He was also a genuinely badass warrior. His antics even during fights cause this to be overlooked, but if you think about it he's out there beating the crap out of entire groups of elite soldiers as a young teen and even engaging top-notch benders and not simply getting stomped unless they're special. He probably was literally one of the best warriors of his time even as a teen and as a young boy, he took up the role of every man in his village and, judging from the fact they didn't starve and everything was maintained, he _succeeded._
I also like how he doesn't always get special treatment. Jeong Jeong straight up tells him that he's not ready, and to buzz off. Pakku doesn't allow him to procrastinate and tells him that he'll see him at sunrise. Even Bumi, though he means well, proceeds to kick his ass when they first meet. Aang gets thrown in the big league directly, and has to earn his place every step of the way.
A few points you didn't bring up that I feel are worth mentioning; Aang doesn't just HAVE all 4 elements; he has to train and master EACH ONE first, then master his mind and soul to access the avatar state on command. He has to put in the hard work before his natural talent will bear fruit. Secondly, when he is strongest, he is weakest; in the avatar state he can still be killed, and if he is, the chain of reincarnation severs.

Azula proved that second one so true. Being permanently in the Avatar State (at his most powerful) is NOT a good idea, and this is a perfect way to balance out an Avatar's OP nature; no Avatar worth their salt would choose to permanently be in the Avatar State unless absolutely necessary due to that major risk factor.

Yeah, the Avatar is the ultimate Generalist, an excellent swiss army knife of an OP character but the specialists remain relevant due to their hyperfocus on the one element and its ultimate form. To me, the Avatar is a Jack-of-all-trades. He or she has the ability to learn all the elements and their sub-categories if they choose to learn them. But while they spend their time mastering all the elements, there are people in the world min-maxing their abilities. Amon, Korra's uncle, the Red Lotus, and Kuvira all manhandled Korra multiple times before losing. The one I want to focus on is Kuvira. She didn't have any energy-bending (Amon), nor did she have immense knowledge of spirits or a deeper understanding of her element. No, she had a standard level of training in earth/metal bending. With just ordinary bending abilities with no power-ups or aces up her sleeve, she fought Korra (the most talented avatar, ep 1 showed her bending three elements with no training.) to a stand still.

I think what makes Aang a compelling protagonist as a “chosen one” is that in his lead up to the fight with Ozai, he doesn’t struggle with the thought of defeating him, he struggles with going against his own ingrained value that all life is sacred and that no one has a right to take a life. He also is a 12 year old boy who is the central figure in a conflict that for the fate of the world. @@anjaneyasreetrout2444 Look, the ending WAS rushed. However, everything was setup during the show, it wasn't an "asspull." First. We know you can bend more than "just the four elements." This is shown in different ways. Second. "Energy of the body" is introduced to explain lightning redirection. It's assumed from then on that all benders are using their "chi" to bend. This can be proven by blocking "chakra points" as Ty Lee does. Third. Aang has always had a force from the spirt world drawing on him. Even as a child, he naturally picked the toys of previous avatars. It was easy for him to be led to the Lionturtle, which is ancient and highly connected to the spirt world. Fourth. The Lionturtle knowing about bending energy follows in line with other animals being the first to bend the elements. The Lionturtle is millennia older, and has had that time to draw on new understandings. Finally. When Aang applied his will over Ozai, we were given a representation of the battle of their wills through the light surrounding them. Ozai is a very willful person, and he would drive forth towards his goal without stop. Aang has had reservations, and seems meek in comparison. However, Aang resolved himself to stopping Ozai while not killing him, no matter what. Aang was told by previous avatars and his own friends that he needed to kill Ozai. Still, even when it seemed like the whole world expected him to break his vow of nonviolence, Aang kept searching for a peaceful way. Aang had ALL the power needed to kill Ozai without much thought. Everything Aang turned to told him to kill Ozai. Aang choose peace. Aang's will to accomplish his goal through nonviolence was far greater than the power-hungry quest Ozai willed himself upon. Wasn't an "asspull" at all.

There is also the fact that aang being op is also due to him having to learn different styles of bending which he can then bend together. I recall in the drill and correct me if I'm wrong but when he moved one of the rocks to make the spike I saw it as a mix of air bending and earthbending. Even that fusing was kinda already shown before as something he can do: during the Winter Solstice in episode 8, Roku took over Aang's body entirely. It's not that much of a stretch to go from that to a powerful ocean spirit doing the same thing out of anger and hatred. Plus the show had established multiple times that the Avatar is the bridge between the Spirit World and the human world. Again it makes sense that he can serve as a conduit to an ancient spirit due to this in-between nature of his. So yeah I love that even though we do sometimes see things that may seem like it came out of nowhere they actually don't and make sense with the world they've established 😁

In his prime he can probably fight most non master benders too considering he spent a year seeing all kinds of bending and how it works with *three* masters alongside him! Four if you count Zuko since he did have to fight him too.

I know people love to hate on Korra, but Aang never had to go through nearly as much trauma and hamulation as that poor girl did.

It's yet another balancing act for the OP Chosen One. Yes, the Avatar often has a hard time learning the element opposite to their nature. Aang was so free flowing and very much not rigid that Earth didn't come naturally to him. Meanwhile for Korra she was as exact of an opposite that you can get to a relaxed, free-flowing Airbender, and, thus, Air didn't come naturally to her either. I'd say she struggled more with it than Aang did with Earthbending
I like how Korra genuinely struggles with her fights because she is in a world where new innovations are made on the regular. Most avatars had people using techniques and technology from centuries back and while aang also faced similar adversity to korra it wasn't to the same degree. both aang and korra are amazing avatars and have shown how being able to do everything doesn't mean you are without weakness
@santosic
Жыл бұрын
Korra actually highlights his point about just because you are the Avatar and can learn all of the bending, doesn't mean others can't be stronger. Amon for instance was a water bender just like her and he was master at it, so much so it surpassed her own skill. Hell Yakone surpassed Aang too. It's kinda cool to see that honestly. Just because they can be OP doesn't mean they always are, you know?
The bending rant is the same logic for MMA fighters. MMA masters are also called “master of none” which means they may learn many styles but because they draw from different and at times opposing styles, they can never completely master any of the individual styles. However a “master of one” who fully masters a single style has the ability and the necessity to become flexible and apply their one style in different ways to make it effective. I believe that since Bending is basically magic martial arts that the logic carries over.
I love seeing the old school content come back. Nux's new stuff is fun to watch too but this is why I started following him in the first place.
We don't get to see Bumi enough in the story to warrant an OP done right imo but I think Bumi is such a badass. IIrc I think Nux forgot that the avatar state gives you the bending knowledge of all the previous avatars I mean kiyoshi literally split a continent, don't think anyone even toph is getting close to that. But still great vid.
It's also worth mentioning that what the Avatar typically struggles with based on the past Avatars and the ones we watch is complex relational/political issues between nations or between the human world and the spirit world. Having all the power in the world may help you defeat a tyrant but you still have to clean up the rest of the tyranny left in their place and help orient the people in a better direction, which bending can't help very much.
I would love for him to talk about how right they did Zuko's entire story & character development
I really love that you've brought these types of videos back and I hope you do more on avatar
One thing I like about how they handled the overpowered trope in Avatar is that, whilst the avatar is op in combat, other characters are great in their own ways, like how Sokka is a master tactician; things like this create great character dynamics.
I know that it’s not the most popular character, but I think a “Nobody Understands Korra” would do great because well…they don’t. Be a great way to provide a fair analysis of the character (with her flaws, which actually makes a better character), and can go easily with a “Nobody Understands Aang” video that highlights how the 2 Avatars serve as perfect vehicles for the stories their respective series are trying to tell.

Another great thing about this show that I’ve seen before is that, despite how powerful benders can be, it doesn’t usually make non benders feel obsolete. As the only nonbender in the Gaang, Sokka isn’t exactly the number one fighter in the group, despite wielding his legendary boomerang. However, instead of just being some useless comedy relief, he finds other ways to contribute, like using his smarts to come up with plans or get the gaang out of a bad situation (like that episode in season one where he provokes the pirates and Zuko’s men to fight over Aang to make it easier to escape). We also see examples of non benders who are very competent fighters, like Suki, Zuko with his swords (not a non bender, but he’s not bending, so I think it counts), Jet, and Tai Lee and Mae. All of these characters show that they can hold their own in a fight against benders, and a character like Tai Lee is even able to disrupt a person’s ability to bend.

Another great point for the Avatar: there was no "tapping into true power whenever plot demands it" for Aang, he EARNED his powers through long and difficult trial and error and it payed off in the end, his "chosen one" trope served it's purpose for one specific goal and the world of Avatar is well-rounded so power-creeps can't and won't happen
I clicked on this video bc it looked like a Game Theory thumbnail, and I didn't expect such an in-depth analysis of such a niche topic
And to make even more sense with the powerscaling in avatar. Its not only the avatar that is powered up by other elements, its that anyone can be powered up by it. Iroh told Zuko, that even he can learn from them. Iroh developed a defensive method by studying waterbending, which is the polar opposite of firebending, but it still told him new ways to use bending. Zuko shows this in his first meeting with azula in ba sing se. He conjures fire with the motions of water bending to mend his fire in a more fluent way of defense and offense, instead of pure offense that all firebenders use their elements. So its not the 4 elements in their base form powering up the avatar, but to balance out the avatar in all aspects that is needed. Taking Aang theough his whole Adventure: Aang starts with Air -> his fighting involved speed that he used to avoid conflict. His personality being honed on the aspect of air nomads being free roaming and avoiding conflict. As Bomi challenged Aang in thinking differently, he noticed how "avoiding conflict" may not be a mindset he should strife to hold forever. When learning water bending, he lesrned the shifting of offense and defense. He was still avoiding confrontations but retaliated the attacks with conter moves. His personality had to be honed to even be able to do this and he was now taking things more seriously. When starting fire bending too esrly, he lscked disziplin and grounding, which were not key aspects of Air- nor Waterbending. Thats why his "freedom" showed the destructive power of fire being easy to misuse and hard to master. Esrth bending took Aang much more work, as Earth is the concept of facing a problem head-on. Meaning he needs firm resolution and determination. This is reflected in all his fighting after he learned esrth. He usually was a speedster but after that, went to be a more stand your ground type of fighter, blocking and dealing more direct strikes. Personality reflected the stance change when he was attacking the whole earth kingdom direktly through the front door. The next time he truely tried firebending, it went much smoother, cause his new mindset allowed him to be more agressiv, defensive, free and fluent, which are all aspects of fire bending to a peak. All characters in the avatar group developed new fighting skills and habits THROUGH being with the other elemental masters. It was never realy spoken ojt loud, but their personalities and fighting skills changed every time they had new people in their group. Whish is the whole concept of the avatar powerscaling. Not the avatar is the one powering up, everyone is by learning through others what they are lacking and developing together. The core concept of "working together" and "my friends are my power". Aang would never have come close in being this powerful if he had just learned bending through standard benders shoeing him the basics. It the Adventure and change of mindset to be a well-rounded fighter WITH all elements usable giving him a higher range of abilities. Korra shows this perfectly, as she learned 3 of the 4 elements by being trained in a secluded area by generic masters. She had to struggle through all her adventure to even make a dent as strong as Aang, cause she lacked basically every key trait of the elemental bendkng methods except waterbending (defense/offense) and slight fire bending (agression) and minimal earth bending (standing her ground). Her fighting skills resembeling direkt strikes with little variety, cause she lacked imagination, freedom and a huge aspect of experience through the interaction with the world and fackng it together with others.
Naruto spent the whole month before the finals training to be able to use the Fox’s chakra. That’s literally his hard work paying off.
Man I really missed these classic nux videos.
Bruh Nux I miss these videos. Glad to see you're doing these again
I know this is a little out of your wheelhouse but I think you would love the wheel of time.
So glad you're doing these types of videos again
Credit where credit is due, it’s been hammered into us over and over that Kurama’s chakra is exceedingly hard to control
I haven’t watched Nux in a long long time but I will not mind coming back for more Avatar content
bro i watched these kind of videos on nux taku then you started posting wild ass videos. this is much, much better
Because even with the power of the avatar inside him, aang himself still needed training. Its like the most powerful weapon in the world being in the hands of a child. The weapon is there but the child still needs to learn when, where, why, and how to use it.
If you haven't seen hellofutureme's videos on the avatar series you're missing out on incredible analysis of this beautiful series
Basically, if you wanna make your main character be overpowered you gotta make other characters overpowered in other ways. Balance is 🔑
He’s finally going back to analysis
Other anime: Oh no the chosen one has gone mad! Guess we'll die. Avatar: oh no the chosen one has gone mad! Time to gather the four strongest benders of each element and take him down.
Great video! Also that one meme on 01:03 made me laugh x) Really curious what you would make of Ichigo from Bleach as overpowered character and the ways he fits and doesn't fit in the chosen one trope!
I love these type of videos and I love Avatar, so please more like that 👍
2:50 a big part of narutos is that when he talk no jutsu someone and it works is because their argument is flawed, usual the flaw is that its hypocritical, and naruto tends to suffer from the same flaw over and over but overcomes it to be able to beat whoever he is fighting, but the naruto vs neji fight is one of the few times where that did happen lol
It's nice to have you back nux
I really enjoyed this more serious take you put on this video… maybe make a few more like it moving forward daddy Nux
NUX TALKING ABOUT A CARTOON FROM MY CHILDHOOD THIS MADE MY DAY PLUS HE ALWAYS TALKS ABOUT RICK AND MORTY ALL THE TIME HAHA
People always bring up that Naruto vs. Neji fight but never bring up the fact that Naruto had to train for 21 Days straight from Sunrise to Sunset to control the 9 Tails Chakra. They also forget that he was so exhausted after completing his training that he slept for 3 Straight Days
A bit of a different selection but I think "The Warrior Of Light" from Final Fantasy 14 is a perfectly done chosen one character as well.
Most chosen ones are destined for greatness or victory, but not the Avatar. It’s their job to unite the nations, but that doesn’t mean they’d succeed. An Avatar can be overpowered but can still fail and/or die and that’s why I believe this series is overpowered done right
One of the biggest things making Avatar the last Airbender great is that it is limited. It has clear cut goals, which are worked towards. it's not one of those shows that run for an eternity with 10-50 seasons. Four books, that's it. And they nailed every single one.
“You can’t bend air because it is a gas” 🤓
Yeaaas Nux is doing great with these videos!
This was so soooooo good, the man did it
3:34 All he needs is Heart & he'd be able to summon Captain Planet!
Literally the only vtuber I can stand. Your avatar (no pun intended) is very expressive and looks nice. But more importantly, you are entertaining through your voice alone.
Hey, love the content. I found you from the Toph OP done right vid.
the mew analogy was actually perfect
Loving this series!
"Iroh, whom I would simp for, for ETERNITY!" HELL YESH!
I love how you kept on talking about the force like this was Star Wars
I believe the avatar is capable of mastering these s tier bending styles. Like how korra learned metal bending.
Thank you for this video. I remember feeling this way about Vegeta and Goku and the DbZ fighters I felt they didn't use
i love seeing old nux
"Iroh, who I will simp for eternity" Agreed
“Stop wars, and start diarrhea” 😂
It’s been a long time since I watched you and this video makes me forget why and reminds me why I started watching you in the first place.
