How ASAP Mob Failed to Reach Their Full Potential

Ойын-сауық

Rocky’s debut mixtape Live.Love.ASAP set the benchmark for the crew and the vicelike grip that they held on pop culture at their peak. Yet in the years that have followed, many of ASAP Mob’s lesser members may have fallen out of the cultural microscope. And, in many ways, they’ve arguably deviated from the initial goal that was set out by Yams himself, resembling less of a celebrated dynasty and more of a disjointed mishmash of artists experiencing varying levels of success.

I remember when they were coming up and it was due to their aesthetic + ASAP Rocky’s Peso. They blew up thanks to tumblr. 2011-2013 you would find pictures of them all over the blogging site. They changed street fashion by mixing designer labels and every hype beast tried to dress like them. I thought that they would be huge but to me it seems as if they’ve always cared more about fashion and aesthetic than music. ASAP rocky’s debut is pretty legendary though and his and Ferg’s era were just before “mumble” rap which is why they will always be respected in hip hop. But I always felt that ASAP Rocky could have been wayyy bigger music wise if he focused more on music and being an artist.

b b rocky probably had one of the best debuts of all time highkey, like as far as getting his aesthetic and sound right straight out the gate. I feel like a lot of outside entities whether it be rappers or brands were able to go farther with what they’re platform was meant to do for themselves, and the vision was never fully realized as a result

  • @dioscine5309

def thought rocky was gonna be way bigger. the sound changed too as they were getting they’re footing like 2012-2014/15. like tumblr/cloud rap served as the precursor to soundcloud/mumble rap. The music got stuck in a weird space.

People calling them overhyped are the same people who can probably only name "Fuckin Problems" if you press them about it. I don't think the crew itself ever tried to make itself more than it was. If anything, I think the death of YAM$ knocked the mob (and the NY Beast Coast movement as a whole) off course. YAM$ was a real hood mogul and united the music scene in a way we never saw before and might never see again.

The west coast had fell off too in the 2000's... But then Kendrick, YG, Nipsey, Shoreline Mafia, ScHoolboy Q etc all brought back that g funk sound and then you had cats like Odd Future (who literally birthed Earl, Tyler, and Frank). Not to mention how popular the south is. Tbh even the drill shit is just jacked from Chicago lmfao. NY so lame they gotta jump on everyones trend cause the music they got famous for in the 90's (boom bap) aged like dog shit. Where as G-funk for the West Coast and Trap for the south aged amazingly and has lasted for decades.

I knew that the A$AP Mob as a whole was steeped in mediocrity after listening to Lord$ Never Worry in 2012. Keep in mind that this was when Yams was still alive and involved. From the beginning it was quite clear that Rocky and Ferg were the stars, and that the other peripheral members were along for the ride. I remember hearing interviews where there was a rollout plan. Rocky first, then Ferg would come with his album, then Nast, Twelvyy, and so on. "Trillmatic" was the last remnant we'd get of that rollout. Yams passed away, and there was soon no direction for this group that had members who already had been complacent and simply not on the level of a Rocky or a Ferg. Rocky is enigmatic and varied in his pursuits; he's firmly earned his place. Ferg is also very consistent in his music and image and has never closely relied on the Mob to put out great music, with songs like "New Level," "Plain Jane" and "Floor Seats." You can be in the company of greatness, but ultimately you have to pull your own weight.

I feel like the problem is the old groups have set a bar way to high to be met. Probably why the new groups now a days are considered overrated to music critics. That bar will take decades to be met. However back in day we needed to be “perfect” in order to be recognized, while in todays world that is not much necessary. Also, in today’s world, the bars that have to be met are lower than the ones that were set years ago. Years ago people were doing music to express themselves and leave hunger versus today people only make music to be famous and rich. This is why we see a lot of artists that get really hyped up with one song and after that song “expires” the artist is forgotten by most. Edit: grammar

Yall fail to recognize the fact that each ASAP member has gone on to establish their own stable hustle. YG Addie has his Marino Infantry brand, Twelvyy has LYBB, Nast has been making crazy collabs with brands such as Converse etc and is popular member in the fashion scene. Just cause the music wasn't up to people's standards... Doesn't mean that their portfolio doesn't speak for them.
