How BAD is Gas Mileage on a 500HP V12 Twin Turbo S600 Mercedes (it weighs 5000 lbs!)
I took a road trip in the V12 Twin Turbo Mercedes Benz S600 to find out whether or not I could break the low-teens MPG number I've been getting since owning the car. Here's what happened...

If you want to play, you gotta pay.
If you can afford the car you don't worry about the gas
In the city my 2007 S550 gets about the same MPG. Though, on the highway I get about 24 mpg. Which is great for a 382 hp 4400 pound car. It’s also really really fast for it’s size. Flooring it at 30 mph throws you in the seat like a muscle car, I couldn’t imagine the 600. I really want one as my next car. Also, they do still make the ABC suspension, it’s called Magic Body Control now because it leans the car against the corners.
That sounds about right. I got 21mpg on the highway with mine. Totally right about the maintenance too. My experience after driving 23,000 miles (46,000 total on the car), has been that I never drive further than about a 50 mile radius from my dealership. So not much fun really. From one owner to another, be ready for the coolant o-rings at the turbos to start leaking (44,000 miles). That job isn't really a DIY since the whole drivetrain needs to come out of the car. My indie charged $3800 which was a great price since the dealer price was $12k-$15k. While he was in there, we changed the motor mounts too. One was compressed, so it was a good idea to change them both. The ABC system threw a pulsation damper at 36,000 miles and just blew the replacement at 46,000 miles which is what is expected with the pulsation dampers by what the dealer tells me. The power steering hose blew at 45,900 miles which was way overdo based on what the dealer said. Now, the transmission goes into limp in mode after driving on the highway. I'm told that is the transmission conductor plate - also told by the dealer that these go out all the time and I was lucky to still have the original. Basically, this has the reliability of a very high-strung supercar (or maybe a little worse :) )

@@Foxtrot1967 You don't give a car 493hp and 590lb-ft of torque and expect people not to use it. These things are surprisingly tolerant of immature driving. The things that break (lots of things on these) will break no matter how they are driven. Or parked for that matter.

It's impressive how some V12's can use not much more fuel than a 4 pot 1/3 their size. Many people with an XJS V12 which was either 5.3 or 6.0 liters can get well over 20mpg at full cruising speeds.
I am sorry to say this and i mean no disrespect to the USA, but in Australia those blown down trees and palms would have been cut up and taken away by the local council and volunteers in the first week after the storm, I think the local council needs a kick up the behind to get in and do their job and clean the streets.

I know it's an apples to oranges comparison... But, I've owned a couple 6.0 Ford diesels. This is largely a pre-emissions truck and it tips the scale at 8,800 lbs with all my gear. At sea level I've managed 24.7 MPG at 73 MPH on cruise control. On the flip side, if I advance the timing and floor it every light, I've managed 4 MPG... 4. Not a typo. I tend to average about 21.5 MPG with the same cruise control method and speed here in Colorado - Only difference was atmospheric pressure. Take note that on a Mustang Dyno in Georgia (Not at altitude) it put down 492HP and 977 LBFT of torque at the wheels. You throw gas mileage out the window when achieving these numbers however. Lastly, all these number where achieved on all Terrain 35x12.5 tires with a 2 inch leveling kit.
It is no prius😲
I have a 2003 CL600 TT. I have the Pressertech stage II up grage. I get 21-23 mpg on highway
Low tire pressure
My 2008 cayenne turbo (4.8 twin turbo 500hp) does really good on road trips, around 13l/100km (18mpg) at 120km/h In the citiy you get less than 10
There’s a lot of people that will state maintenance will kill you. Honestly I’ve had mine for 8 years. It has over 200k miles. Engine wise, besides oil changes the only thing I had to do was change coil packs and spark plugs and I did that as preventative. Car was still running perfect when I did it. In a way I kind of welcome people to discourage others from buying them cause it allows me to scoop em up.
Dude. 1- I thought I saw you around my area! 2- You should have got off on exit 116, there's still FEET of water in places. Pine Ridge road ain't nothing
They didn't get rid of the ABC suspension. It's just called "Magic Body Control", and it's pretty magical
Damn, I get 21 mpg in my stage 2 Outback XT. 20.3 mpg is pretty damn good for a v12.
I have a 2004 V12 760 BMW. My consumption is exactly the same as yours. (after the correct conversions) I was lucky enough to get one with a life time warranty. I pay so much every month. So far after 6 years it had required a huge amount of repairs. It has spent over a year at the dealership total time. To be fair on the car most of the repairs have been misdiagnosed part replacement. Always due to BMW not having their fault database perfected. The dumbing down of the diagnostic process does not work at all well for the uncommon models. Like your Merc the BM is fantastic to drive, in fact the extra fuel use compared with a sensible car actully feels like money well spent.
_Knock on wood grain_ :D
I just have to say: Those on-board fuel consumption are always a little off. The only way to measure your consumption in a good way is at the gas station, with the tyre profile that the OEM recommends. You have to fill up your gas tank until the pistol stops filling. Make your journey. Return to the gas station, and fill your gas tank again to the fullest, until the pistol stops pumping. Now, see how many gallons you have pumped, and see how many miles you have made on your car. Then, make your calculations.
The maintenance is a killer on a BMW also unless you DIY. Your MPG is amazing for a v12. Nice vid.
Samcrac lives on my exit in Tampa. Its a dream come true
My 2003 S430 averages 23MPG and who knows if the spark plugs have ever been done. The plugs are on hold since the car was wrecked.

What a beautiful car, I see very few of these V12 Mercs about in the UK as the petrol is the equivalent of $7.90 for a UK gallon they're hard on the wallet.
Check the battery ? Tyre pressure ? Spark plugs ? Decent oil ?.. Weak battery or worn brushes in alternator seemed to make the mpg bad in my Merc.. Also some petrol stations fuel such as shell or bp super unleaded give much better mpg and power. They also clean the injectors and sensors in the exhaust which effects mpg.. Failing that maybe stick a load of helium balloons in the car to make it lighter :)
My Mk2 RS is doing well if it gets 24mpg...but it’s a 2nd car running just over 400bhp, so fuel mileage isn’t important. Had numerous TVRs (British sports cars..Google if you don’t know them), and some of those averaged single figures :)
i still want one.
imagine that gas mileage over here in the uk at 8 dollars a gallon!

Wow, this car actually gets better gas mileage than my dad's CLS63 AMG with its 6.2L engine (12 city, 18 highway for that car). (Also, my 205hp V6 SUV gets 17mpg highway)

arcy131 it is a bit depressing, I have an e class and get 14-15 around town. I can get about 26 on the highway but I don't do a ton of highway driving. I have have the engine and probably less that half the hp and only get slightly better mileage than a v12.

arcy131 that's rough. I don't drive that much, I've been spending about 40 bucks a week. I'd rather it be better but I can deal with it considering it's paid for. Is yours a 4matic? Mine is which probably doesn't do any good for fuel mileage.

My 1992 190E 2.6 with 217k miles has averaged 20.8 MPG (50/50 split between highway and slogging through rush hour Philadelphia traffic) over the last 87 fill ups. I don't drive like an old person and I also imagine your C-Class is much newer and less like a brick on wheels than mine, so I don't understand how your getting awful fuel economy.
Is the mpg the car gives you accurate? In my experience they are usually 1-2 mpg off.
Okay, let's look at a 2015 S class. 60000.00 and 900-1100 a month plus insurance and gas. Now a 2007-07 S600 at 25000.00 and a payment of 470.00 plus insurance and gas. A newer 2015 with half the amenities where the S600 has everything. Look at the maintenance on both you will come to the same conclusion I did. It's better to have the 2007 S 600. Cost 145000.00 over the 2015 cost 96000.00 car. Oh and buying used most 2015 have 45-60 K miles while 2007 are about 45-50 miles. I'd rather have the old school with night view and not look like everybody else. I didn't grow up with a silver spoon, But in my lifetime wouldn't mind having the 2007-08 loaded at 60 years old than a Honda. 11/28/18 What a road car plus your passengers can kick in gas money. Lol

Depends if they had comprehensive insurance coverage (and not just liability coverage). The cars with comprehensive insurance will get totaled & sent to auction. The majority of the cars however did not have comprehensive insurance and they will either end up TRYING to get repaired by the owner or sold to the local junk yard. Spend some time and read up on what happened to all the vehicles that got flooded during Superstorm Sandy - the flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey and Irma is going to make the vehicle losses in Sandy seem minor.

John Gregornik you are absolutely right - and these flooded cars are going to show up through out the USA (both at auctions and on used car lots, even in private seller listings like eBay and Craigslist). So do not think that just because the cars get flooded in Texas or Florida, that they will not show up in Washington State or similar totally unsuspecting local that is not known for large quantities of flooded cars. Inspecting these cars for ANY signs of water intrusion is going to be critical - the sellers will try to conceal the damage the best they can, but tell-tale signs will always remain.

Start with Ebay and www.car-part.com - they will give you an idea of price for used parts and if they even have your specific color available (remember that even though it may be same model year and paint code, the color may not match perfectly due to environmental factors). Also check into paintless dent repair in your area - they can work magic with body damage that to the average person would seem like parts had to be replaced (it all depends on the severity of damage)
