the spring loaded gate. We know why the barriers are needed but no one has yet come up with a great but safe design. We have spent a lot of money removing things like bridge supports in roads because no matter how visible they are made people still hit them. Why would bikes be magically different?

Well, I've seen much worse. Here in Scotland land there is an old railway line transformed into a cycle path, but they probably didn't want motorbikes on it so they installed bicycle dismount "gates" that are so narrow that you have to dismount and have one pedal up and the other down to fit the bike through without lifting it, and even then, you have to be careful. I nearly damaged my derailleur on it. What makes me angry though isn't so much that I have to dismount but that the cycle path is made inaccessible not only to motorbikes, but also to wheelchairs, bicycle karts, karts for babies, etc., all because of this stupidity in the middle of nowhere.

@@dmitryk7320 There isn't a solution for everything, but considering how closed off this particular railway line is, it shouldn't be a problem for the police to just wait for them on both ends. The bikers would also likely be locals, so it shouldn't be difficult to figure out who that is.

As a former cyclist (decades ago), I can understand the principle of the barriers to prevent ATV's and dirt bikes from using the path, but they should be taller for better visibility.

Around here we have trails with maze barriers that you can barely ride through. I've almost knocked myself down a few times catching a bar end on one, and I've seen other riders go down due to them. I guess they're meant to keep dirt bikes and ATVs off the trail.

It should be pretty obvious to the council, that many cyclists have poor eyesight. If they're unable to see and abide by a red traffic stop light, then what hope have they of seeing a vertical, bright yellow pole in the middle of the pathway.

If you hit a speed bump or other traffic calming device while driving too fast it's dangerous too. As long as you're riding in a safe and reasonable manner I can't see how the large barriers pose any potential danger. I think it'd be much easier to hit or get hit by a car that isn't as tall, bright, or reflective and instead of being stationary pops up suddenly from out of view and is driving across the bike lanes. The smaller bollard is harder to see force sure though perhaps they could put some signs or something on it.

@@robbiddlecombe8392 well you can't fix that kind of stupid, but you can keep it from impacting others or allowing people to seriously injure themselves. I guess you could put pads on the devices but at that point I'd start to wonder if the expense is actually worth it. I'd much rather see someone walk in to a sign than a moving car.

it's not just a bike path though, the signage says it's a shared path. if it was just a bike path i'd agree, but if you can cycle right into a bright yellow pole then I argue you're not cycling attentively enough for a space you're sharing with kids, babies in prams, pets etc.

"How barriers on a bike path can cause a crash." Disagree, the crash is caused by riders who are lacking in awareness. If you hit a brightly coloured tall and wide pole, you shouldn't be in control of a fast moving vehicle that can hurt you or others when you fail to notice your surroundings.

@@baybugcanadabaybicycleuser915 Logically, yes. The bulk of accidents when operating a vehicle, is human negligence. I think there's many reasons - fatigue, being on autpilot, inexperience, doing things beyond safe parameters, etc. If your bike is in good condition, it didn't suddenly fail, the surface is optimal, the tall, wide, brightly coloured post was not obscured by anything, and nothing forced you against your will...and you hit it...then grow up, take responsibility for yourself and your actions, learn from your errors, and stop blaming externals for your accident.
