How Alternative Rock Saved Power Pop: The 90s Power Pop Revival
Power pop is a genre that combines catchy melodies, crunchy guitars, and 60s influences. It emerged in the 1970s, but faded from the mainstream in the 80s. However, in the 90s, a new wave of power pop bands emerged, influenced by both the classic power pop sound and the alternative rock scene. These bands updated the power pop formula for a new generation of listeners, and gained critical acclaim and commercial success.
In this video, I will explore how power pop experienced a revival in the 90s, thanks to alternative rock bands like Weezer, Teenage Fanclub, Velvet Crush, and Material Issue.

The 90's was my generation and the early to mid period was a glorious time for loud noisy guitar rock, but it was also when I discovered this genre they kept calling "power pop" after the reissues of the Big Star albums on CD. My favourite artist in that genre would Matthew Sweet, he's recorded three or four classic albums and has remained consistently a great songwriter. He's my vote for a full video. Cheers!

Overwhelming Colorfast -- Their s/t debut is one of my favorite releases of the 90s. Produced by Butch Vig it's power pop with a slightly grungy/punky veneer. It's one of those 'lost' albums that deserves a lot more attention. The Chevelles -- Check out the compilation 'At Second Glace' for an excellent slice of this Australian band's power pop output. Really good stuff.

Oh man...I admit I had totally forgotten about that band, but just listened to a couple tracks off their debut and it's so great...thanks for that! I was just introduced to The Chevelles not that long ago, as well...I think their album Girl God is awesome! Thanks for watching!

Why Sloan isn’t a household name and one of the biggest bands on the planet, I’ll never know. They have risen to the top of my favorite bands list, second only to the Beatles imo. After all these years and many albums they are still putting out consistently great material. Their newest album, “Steady”, is my top rated album for 2022. I wish they would get out of Canada more often and come to Portland, Oregon so I can see them live! Lots of other good bands in this video as well, thanks for making it. 😎

Thank you! Totally agree...I'm just amazed at how they have consistently put out great albums (over such a long period, too!) They have a big following here, but nowhere near where it should be. Hope to see them live one of these days, as well! Thanks!!

Excellent compilation & vid. You hit all the greats IMO as well as the listing bands like Ride towards the end. Really sad re Jim Ellison. Saw the Ish open for the Pretenders twice in ‘94. Temple Theatre in Tacoma & Commodore Ballroom in B.C. Stellar performances. Wish Jim could have rode out that rough patch. He is sorely missed. On a lighter note, so cool that you mentioned Velvet Crush & Redd Kross. Both bands seem to get overlooked often. Lots of cross pollination with Matthew Sweet & VC.

@@jimmytrainor5512 Thank you! I really appreciate your kind words. It would be a stretch to say I know Braden, but, funny story (and maybe TMI) when we worked together, we introduced ourselves because we always seemed to end up in the restroom on the same schedule...got awkward, so we thought we should at least know each other's names. 🤣

@@poprocksradio Great!! Looking forward to what you create - by the way, I love listening to the Posies too, Material Issue's song "Diane" has some of my favorite lyrics: "Diane's got everything, a helicopter and a submarine" as does "Suddenly Mary" by the Posies: "Suddenly Mary fell in the water, were I not weary, I would have caught her"
