I'm African, almost every soup I cook has okra, I mean a bowlful each time and can never have too much of it. I grew up on okra in thick vegetable soup.

At the end of okra season you can cut off the tops and use the okra canes to stake up fava beans in the fall/ early winter. But only do this if you have mild winters, zone 7+! (Favas take 100+ days to mature and will not tolerate heavy frost.) The canes will die but are very woõdy and they do not break

It doesn't have a good shelf life. Pick it, and then cook, pickle, or freeze on the same day ---- and that happens just about every single day with only a few plants. Every day if you have a bunch. It is expensive in the store too, when they do have it. Pick it young. That is when it is best -- not tough or fibrous. That's part of the reason that okra is expensive in the store --- short shelf life and loss. It is easy to grow. Grow some purple hulls or blackeyed peas in the same area. They like the same soils and conditions. They go good together too, as you know, being another Southerner. They are also very easy to save seed from them for next year.

Finally found a master okra producer! My Aunt Ivey (RIP) was from Kingston and we lived in Evanston Illinois ( won't trouble you the history), but Aunt Ivey came to visit after our part of the family had moved to Independence Kansas. She only wanted to see the farms...! Which was OK with me too, because the population was less than 20,000. I was not really interested in farms at that time, but I came from farmers, gardeners, taxi drivers, and horse/mule & trainers. Now I am starting to get the "garden part" right!

This is very interesting! We actually space our Okro 1.5ft apart to allow for that bushiness. Each sucker will pruduce it's own fruit set. I'm curious what the labour savings and production increase would be if you space more plants closely like you have, put the extra work of pruning vs allowing for each plant to produce more fruit by giving more space but having the issue of having to take extra time to find the fruit that likes to hide. Would be interesting to compare!

This is my 2nd year growing okra. Other than peppers, it was the only thing that produced during our (unexpectedly early) extreme Texas heat last year. So this year, I put in a BUNCH, and I knew I spaced them a too close. But here you are, teaching me how to make it work and right on time. THANK YOU! & God bless you and yours!

Yes, it was too hot last year (Texas, just NW of Houston). Plant some purple hull or blackeyed peas. They took the heat well just like my okra, and they taste good together. Both are fairly easy to grow and like the same soils and conditions. My purple hulls are coming along a little better than my okra is right now. We'll see if my okra picks up soon. It's been fairly cool. I had some indeterminate cherry tomatoes we put in pots last year. They made well early on before the heat set in. It was so hot that some couldn't ripen at midpoint (extreme extended heat prevents it). Then came those particular bugs that feed on tomatoes right on time. We threw all the sad tomatoes to my neighbor's chickens. We moved the cherry tomatoes to an area near and under some oak trees during the worst of it. But then when it cooled down, we got some more cherry tomatoes before the entire season ended. We had some larger tomatoes, but they didn't produce anything we could eat. Too hot to ripen. I have not yet had any success with peppers. I finally had some success with onions this year. I have had trouble with zucchini but got one so far this year. The plant is mostly male flowers. It is full and pretty though. lol. It has another one zucchini that will be ready soon. I have some cucumbers doing well and spaghetti squash that is similarly happy this year so far. We have some more tomatoes coming along well so far (same cherry and roma).

Last year was peppers and okra for our family in central Texas, too. This year I added a few crops to my summer garden: 1. Butter beans take the heat well, I have mine growing on poles connected by rope so they're easy to harvest and provide a little shade to the garden beds beneath. 2. I'm growing cuccuza gourds for the first time, they're very vigorous climbers and the vine borers leave them alone. Just two plants have given an abundance of squash that you can use just like zucchini, they get 2ft long in about 5-7 days from pollination. 3. Long beans, a type of vining cowpea from Asia. I've grown these before and they're slow to start but end up with 15'+ vines and thrive in hot humid weather. I was not impressed with the quality of the beans though so I'm growing another variety this year, "Thai soldier bean" with shorter, more tender pods.

This reply is a bit late. If your plants are 8 feet tall and not producing I am guessing you have way too much nitrogen in the soil. If you did use manure, fertilizer, etc back off on the nitrogen. The soil could also be lacking potassium.

My grandparents used to 'whip' their okra late season when it got really hot and the okra slowed down production. They used wild cane that grows along the bottoms. But, you can use any green sapling that's around 1/2" diameter. I don't know the science behind it, but it stimulates the plant to produce more. They whipped the bottom of the plants below the okra pods.

  • @Africa1000

Okra hates cold and needs full sun. Assuming you are in a suitable climate, it's probably best not to feed at all, apart from a little compost. You can get away with zero feeding and your plant will still produce.Don't overwater. Stick to once a day (maximum twice a day if you really must). Okra doesn't really like a lot of fussing over. Just let nature do its thing.

How many plants do you have there? They look a bit too close to each other. How far do you plant them apart? Thank you.
