How America Got Hooked on Opioids | The War on Drugs

Ойын-сауық

In The War On Drugs Show, we examine the social implications of prohibition worldwide.
Any attempt to shut down the trade in drugs such as heroin,
cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine or weed invariably sets off a chain of events that just makes things worse, leaving a trail of death, illness, violence, slavery, addiction, crime and inequality across the globe. Everyone loses - except, in a weird kind of way, the drugs themselves.
Around 58,000 Americans were killed in the Vietnam War. But in 2017 alone, 70,237 Americans died of drug overdoses; the War on Drugs is like a Vietnam War every year.
This is the story of the North America Opioid Crisis - how an oversupply of the prescription drug oxycodone collided with fifty years of drug prohibition to create an epidemic every bit as serious as COVID-19.
This terrifying crisis reaches every corner of American life, far beyond the clichés of the 'inner-city drug user'.

Why? You people are swinging that pendulum from a war on drugs to a war on the sick by stacking half truths and ignoring folks with actual pain. Your (and other media conglomerates like you) are stacking public opinions like firewood, to the point that doctors are afraid to prescribe these meds to people with ACTUAL pain, forcing them into an existence of suffering. Tell both sides of the story. Don't play the, "news for views" game.

I was a nurse for 44 years in a hospital. The thing that always stood out to me was in the 70s and 80s we could tell a patient,”this is going to hurt but it will get better.” Then as the years went by more and more patients had the attitude that they shouldn’t feel any discomfort at all. (Even after major surgery). They either wanted to be numb or unconscious. That’s when doctors started ordering more and more opioids instead of Tylenol for pain.

I am a male nurse who works in the Surgical Station. Most of the Patients would often claim they're dying from pain after operation. God knows how many times I've given them compounds of Oxycodon and Targin to ease their pain after informing the Doctors of their condition, not even knowing what kind of medicine was in question. This is one of the few reasons I've considered changing my profession. I made the final move a few days ago. Will be changing my profession, don't want anything to do with the hospital anymore. I don't blame the Doctors, they're humans too, I see it in their eyes they want to help people. Many of them have chosen this Job in order to be able to help Patientens, many of them have lost loved ones and decided they want to be Doctors. I am not blaming the Patientens either. I don't know what kind of pain they experienced after operations. Seeking for someone to blame, it won't help anyone.

It’s not the patients fault, it’s the pharmaceutical companies and the doctors, how else would a patient even know about pain meds. And now you don’t have any commercials except about medication, doesn’t tell you what it’s for, they say just go to the doctor to see if you. Screw that, I was a medical assistant in the early 2000 and pharmaceutical reps would come in all the time, give away medication like it was candy, plus doctors get take bribes. I know this for a fact. You need to taper down on the medication, not just yanked off it. Can’t stand doctors.

Had two spine surgeries and never went past the pill stage, thank God I had the presence of mind, and family to guide me through it. My sis did not. Addiction is such an ugly monster because it tears families apart, destroys lives, and the fact that unlike crack of the 80s or cocaine in the 70s, in this day of age you can get your drug from your own doctor. That guy at 2:15 reminds me of my neighbor that I had in California. He was the star high school quarterback and was destined to go pro. Until he hurt his back. It ruined his chances to become the star that he so aspired for. Because of the injury, he was given pain pills. From just being an occasional pot smoker to using E almost daily, to meth, and then eventually to heroin. I saw a bright young man be absolutely destroyed by drugs. After 5 years of his abuse, he went to rehab and got cleaned up. Unfortunately, he relapsed one day and went driving in his truck and got into a bad accident and died. He was my best friend at the time. He went from being a superstar to a druggie in less than a year. I didn't recognize him. I didn't know who he was anymore. He hung out with people I have never seen before and they were people you would want to avoid. R.I.P. Cheech. I miss and love you brother. God is taking care of you now.

Poppies are used to develop opiates, like morphine and heroin. Opioids (note the “oid” suffix-like “humanoid”) mimic natural opiates but are fully synthetic and made in chemical factories. They act on your body similarly to natural opiates, but are not derived from natural ingredients. That’s why a typical urine test has a separate test for each opiates and opioids.

Thank you. This was so educational, I'm in Australia and we have a terrible problem over here as well. I watch another youtube channel as well called 'The Life Boat' that really focuses on educating people on drugs, addiction and living happily in sobriety. They have had a lot of great shows lately similar to this . They have a live stream at 5pm (USA Pacific Time) everyday except Wed and Thurs and a live chat. You can also call in live to talk about your experiences and ask the hosts questions. They are extremely knowledgable and helpful with no judgement. It's just a loving, friendly place to go, regardless of what is happening in your life. Your channel and other ones like this are really needed to educate people about this horrific, growing nightmare .. so many people are dying. Thank you again for your video. Please be safe everyone.

I worked in the medical field in the 90s and we were wide open to it. Studies came down the pipeline explaining that we had cancer patients who were dying with virtually no pain medication on board and that we were underprescribing people with horrible amounts of pain. It was a wake-up call and moves were made to ensure that we treated our patient's pain; new assessment criteria were put in place and things were looking up. Who could have guessed that a snake would crawl into that place we made in our hearts for our suffering patients?

As in the past the medical est. haven't any solution's for people in pain now it's so bad ,no one cares and your on your own people don't expect anything cause your not gonna get anything.so society has abandoned the legit users of opiates . Government is making money now also in rehab facilities.instead of from big pharma lobbyist and I believe everything coming in with heroin Fentynl illegally as well as the change in pot legalized, it's another way govt getting a payday. imo I don't think I'm exaggerating any .

It is important to understand that stamping out one universal policy is not the right thing to do. Taking away peoples medicine and making it impossible to get will only force people to do other things.I feel like first the legal prescription drugs are taken away, then even the legit street drugs were taken away and people had fentanyl forced onto them. Before I knew it I was taking over 160mg oxycontin a day plus absolutely anything else I could get my hands on with codeine etc... Thankfully I never touched heroin or a needle because here in Australia I was able to go to another doctor who prescribed me Suboxone which is a mix of Buprenorphine and Naloxone, its a dissovable tab you put underneath your tongue. I'm now 2 years clean and 3 months off the Suboxone. It's literally a LIFE SAVER. Good luck everyone, sending all my strength and love to you all.

thankfully, for many applications, appropriate doses of NSAIDs like ibuprofen and Toradol have actually been found to be more effective than opioids, the drawback is that NSAIDS, especially over-the-counter ones are easy to abuse, not to get high since they're not psychoactive but just to get rid of the pain, which can cause some serious damage to the stomach and kidneys. I think most things in medicine are kind of a double-edged sword

We got hooked by those ppl in the community most of you looked up to. Their squeaky clean backgrounds and prestigious jobs that gave them wealth invested funding for opioids. They got richer as we got hooked and their peers wrote more prescriptions than a pharmacy could fill.

Personal accountability is a thing... and unironically the first step in recovering from psychological addiction... It's no one's fault if you're an addict, but yourself... No on can make you stop also, but yourself. Blame shifting does not solve addiction

This is tied to Big Rehab and Suboxone profiteers trying to funnel legitimate pain patients into their services for profit and their has been corruption in the CDC in 2016, FDA and misuse of the DEA to enforce these policies. Ty for mentioning this. I have MS with chronic debilitating nerve pain. Opioids used to give me some semblance of a normal life. Now because of folks using them to get high my meds were cut to next to nothing, I sit or lay down most days all day. It’s incredibly difficult to take a shower etc etc. No quality of life left at all. Thanks a lot for abusing a medication that used to help me be functioning member in society. Addicts will get heroine, people like me just suffer in a loop of pain.

‘In 2008. I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease(L4-L5) and epilepsy. That began a whole slew of different kinds of pain pills, injections, doctors’ appointments and pharmacies. I noticed I started becoming addicted to pain pills after I lost my house and my job in 2009 due to my health issues. That and issues going on in my home life slammed me into a deep depression. From then on I couldn’t function without a pill. I’d be so out of it for 2 weeks out of the month because my 30 day supply would only last me a couple of weeks. When I wasn’t pilled up, I stayed in bed and only did the bare minimum in life until my next doctor’s appointment. My pill cocktail was Oxycodone, MS Contin, Soma, Klonopin and fioricet.’ ‘I was fired from my pain management clinic in April 2019 because I didn’t show up for a per contract pill count. I knew I was 11 pills short so I just didn’t show up! From May to June my kid’s father came out here for my second daughter’s graduation. I had already gone through detox and I think he helped occupy my mind. My plan was once we dropped him off at the airport, I was going to start looking for another doctor. Instead I watched Leaf of Faith, a movie about kr@tom, on Netflix on June 25th 2019. I learned that kr@tom is a Southeast Asian herb that many are using for pain relief and to treat addiction.’ ‘The very next day I went to the local smoke shop and bought some Kr@tom. And here I am today, sober and staying sober because of kr@tom and w33d! Kr@tom not only brings my pain level from a 10 to a 3, it also stops the opioid cravings and elevates my mood along with the w33d. I am a brand-new version of the old me. I am a thriving and functioning mother and member of society again. Kr@tom and w33d are the tools I need for sobriety. In all honesty, I am still amazed that I’m alive today. If you think Kr@tom doesn’t work, then by all means ask me how I am clean, sitting here typing this out. I and millions of others are living, breathing proof that kr@tom works! Kr@tom is FREEDOM, kr@tom is LIFE!’
