I remember the hate Volk was getting before the Ortega fight and how fast that changed after it. One of the greatest fights I’ve ever watched and that third round has to be the most insane round of all time. So glad I get to watch this guy multiple times a year

That Ortega fight changed everything. Showed true heart of a champion and proved he didn’t fluke his way to a title. The TKZ fight was an utter dismantling. His trilogy with Max shut the door on the featherweight GOAT debate. And his razor close fight with Islam superseded Burns loss against Khamzat as the biggest raise of stock in a loss. Brilliant video TFB

@@dayforit1750 its not all about age. Aldo defended his belt since he was 22-28 against only elite competition then going into the volkanovski fight he was 2-2 since losing his championship. Obviously the amount of fights he had and getting knocked out in seconds after going unbeaten for a decade then going on to lose half your fights after word is gonna change you physically and mentally

what's most impressive about how Volk dispatched Yair, is that we know how good Yair is, we saw what he did to Emmett, we saw how he made Max Holloway of all people, start wrestling, on top of all the other crazy flashy things he's been able to do through his career, so we knew going in, just how dangerous and elite the guy really is, but in there with Volk, he didn't even look like he belonged, and that same thing happened to Max the third time they fought, he made the other guy in FW GOAT contention look like he didn't belong either, so yeah, Volk is absolutely, without a question FW GOAT, and rightfully #1 P4P fighter in the world right now

Not saying I disagree about how great Volk is, but acting like him dominating Yair was unexpected or surprising is pretty disingenuous. Volk was a terrible matchup for Yair, and the blueprint to beat him was laid out years ago by Frankie Edgar and hasn't changed. Volk followed it precisely for the first two rounds before putting him away in the 3rd, which wasn't surprising since his striking is also great, and Yair is remarkably less dangerous when the threat of all his crazy spinning and jumping strikes gets taken away due to the threat of being taken down. If he can do the same thing to Topuria, that will be much, much more impressive.

It’s actually incredibly impressive how good volk looked after dropping back down pretty soon after his lw fight. His team are the best for game plans and nutrition imo

One thing I particularly like about this competition is that Aldo and Max both started young enough for all three reigns to overlap. All three fought each other, and though by the time Volk fought Aldo, Aldo was clearly past his prime, they are all in overlapping generations, so these aren't fantasy comparisons.

I think its abit unfair to say Aldo was clearly past his prime, cause it kinda makes it seem like he was bad. He was still only 30 and beating top ten guys rather consistently when he fought Volk.

Aldo only got better. When he retired, he was the best he'd ever been. The meta changed, and he became more "beatable" as it did.

IMO Volk is currently the featherweight GOAT. He’s beaten the two previous GOATs, one three times, and beaten the best of the division. The fighters at the top today are better than the top fighters of Aldo’s days, so with a heightened level of competition comes a lower bar for the number of opponents. That’s why Volk doesn’t need to surpass Aldo’s title streak to be the GOAT.

I defended Volk after the first and 2nd Holloway fights. He didn't need it, obviously, since he shut everyone else up in the 3rd fight with Holloway but I felt vindicated finally. Then everyone forgot just how dominant he looked and picked Makhachev over him. I picked him again and I honestly believe he should have won that fight. Then he dismantled Rodriguez and he'll do the same to Topuria. Volk IS the 145-pound GOAT. The guys he's facing are absolute axe murderers compared to the guys Aldo contended with and he beat Aldo as well.

I remember being so pissed that Max lost in the 2nd fight. Then I saw the third, and I have to say, Volkanovski is one of my absolute favorite fighters now. He convinced me. He convinced just about everyone. And he's going to convince Islam to go to sleep in Abu Dhabi.

Maybe it's cause of recency bias but I think people are counting out Aldo too soon. People forget he still had a solid respectable career after the McGregor ko, not to mention his decade of pure dominance beforehand. If Volk can defend again against Ilia or beat Islam in the rematch I'll finally give Volk the FW goat status but I'm barely sticking with Aldo for now.

I don't agree with that at all. Aldo beating prime Frankie Edgar alone renders any conversation about strength of schedule pretty much moot. Add in the wins over prime Brown, Faber, and Mendes, and he ran through *_the_* who's who at FW at the time. Consider the level of competition Volk has faced, and you'll see that, aside from Max, who beat him when he was quite past his prime, his title defenses have been against Ortega, who a prime Aldo would almost assuredly finish, KZ, who Aldo *_did_* finish back in his prime, and Yair, who Aldo would also beat with ease. I also have to laugh when you say Max beats almost everyone Aldo fought with ease, because in every instance where they have a common opponent (who didn't beat them, as Conor and Volk did), Aldo fought and beat them when they were younger and decidedly more dangerous, with the lone exception of Jeremy Stephens, who I don't think you'll disagree Aldo also would've easily beaten in his prime.
