Habibie, the guy who just replaced soeharto was soeharto right hand. the decision looks bad today because Indonesia successfully getting rid of it's centralization dictatorship and decentralize, while timor leste failed to made a prosper government. but back at the time, independence wasn't look like bad choice. if independence vote happen say in 2004, things would've been much different. the fact that aceh can successfully gain lot special autonomy in 2004 would be unthinkable to happen in 1999.

Speaking from the perspective of an australian, I would be very interested to learn more about my country's history with violating everything from international law to basic ethics. East Timor is the case we sort of know about. But I've heard for instance that our constitution was unconstitutionally changed one time. I think any changes require a nation-wide vote of some sort and the change occurred without reaching that point. Also, Its less of an international case, but our politicians seem to have taken advantage of decades of apathy and treat their jobs like an entitlement rather than any responsibility. Insider Trading is an issue, bullying and attempting to imprison critics with verifiably false claims has occurred. Recently the Deputy Premier of NSW stepped down and in his resignation speech actually said it was because one of those critics he had filed false reports to domestic terrorist units about. The country is a mess. The land is blessed to have lasted this long with this much wilful incompetence and crime.

I am Indonesian, and I remember saw this on the news. I remember how Australia shamelessly saying they will give their full support to Timor Leste, and how they will become a good neighbor and no need to be afraid to Indonesia since they will back up Timor Leste. I also remember how Timor Leste representative said they will become successful after becoming independent from Indonesia. People already long expect it, Timor Leste won't last long. Nation with one income won't last very long esp natural resources can run out. I am not saying Indonesian govt are right after the massacre they did, but they should've accept the special administrative region from govt. Special administrative region means it is almost a country within a country. Now I am interested with Bougainville. Will it repeat Timor Leste tragedy? Will Australia get what they want again? We can only wait and see

As an Australian, I'm extremely angry and ashamed at how greedy, underhanded and scummy my country behaved when it came to East Timor. The more you read about it the worst it gets. When the spying scandal leaked, ASIO, our equivalent of the FBI, raided the home and office of East Timor's lawyer and the whistle blower, the latter of whom is being prosecuted and has had their passport confiscated, so they can't appear as a witness in the Hague. The foreign minister at the time, Alexander Downer, just so happened to get a nice consultant job for Woodside Energy, one of the companies that profited from Australia bullying East Timor out of its oil. And people ask what we need guillotines for.

Not sure if E Timor would be better off as a province of Indonesia than being independent. The country that over-relied on oil and became bankrupt is Venezuela. Government officials are too shortsighted to see that the oil boom would last forever and relied on just 1 industry to provide jobs. There must be other resources the country can tap into or build new industries like manufacturing when the oil boom is going to provide jobs after the oil price collapsed. A country like Japan with no oil has enough brains to dominate the car & electronics industries after the war.

And remembering that Indonesia is made of multi languages, multi races, this (Timor Leste) can be a lesson for other regions that want to gain independence. You know what, Indonesia is stronger if we (all indonesian provinces) are together, to become respected at the world stage we have to be a big country, and Indonesia has it, because we're together, together stronger. ~ God created Timor Leste to protect Indonesia. And I thank the rebel province Timor Leste for having giving us a very precious lesson from your failure, and this makes Indonesia stronger. Australia lusts East Timor's oil. And to make things worst East Timor is a very poor country. How a rich country like Australia can act like a very fair and decent country in the face of the world baffles me when I learned it. I've been to the Bayu Undan gas field years back to attend a main engine problem of a supply vessel with service contract to a rig company manned by mostly Australians. The oil field is closer to the East Timor shore than Australia is by lot but the oil is being pumped out of the well all the way to Darwin for processing and refinery. Good thing there was a treaty now signed by both countries regarding the issue fought very hard by the Timorese giving a just compensation to what is due them.
