There's really only one silver lining, and that's at least with family vlogs there isn't a team of producers/directors/etc. since so often that leads to abuse and exploitation of a different kind. That said. At least film or TV stars could like... go home? Have off time? Maybe not much, but there was some sense of separation. With vlogging, the home IS the stage. Very Truman Show-esque. Scary stuff.

Fame is traumatic. It's like being in an abusive relationship with millions of people at once. You're always being watched, always being analyzed, and you never know whether you are going to be praised to the high heavens or torn to shreds. That's something that completely fractures your sense of identity, self-worth and security. I'm glad people are starting to reevaluate celebrity culture, because it's been going on for way too long.

I worked as an extra on What I like about you, and Amanda was super cool. As an extra on set, you often get treated as a second-class citizen, it's not the best, so when big-name stars are really nice and friendly, they stand out because many of them ignore the fact that you are even there. I was tired on that set, and I found a spot behind the set that was sort of hidden, laying down on a roll of carpet; she saw me, walked over to me, and laughed she said "mind if I join you" I said, " don't you have a trailer with an actual bed?" She said "yeah but they can find me there" we laughed and chatted a bit more then she had to go. I didn't find her to be cold at all she was nice, funny, and down to earth. As a celebrity if you have one off day you run to the tabloids and those stories are not representative of who you are it's one day, one encounter. It's dehumanizing to treat people like that, people are allowed to have days where they don't feel like chatting it up, or maybe they don't mesh with you so what it's still not who they are as a person.

its crazy because I grew up doing commercials and modeling and my mom would turn down things and later told me how they were creeps. I was actually offered a job at nickelodeon during the time the Amanda show was at full force. I remember going to the auditions and my mom promptly walking me out after learning their "rules"- i.e them not wanting the parents there and wanting me to act out inappropriate things and whatever was in the contract. Did that argument affect your relationship with your dad longer term? I remember one time my dad went on a rant after seeing Jon Benet Ramsey on the cover of a tabloid in the grocery checkout. Looking back, he (probably? hopefully??) just thought it was inappropriate and offensive for the publisher to profit off her murder, but the way he was ranting seemed directed at Jon Benet personally. Like he was angry at her. Like even after her death, even at such a young age, somehow she was responsible. Like she asked to be dressed up and photographed, like she tried to get on the cover of a magazine for attention or something I was too young to understand and I had no idea who the little girl was, but all I knew was that my dad was so angry that it scared me and it shook my trust in him. It felt like slut shaming, even though I didn't know that term at the time. i remember my daughter was obsessed with Amanda as a young teen. Their physical similarities were striking, so much so, that "Amanda" became my daughter's nickname at school. What did strike me about watching her on TV was her overly hyper manic like speech and actions.... Way more than ADHD. I wondered if her "handlers" were pumping her with "stimulants" to keep her energetic and skinny. Then, the later reports of her bizarre behavior and appearance, I wondered if that earlier behavior was just a warning of a "looming" mental illness. Often, young sufferers will try to self-medicate, so her drug and alcohol abuse was not surprising. I really feel for her, because if she has either Bi-polar or Schizophrenia (or some other co-morbidity, her life will be an endless struggle to find some balance, adding in possible PTSD from her parent's control and the Hollywood snakes! 🐍 I truly hope she is able to access the "right" people in her life that want to help, not exploit!

Just like Amy Winehouse. Granted, she had issues, but she was an 18 yr old kid that turned into a rich & famous recording artist, OVERNIGHT. She got her own apt, $$$, and all that comes with fame & fortune, but no one to guide her & help teach her to stay on the right track. Amanda did have good supportive parents, it seems, but they were clueless on how to handle her after she grew up & started partying. Also like Amy, Amanda most definitely had issues beforehand, as well, and when they started to surface, her parents were gobsmacked. The pappos do not help the situation, either. Camping out outside Amys house all day & night, being overly critical of her looks. She had bulimia/body issues. Amanda had issues as well. Amanda had mental health issues before TV! Add her parents who thought they were doing the right thing by controlling career to being on a set as a young girl with no one protecting you! There’s no doubt in my mind that Dan mishandled Amanda sexually, emotionally and physically! Think, her dad is so controlling but couldn’t control her safety on set? Imagine what she was thinking, imagine thinking I’d rather stay on set and get abused then go home to my controlling parents! Another thing, as parents it’s okay to be controlling and strict to a DEGREE! Once your kids become a certain age you HAVE TO let them make mistakes so they can learn! You can’t control their every decision and move in life! Amanda would have made certain choices regardless that’s what teens do! Her decision were just public’ it’s sad that all of the cameras were in her face when she jist wanted peace! That drive anyone mad!!

As someone who works with many conserved people and their families, I find it strange that these people can get conservatorships so easily over people that seem to be very borderline. I have families that very obviously need conservatorships that struggle getting them put in place, yet a celebrity has a mental illness and makes a few bad choices can suddenly be conserved? Obviously I don’t know her entire situation, but with the information we do have it would seem that these celebrities’ families are taking advantage of conservatorships to control their lives and money, not to protect the conserved person.

I’m a psychiatric nurse working in Belgium. About conservatorships, the laws here are a bit different but we have something similair called ‘bewindvoering over persoon en goederen’. We always advice that the bewindvoerder or conservator is someone who is not related and does not have any financial benefit over the decisions, like a lawyer. Also the decision is temorary and needs to be re-evaluated at certain times. So it’s not in place any longer than absolutely necessary. Wow that was hard to say in english 🤣

I remember around the "Big Fat Liar" era, the few years AFTER that , my mom and I had a conversation about how all the other child stars at grew up along with Lindsay Lohan, etc , saying "it's so weird, but good, how Amanda Bynes hasn't gone through this. See, child stars can be okay." Then within the next few years .... we were proven SO wrong. It takes different times for everyone and just because someone can seemingly go through most of their life "looking fine" , doesn't mean that pain , that trauma , that awful suffering.....isn't there. And it broke my heart seeing her go through this. Me and my stepsister LOVED the Amanda show and reenacted that "moody's point" segment all the time! 😅 I want nothing but peace for this poor girl , poor woman. I almost teared up watching this one. Normally I would shrug off a celebrity breakdown but for some reason this one really hit home for me, especially when you mentioned her taking time off to discover herself. I feel like child actors and otherwise famous children/teens, in some form or fashion, are robbed of their childhood and critical developing years because they spend so much of their time pretending to be someone else through their characters that they literally don't have time to discover who they are. All they know is to be what the public wants, which is a good wholesome funny kid. Stage parents can be some of the most awful people because they let their greed overtake them and then they exploit the poor kids. Don't stop covering former child stars, for the love of God. People like Alyson Stoner are crucial in taking down the horror that is Hollywood and we need stuff like this covered!

I have an MA in Psychology. Although I am not a doctor, it’s clear to see that Amanda is having a psychotic break. Although not always permanent, this can happen when the mind is overstimulated and doesn’t have time to process. All of her life Amanda’s needs and desires have been pushed aside. Despite her compliance, she probably learned that she is accepted as long as she performs. That will kill anyone’s soul. She probably felt she was not worthy of love and to determine her own future. I feel for her and hope she continues treatment. Investing in your mental health is the greatest gift you can give yourself.

If you don't know or work with Amanda, don't make assumptions on her mental state. It's disrespectful to people that live with mental health challenges when people make assumptions and label us, rather than to just listen to us and respect us. Yes, investing in mental health is vitally important. As is respecting those of us that live with mental health distress or challenges.

I think it's fair to give your opinion (everyone has that right) but it's not cool to present it as truth. Since you've studied mental health you have even more of a responsibility than other people to make it very clear it's only your opinion & shouldn't be taken as factual information or as a diagnosis of any kind. You really should include a disclaimer like "This is solely my opinion based on the small amount of information I've seen online. I do have my MA in this field BUT I am not diagnosing her, nor could I diagnose her. She is not my patient. It is unethical and dangerous to present my personal opinion as fact."

I get it; I studied medicine so I have more input on certain subjects. However, there are still ethical guidelines to follow even if you aren't a clinician. ETA: There's also just an understanding of basic respect and boundaries that should be followed. Especially when speaking about real people. If you want to speak about a certain condition, I think you should say "someone experiencing this might feel..." instead of "Amanda probably feels..." That's my two cents.

I actually try not to watch your video, but my ex GF sent me few days back (we were on a base of full understanding, dunworri about that), and also due to I know practically everything in your vid already (after I finished watching it), and it puts me back in in the good old days, the news I got from my friend about her (I still have a rend from webboard talking about Amanda from 17 years ago and she still sends me about Amanda's news from time to time) and it still tears me to hear all of this again. You made this video beautiful, don't get me wrong, but it still tears me inside to hear all of this story again, to reminiscing what she'd been through, and the results from all of this. Now I'm not an American, and the reason I speak in West Coast accent is totally because of Amanda solely. She was my total childhood, the reason I try to be able to speak English, and I still sad of what happened to her. Every now and then I still try to isolated myself in reaching her news because I might be broken again, and god this vid is a time machine I try not to touch but still taking risks.

It’s not a linear process. As an addict (in recovery) I’ve learned this lesson over and over. It’s really hard for some to grasp that an addict cannot simply “get better and stay better”. 💫

Like I'm sorry but even if she was i.e "Sally" next door running over a person drunk, I'd still hate their guts for all eternity. I'm an adult who has done substances and not once I went behind a wheel drunk. (I'm very mentally ill, as well.) Just like people say cheating or other types of violence is a mistake.
