All the tiger economies in that time were heavily dependent on foreign investment, so much so, that it was cheaper to buy from foreign entities and banks than the domestic institutions. When the interest rates were raised by Fed, the cost of borrowing became significantly higher which affected the operating costs of all businesses in South Asian countries who had pegged their currency with the USD. This affected their exports and many businesses had to be shut.
