My philosophy when it comes to offsides is if a linesman or the VAR cannot determine a player to be offsides visually, then the striker should not be penalized for being offsides. The purpose of the offside rule is to ensure that a player does not have an unfair advantage and if the "unfair advantage" cannot be noticed by the linesman or by a video assistant referee looking at a camera, then did the striker really get an advantage?

Thanks for the informative video. The Messi goal in the final brought me here. Even though the the offside flag was raised the referee's watch was flashing green. I needed to know more.

Thanks for stopping by, Larry. When the ball crosses the goal line the referee gets a signal via the watch indicating if the entire ball is over the line. That happens even if the assistant raises the flag or before the VAR intervenes.

Adidas makes the ball with the IMU sensor. Not sure who makes the cameras. FIFA has 12 and uefa uses 10. It’s also not clear to me who wrote the code. FIFA says the work with various partners… much of this comes from their working group on tech innovation.

The premier league owners voted against semi-automated offside. Even without SAOT, what happened to Diaz should not have happened.
