he hit the nail on the head with that bit about re-recording things after demoing them, and how they lose their magic a little. That has happened to me so many times where I had an idea I thought was cool, went back to make it "better" only for it to not sound as good or as cool as the original version.

What you guys said about demos is so true. A good example is how different songs sounded on the Mean's End EP versus how they sounded on the Didact album. Really interesting to hear both of your perspectives on this.

The discussion about demos reminds me of when Audioslave's first album demos got leaked to P2P services. I remember preferring some of the demo versions of the songs. Particularly the solo in the Like a Stone, because the melody was simpler and more direct before Tom added more effects to it. But it's hard not to overthink things and try to make everything sound cooler, so I get it.

The New Reign by Born of Osiris is still one of my favourite albums to this day. Even though the production isn't the best, and it's a bit muffled by today's standards, it's still heavy as fuck and every song slaps. And I've felt "demo-itis" as he called it. I felt it just this past weekend. I'm starting to do updated demos of songs I recorded from 2018-2020, and one of the songs just doesn't sound quite right, even though it's better in basically every way. 😛

There are usually elements in a demo that are better than album versions. It’s little things that make a big difference; but overall, they do improve.

Title isn't accurate BUT the talk about demo-itis was extremely useful/important to me. I've recently gotten just above the skill threshold where now I'm so obsessed with everything being perfect that it's literally stopping me from writing and recording music altogether. Going back and trying to re-record or in some cases even re-write songs from years ago always made the end result feel lifeless and it really bummed me out. It felt like a disservice to not present any given song in its clearest/best form but I see now the real disservice is not being able to accept the song as a flawed piece of art and letting that stop me from releasing it or even worse, letting that stop me from recording it in the first place.

Everyone's talking about the demo/early vs remix idea (and I love the sound of 2000s metal which would sound incredibly different today if they were remixed) but I want to bring up the problem that you'd think that at this point in the 21st century bands would have access to share their earliest demos and pre-label EPs compared to years before but even in this age of rights and streaming we still don't have access to the vast majority of early demos and EPs before bands signed any smidge of a record deal, and to me that's really sad.

I always get these guys suggested to me, and I knew just by looking at them that it would be stuff I’m not into, but when I hear the bands they’re referencing I just can’t believe my ears. These are full-grown, adult men, at least my age or older, talking about Born of Osiris and Whitechapel? That’s stuff for 12 year old girls. They’re 35+ and still haven’t grown up and discovered actual metal yet? Tf is this deathcore crap they’re on about. In one way I’m disappointed but at the same time I’m not surprised because the cool thing to do in this day and age is pretend you like whatever garbage is out there and popular so you don’t look like “an elitist” or “a gatekeeper” (which are in actuality just inoffensive synonyms for “not a poser”).
