It makes sense that, to a Ninja, a successful flight would be a victory. The Ninja escapes with his life, his knowledge, and one more chance to apply his skills.

Even the modern day Samurai cannot ignore the modern day Ninja. This will be cool to watch on top of the other great content Shogo provides.

The thing is that theres no person difference between ninja and samurai because they were samurai or ashigaru that were specialized in spying. Also they didnt wear black uniform (thats just silly why would you wear something that everyone could recognize you are spy?). There were no ninja villages nor clans. Iga and Koka were poor samurai clans that were specialized in espionage and scout so well so they were hired by other clans for this job (but laiter destroyed by Oda Nobunaga). Also ninjutsu/shinobi no jutsu add no more matrial art skills to the samurai. Samurai already trained matrial arts (kenjutsu, kyujutsu, sōjutsu etc.) and as addition he trainend in ninjutsu.

@Shadow Octopus 749 No problem. Sad truth is that not everyone wants to accept truth. But thats their problem... moust japanese dont understand this topic as well and imagine those black fantasy assasin or even nonsence like a naruto.

Bushido during sengoku-jidai wasn't the same as during other periods from what I've learned. Some actions that might be considered "dishonourable" in other periods were considered fully honourable during that period. In Sengoku-Jidai, my impression is that honour was deeply tied to how well you served your Lord and completed missions successfully. If completing a mission required assassinations or even shooting a man in the back, even samurai would do it. So it's easy to see why the services of the Koga and Iga ninjutsu practicioners were considered more "normal" in this period of vicious civil war, compared to other periods where it might be seen as disgraceful.

So basically Ninjas were smarter and kept themselves alive, seeing the uselessness in risking getting killed. Keep quiet and do the job. That will be your victory.

I like when real history and facts about Ninja are being spread around. They were such a purposefully mysterious class in feudal Japan, so it naturally makes you curious to learn more about them. But it's a difficult subject since the topic is influenced a lot by myth and modern fiction, making it even harder to discern the facts from the myths.

Truly fascinating. I'd certainly like to learn more about the less fanciful history of the Ninja. • What did the common people (peasants, craftsmen, merchants, etc.) think about the Ninja during the different eras of Japanese history? Were they just thought of as mercenaries/soldiers/servants/etc. of the lords? Were they afraid of them? Or, were they really unknown until fiction & stories began to be circulated about them? • Having the fiction being spread about them could be both an advantage & a detriment. Did the Ninja clan leaders of the past ever plant stories, myths & propaganda of their own - about the ninja - to confuse & demoralise their enemies? I have read several histories about famous Ninja & was fascinated to learn that not only had there been great women Ninja who earned power & authority, but - after gunpowder weapons were brought to Japan by Europeans - there were several Ninja snipers who used rifles over great distance with extraordinary skill. • Are there any famous classical plays or stage shows with Ninja characters? (I suspect that many talented actors & artists of past eras would have found the idea of secret Ninja clans & villages, just as fascinating as we do today.)

The impression that I get, is that if the Iga and Koka clan ever fought, it was never anything personal, just business, aka they were hired by clients with conflicting best interests.

Yes. One of the biggest cases of that were the Invasions Of Iga in 1579 and 1581. Oda Nobunaga, the famous warlord, was trying to reunite Japan. Around the 1560s, he had just conquered the Omi province. The warriors of Koka, who were the local samurai that specialized as ninjas in southern Omi, ended up falling under Nobunaga's control. Nobunaga then had his son Nobukatsu indirectly conquer the Ise province by marrying into the most powerful family in Ise, the Kitabatake. Come 1570s, most of central and western Japan was under Nobunaga's control... except for the province of Iga, which was underneath Omi province and to the west of Ise. Like their allies in southern Omi, the local samurai in Iga were ninjas, but the difference was that they didn't serve a warlord at all. Nobukatsu tried to construct a castle in the middle of the province to start conquering Iga, but the samurai of Iga found out, so they snuck into the castle and burnt it to the ground. When Nobukatsu tried to retaliate, his men were surrounded by the Iga samurai hiding around the mountains and were being shot at by arrows, bullets, and mortars. Nobunaga found out, was extremely pissed off at Nobukatsu, and then sent an even larger force to invade Iga in 1581, with many of the samurai on his side being from Koka. This didn't really damper the relationship between the Iga and Koka samurai, because they later worked together to help guide Tokugawa Ieyasu through their lands in 1582 after Nobunaga died. Ieyasu then later hired 200 Iga ninjas and 100 Koka ninjas as his castle guards, as spies, and as low level samurai policemen.

Being a ninja keeps this dude super young!! Right out the gate I thought he was maybe late 30’s or early 40’s at most but he said he started the dojo in his 40’s… wow. He looks great

That backhand grip and twisting the saya to the back during the Kenjutsu portion was so cool. I never imagined it to be executed like that. The katas at the start were also Kuji-in.

I find a lot of value in these videos. They are entertaining, informative, and it’s kinda of cool to see that there are historically relevant things in Naruto, or Senran Kagura, etc. great stuff, Shogo!

What a wonderful and quite moving two part video, Shogo! It was especially fascinating to hear Ichikawa's opinion that ninja are heavily associated with children's entertainment in Japan. Overseas, ninja definitely have an exaggerated, mystical image from their portrayal in entertainment-but it's just often for teen to adult-age audiences, which is maybe why more overseas adults are later interested in learning more. After watching these videos, I'm more able to think about ninja arts as part of traditional culture that we can celebrate for its own unique qualities.

I love this Ninjitsu Sensei. His sword Kata is very beautiful.

a Scout Sniper or Reconnaissance specialist might be a more apt comparison. Traditionally a "Commando" is going to go in, do as much damage as possible, then disappear, whereas much like a Ninja a Scout Sniper or Recon Specialist is more likely to be sent out simply to gather intelligence or conduct a targeted assassination.

I love this I'm glad finally after all this time it comes out who the were and how they lived. I've spent a long time as a young kid researching Shinobi and Samurai including the Japanese lifestyle even in ancient times as far back in the Jomon period.

@3:55 - to put this in more familiar terms to people in the West, especially the US like me ... ninja were one of early versions of SpecOps operators, the special forces of combat techs. Intelligence, guerilla warfare, assassination, sabotage, interdiction ... that's SpecOps, right there.

I was really interested in martial arts as a kid (some 30 years ago) and for a time by the world of shinobi and ninja. I remember reading the life stories of a few, like one who having been captured, peed in his fundoshi which he then used it to escape by climbing over a wall. The author of the book added at the end that those we knew about were likely not the best, those who be the ones who remained unnoticed. My interest for all this ended after a wrestling play with my younger brother. He managed to throw me down and trying to catch myself, I stabbed my hand on some shuko that were left on the floor. This ended up by a trip to the ER and looking for safer hobbies.

Hi Shogo, sorry for writing this on this video, which is about an enterily different topic, but felt the urge to ask. I know this question and topic is completely outside the reach of this channel, so if it's not the correct place to ask, i'm sorry. My question was about the punishment / laws and legal system regarding juvenile crimes. I like to research true crime cases, and always felt regret on how the system failed Junko Furuta on 1989. I can't conceive how the main 4 torturers, are now free, leaving a good life, and also how all the people that were invited to see didn't contact police, or if they took part, didn't had a punishment. Also have questions regarding how they were able to use the name of the Yakuza as they pleased to get away with anything, these guys had a free pass to do everything they pleased, the higher ups were okay with their behaviour ? I don't know, but i would think that if some leader gets the info that a low rank thug is doing all of that to a high school girl using the name of the group as a badge, he would intervene at least (? Again, sorry for bringing this topic to a channel that has nothing to do with this kind of topics, but really wanted to get the opinion from a citizen. I love you content, and would like to know about more topics like how scholarships systems are handled, most popular / needed jobs/carrers or how to make temari balls :D Thanks !

Yakuza were originally formed from various groups of ronin. Ninja from the samurai caste who became ronin would have easily found new work as Yakuza.

Is this clan the same as we hear on NINJA HATTORI?

Why don't you cover more popular media depictions of historical periods and characters and compare them to the real life? Would be interesting to see what anime/manga , TV shows, movies or games understand the period or characters well. If you don't feel too comfortable about your knowledge in those areas, you can collab with another youtuber and decide on themes or choose specific series with them.

What do you mean? His katana is curved too. Unless you are talking about Sai, that's not actually a sword or a dagger but a baton.

Why are the KOKA/KOGA region ninjas depicted as being the "bad" guys in ninja films of the 60's 70's and the "IGA" ninjas depicted as being the righteous and honorable ninjas ? Where the film directors from the IGA region? What is it about the KOKA/KOGA region that makes them "bad" vs the "IGA" region?

Probably has to do with Hattori Hanzo being a samurai from Iga and serving as spy master for the Tokugawa.

The thing about ninja 🥷 is that usa 🇺🇸 government models it’s military special operations forces after the ninja 🥷
