How Alexander Masterminded the Greatest Campaign | Alexander The Great

Alexander had just led one of the greatest campaigns in human history, winning victory after victory, but what stood in front of Alexander now was to be his toughest campaign yet. As he invaded central Asia and India, where his tactical brilliance would be put to the test and his army would face giants the likes of which the Greeks had never seen.

I'd like to know how were war elephants used in battle by indians - there seem to be many explanation, ie. a charge, close support of infantry, protection of flanks, but nothing specific.

I am not well versed in Indian warfare but from what I have seen they were generally used for their ability to prevent an enemy charge or to charge themselves and disrupt the enemy line allowing their infantry to have an easier time. This was seen in the battle of the Hydaspes where Porus attempted to use them to try and disrupt the Macedonian Phalanx. Probably hoping this would allow his infantry to be able to get into close combat against the disorganized Phalanx, which then would be more easily defeated. But the Macedonian's ability to repulse the elephants effectively would backfire on Porus as they would retreat through his own line and completely disorganize his infantry.
