How An Ancient Hawaiian Food Still Makes It To The Plate - Dining on a Dime
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In a classic Hawaiian meal, poi is the main starch on the plate. It plays the same role in a dish that rice often would: It's filling, and it complements the other flavors in the meal. In this episode of Dining on a Dime, host Lucas Peterson stops by the Waiahole Poi Factory for a truly Hawaiian meal (and a music lesson on the nose flute).

I love Lucas. Honestly one of my favorite food hosts. He's so respectful, educated, and well spoken in the Eater videos I've seen, especially when they are about an unfamiliar cuisine, his decency is on display in how he navigates it and the culture its from. Also, his moment with the kid...my ovaries may never recover.

I love these comments about how Lucas approaches these episodes with kindness and authenticity. I do feel like I could trust him.
The way Lucas describes the food is absolutely perfect. As a professional cook, those are the exact type of descriptor words that we would all love our servers to use because they can truly make one salivate and satiate for something of that nature. The only way to be able to do what Lucas does is to 1) eat lots and try everything and 2) do some actual research on cuisine/cultures and not just base your food knowledge off of which hype restaurants you've eaten at (which Lucas clearly does as he hosts ... Dining on a Dime heh).

I love how respectful and educated on the culture he is. This is a platform to reach out to so many people who want to learn more about Hawaii and its cuisine; unfortunately, a lot of the times it is misrepresented by people who butcher the language and/or traditions or rudely critique the food and think it's funny.
In a world full of casual slander and insults, I love how Lucas interacts with such careless courtesy. Well done once again Lucas. You bring food to life in a lovely way.

Anyone else notice how Nick Smith tried to repeatedly write how boring Lucas is in every single video in hopes that someone will care about what he says 😂😂😂 This guy needs a life
As much as I enjoy watching this series because of Lucas' character and personality. What really gets me is his knowledge in food and how he's able to reference to other cultures of food so well. I'm curious to know how much of this is scripted and if isn't at all, what his culinary background is.
In the Philippines, we have a native dish in the province of Bicol called "Laing" which is basically stewed taro leaves with pork and coconut milk seasoned with "Bagoong" (shrimp paste).
My favorite DoaD episode yet. Not because of the food (not that there was anything wrong with it), but because of Lucas. What a great show. Please don't stop.
please don't stop the series Lucas, otherwise i would miss you too much
I love how Lucas is always so open to eating new cuisines and experiencing cultures.

I like his honesty. He's straight forward and gives his honest opinion, unlike Mark Wiens, where everything is amazing.

I love the series you did in Hawaii. It makes me feel like i'm included in something haha. Especially since people don't really talk about Hawaii in the way that it's being represented in the Eater videos.
Lucas, your specific comment about not treating poi as a fetish while at the same time acknowledging its prominence, was quite insightful. I just started watching more of your videos and instances like this have shown me that food is more than just food. It's about the people and community behind it. Thank you for this.
i love poi factory so much, growing up in kaneohe so many friends and family members working there and just making great hawaiian food 🤙🏽

Beautiful food! Beautiful man! Thank-you Lucas.
"Not T-A-E like you drink, but T-I". Lucas come on man 😂😂😂
Lucas' facial expression at 1:05 after the car honks... amazing.
Glad the owner knows about mochi. It's immediately what came to mind when I saw them pounding the poi.
Lucas, showing us he is a man of many skills!!!👍😀
Fantastic video Lucas
SOOOOOOO glad you guys put this up on here !! :) because this isnt on our tv here !! ( in australia)
I really like this dude. Mahalo for coming to Hawaii!
Lucas you are the man!
That beef and squid luau is like what we call callaloo in Trinidad & Tobago. There's ochro in ours but it's pretty much the same from the recipes I've seen. That's so cool.
Excellent video! Mahalo nui! I liked and subscribed.
Where i am from 8n the Caribbean..we call taro.. dasheen..we boil the roots and make a dish with the young leaves called callaloo..really delish..

Hi Lucas.. ur my new fave!
lucas is the man. his authenticity shows.
I love taro leave stew! 💕
I may not have eaten there, though I probably passed by there on my way to somewhere else, during an afternoon deluge just like that!
The sweet lady is bomb as hell!! Man I miss Hawaii
Food looks kind of weird but definitely would like to try it! Heard it's great.
Liko is like a keeper of hawaiian tradition, even though he looks more mixed than full blooded polynesian
Mean da poi! Cheee! Love the hawaii series
Damn that looks good
Taro Roots/Leaves=the Heart of Polynesian Food. Taro+Palusami=Heaven.
I really like this host
low key in love with lucas
lucas keepin it casual
Dang I need to visit Kaneohe more
0:55, wait. is that.. is that supposed to be oahu? Lol wtf. also, kaneohes in the east not the norf isnt it? when i think of north i think kahuku, north shore, haleiwa
You forgot desert Hot kulolo like pudding with coconut or vanilla ice cream. They might not have had it available that day. You gotta try it it's delicious.
wow only 1 dislike, this is pretty amazing from youtube cause usually you would get at least 30 even for the simplest of stuff
My favorite place for poi 😭😭
Poi is like the sound the taro slime makes when it gets pounded
i lost it when he picked up the whole pork lau lau by hand 😂😂😂
I can see He's been working out :))
So is poi perfectly edible while it’s still doughy like mochi, or is it meant to be watery paste (as a way to increase yield)
"how long do you spend pounding?" lol

Lucas, whats your favourite soccer team?
Native Hawaiians Quick Question? Do you usually eat the Ti leaf and the Taro leaf when it's steamed like that with the pork? Just because in some cultures Ive seen them cook it in leaves but since it isn't seasoned they don't eat it with it yknow? Just curious.
