How are trees big?

A few months ago I was looking at the trees in my backyard and marveling at their size. Then it suddenly dawned on me. Where does all the stuff that makes a tree come from? I was surprised at what I didn’t really understand until that day.

There is a tiny error: trees do not break CO2, but water. The oxygen they produce (the first pollutant that caused the extinction of many lifeforms... seriously) comes from water, not from carbon dioxide. Said that, yeah, it is pretty amazing that tree can grow so much from just air, water and light.
