How can you cope with the fact that all humans have a right to live with a home, food and clothes and the fact maybe billions of people will die in order to contain consumption that is sustainable enough for humanity to live comfortably with the rest of the beings on this planet?

People need to stop misrepresenting agriculture. Farming where the animals are allowed to graze outside is not a net pollutant. American style meat production is the problem, where animals are packed into sheds.

  • @gorgzilla1712

28% of arable land is used for grazing animals, but only 1% of protein globally is derived from that source. Animal ag is the leading cause of land use change, biodiversity loss and Amazon rainforest deforestation, and that’s WITH the vast majority of animal products coming from intensive farms as you describe. So do you propose we expand the intensive farms to take up more land for inefficient food production?

When I was 18, I went vegan. I broke out with severe acne worse than I ever had as a young teenager. When I was 22 I moved to Alaska and started eating wild salmon, moose and grouse. My acne went away. I’ve come to the conclusion that not every one can be healthy as a vegan.

I went meatless (not vegan) for a few months several years ago. I followed all the diet rules and guidelines, but it was awful. I felt hungry all the time and the meat cravings were unbearable. I remember seeing a neighbor's cow and imagined running into the field and gnawing on its head. I started eating meat again and felt better, but I learned to balance meat and non meat protein.

You didn't do it right. The largest organization of nutrition professionals officially declared- "It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes. Plant-based diets are more environmentally sustainable than diets rich in animal products because they use fewer natural resources and are associated with much less environmental damage. Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk of certain health conditions, including ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and obesity. Low intake of saturated fat and high intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nuts, and seeds (all rich in fiber and phytochemicals) are characteristics of vegetarian and vegan diets that produce lower total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and better serum glucose control. These factors contribute to reduction of chronic disease. Vegans need reliable sources of vitamin B-12, such as fortified foods or supplements." -Full abstract from the position paper as found on PubMed from the National Institutes of Health

Animals produce more than just food items and almost all "vegan" alternatives are fossil-fuel/plastic based, which ironically contribute globally to both irreversible chemical pollution an ~80% of emissions. This issue is largely misrepresented though. 1. The fees given to animals is not necessarily food that is available for human consumption. How a cow digests food if different to a human, and thus they have different dietary needs than human beings. A lot of feedstock given to animals like cows, sheep and goats are waste products of conventional grains for human consumption. For example corn humans eat the actual cob, but a corn plant is lot more than just the cob. The stalk and stem, which actually make up a larger portion of the plant is given as feed to cattle, so to act like we are taking corn away from people by feeding these parts of the plant to cattle is pretty disingenuous. 2. Water usage is captured as the total amount of water utilized for farming feed for cows and water that cows take in. As a roaming species that primarily gets their nutrients from grass feeds this means you’re actually including rainwater as the amount of water spent utilized by animal agriculture. If cows didn’t exist would the water usage change? In the case of rainwater - no because the same amount would still be utilized by the grasses in this area. 3. Animal agriculture takes up too much space for crop farming. Not necessarily because where crops can effectively grow is very different than where animal agriculture can be utilized. Crop farming is significantly more influenced by climate than animal agriculture. You need proper weather conditions, seasonal conditions, soil characteristics etc. 4. If we greatly reduce animal agriculture are there any negative impacts for crop production? Well actually yes, specifically in terms of organic fertilizer production. Currently the super majority of fertilizer production comes from either manure or chemical ammonia based fertilizer. By reducing animal yields you reduce the quantity of manure that could be utilized for crops. Now we do have chemical based fertilizer, but with the pressures of reducing reliance on fossil fuels and given the fact that within chemical based fertilizers fossil fuels are used in over 80% of all systems to create these fertilizers, well now you have a significant issue where by reducing natural manure you increase demand for fossil fuel based chemical fertilizer production which is arguably more detrimental to the climate.

Humans can't just stop eating. The question is what kind of food we should produce and eat. A large percentage of the crops raised are used for farm animal feed. Grass fed cows emit significantly more methane than grain fed cows, since they take longer to get to slaughter weight. We get a lot less calories and even protein from animal products than the calories and protein in the crops we feed them.
