How and When to use Ciprofloxacin? (Ciloxan, Ciproxin, Neofloxin) - Doctor Explains

Welcome back to How To Medicate and welcome to this video on how and when to use Ciprofloxacin. I already made several videos on different antibiotics and if you are interested you can find those in the playlist here:
• Everything on Antibiot...
Generic name: Ciprofloxacin.
Brand names: Ciloxan, Cipro, Ciproxin and Neofloxin.
Available as: granules for oral suspension, tablets and injections.
How to use it?
Swallow the capsule whole with half a glass of water. Don’t break it, don’t chew on it and don’t take it with milk, because this can make Ciprofloxin less effective.
If you want to use the granules. It’s package consists of a small bottle with dry granules and a larger bottle with liquid. Add the dry granules to the liquid bottle. Close the cap and shake vigorously for 15 seconds. Do not add any extra water or liquid! Lastly measure the right amount/dose exactly with a the measuring spoon.
Duration of treatment?
Usually 3 days to 3 weeks, but it can be up to several months.
It is important that you do not interrupt the treatment and finish it completely.
When to use it?
Ciprofloxacin is used for ”serious” infections caused by micro-organisms sensitive to Ciprofloxacin.
What is the correct dosage?
Always use the dosage and frequency prescribed by your own doctor.
General guideline for adults using capsules or granules: 500-750 mg every 12 hours.
Forgotten a dose?
Does it take less than 4 hours till your next dose? Than skip the dose you missed and take the forgotten dose at the end of your treatment.
What are the side-effects?
Very common (1-10%): nausea, diarrhea.
Common (0,1-1%): dyspepsia, abdominal pain, vomiting, flatulence, headache, dizziness, sleep disturbances, joint pain, fever.
Ciprofloxacin can have serious side effects.
Safety:
You can combine Ciprofloxacin with any type of food and even with alcohol. However it can have some interactions with other drugs. Therefore always ask your prescribing doctor if Ciprofloxacin is safe for you to use.
It is also important you don’t use Ciprofloxacin if you are hypersensitive to fluorchinolonen.
Pregnancy and Lactation:
The usage of Ciprofloxacin while being pregnant or while breastfeeding can be dangerous for your unborn child. Therefore you should not use it and ask your doctor for an other antibiotic.

I can’t believe I took these pills for a whole month as prescribed from my doctor. Took these for prostatitis and developed twitching in my calves and fingers that never happened before I took these. The scariest thing while on these pills was never being able to sleep for more than 4 hours because my body would force itself awake. Thankfully this is gone but I was so anxious. Definitely would recommend being prescribed some other antibiotic that is safer. These should be like a last resort

I just started taking this medication a couple of days ago for an intestinal infection, and it's working soooo well. I was severely nauseous and could hardly eat, not to mention loads of other horrible symptoms, and this medication is clearing it up like magic. I'm only on day 3 and my appetite has almost fully come back, which is amazing. I do have a couple of side effects like stomach pain and insomnia, but it's not too terrible. Whenever my stomach starts to hurt, I just lay down and let it pass. Remember to eat well, drink juice (especially grapefruit juice, great for the liver), take probiotics and relaaaax. Especially if you're treating any kind of infection, your pills will be 10 times more effective if you go easy on yourself. Wishing everyone good health :)

If you’re reading these comments and are worried because your doctor prescribed them, then please take caution from what you see and hear.I was diagnosed with prostatitis. Doctor prescribed ciprofloxacin. This is my third day taking it. Second day I had a slight headache. But this day my tendons are aching my head is pounding and I feel a little weak. From reading these comments I suggest you only take this when this is your last option. Other than that stay away from this.

@@ayushi3243 Hi sorry for late respond ... So I went to the doctor because I had a pain on my lower right belly, constipation and frequent urination.. .. There he did a fast urine test which was negative.... Asked whether I had fever, blood in urine, diarrhea, burning urine and I said no because I didn't have any of that..... He said that I'll have to do an echography... I did it and they noticed a mild fullness in my right kidney.... Now that doctor said that he will prescribe me antibiotics as a "precautionary measure" because according to him my right kidney took more time to dislodge water and he THOUGHT that I might be having a urinary tract infection which he thinks might be affecting my right kidney...he prescribed me ciprofloxacin for 7 days per 12 hours and said that I will eventually have to go to an urologist and do a blood test if the pain persists.... I didn't know much about antibiotics at that time so I took it.... The first day I took it, I had insomnia, my right ribcage and my knees pained and even told the doctor about it but he said that it's not related and to continue... He said that even when you take dolipran you get pain in knees so it's nothing.... Yeah so to me at that time my respond was like he's a doctor, so he should know his work... I trusted and continued on taking the pills... The more I was taking the pills the more I felt weak, I had muscle weakness, my joints pained, my bones were shrinking and I was literally loosing 1kg a day..... On the fourth day, I couldn't anymore, I told my dad to call the doctor about it... Still his response was the same..."its nothing and continue on... Even when you take dolipran you get muscle pain and blabla" .... Then I told him that my left side of the rib was also paining... Then he said to stop and to go to the urologist... 2 days after I stopped the antibiotic, I noticed that my right leg became longer that my left and my right rib shrank(idk it's whether my right kidney took more time to dislodge cipro that's why my right side of my body deformed... Do you think it's this?)... I got randez vous with the urologist 4 days after I stopped the pills.... I went to the urologist and there seeing my echography results, he said that the bulge in my right kidney was very mild and it was nothing to worry about. He also said that the antibiotic was unessasary.... I went back to that generalist doctor who prescribed me cipro because I needed answers. Again he was like no it's totally fine to prescribe cipro as a precautionary antibiotic... I told him that I read on the net that cipro damages the kidney more and he was like "penicillin affects the livers so when you have throat pain we don't prescrib you penicillin"... He refused admit that he shitted.... Meanwhile I was getting insomia, thoughts running like crazy at night, my head pained, I had difficulty remembering and my eyes and skin turned yellow and my bones on my right feet swelled. I went to a bone doctor and again there he told me that the antibiotic was an over treatment.... He said that if the doctor was really that worried about the bulge, the least he could do was doing another echography one week later to see whether the bulge increased or onot and definitely not prescribe antibiotic..... 2months passed..now I get difficulty breathing, I still get insomia, my bones pain, right side of my head and right eye continually pain, I forget stuffs a lot, vertigo while doing yoga, loosing hair, muscle pain, tendon pain, back pain like hell, eyes, skin yellow and poop pale brown... I'm just 19 years old and it's frustrating for me to see all of that changes overnight... I was doing just good and look at me now.... And the worse is that many many many doctors here... Even the specialist don't know about the adverse effects of fluroquinolene drugs... So when I tell them about my side effects and my experience on this antibiotic, they either shut me off saying I'm overthinking or they say that I'm reading too much on the internet... if I want to go get imaging done to see if somethings ruined inside, I don't have the support of neither doctors nor my parents and I don't have my own money to do it. So I have to wait for end stages for steps to be taken... To end, I want to request you that someday when you become a doctor, please think 10 thousand times before prescribing your patients fluroquinolenes because this shit is seriously changing lives in a bad way right here...

You will never know what side effects you get unless you try the medicine personally. Everyone is different. Hi Extra-large Comedy, Indeed you should not take ciprofloxacin with dairy products. And I think Ovaltine is considered a dairy product. However, if you want to know for sure you could contact your prescribing physician and ask them.

Hello sir I am 22 years old and the doctor prescribed ciprofloxacin to me because of abdominal pain. But I read that cirofloxacin is not given to people under 18 years of age because it affects the growth plates of children and adolescents. But I read some articles on the Internet that the growth plates close at the age of 25. Did the medication affect my growth plates? Is it scientifically wrong to say that the growth plates close at the age of 25? My last question: If we assume that ciprofloxacin affected my growth plates, what are the signs that indicate that??? Thanks

No doctor should be prescribing ANY sort of antibiotic for abdominal pain, NOT EVER. This is how we get antibiotic resistant bacteria then we die bc the antibiotic won’t work. Flat out. Don’t take it. It’ll kill all bacteria in gut flora and then you’ll have MASSIVE WORSE problems and more pain I bet you.

I have a bottle Cipro I didn’t take a month ago for infection (because a test showed I needed a different antibiotic) Anyways I think I may have a staph spot and I want to know is it safe and effective to take Cipro so it’s not going untreated till Monday.
