    Given the fact that this game is the first in the series and was done in '07, none the less, I'm not too surprised but also not too disappointed by your review of this particular game. I'd like to see how you rate a newer game like Origins or Odyssey. Ubisoft probably had NO IDEA if this was going to take off or not. Flash forward 13 years and just as many games later, and now we have a saga that would put Final Fantasy to shame. I've always been really bored with history due to the way its taught in American schools (I don't learn well from a textbook that's probably ultimately only going to include the history that the person who wrote the book WANTS you to know). But the way Assassin's Creed tells history (albeit with a lot of fictional liberties) got me excited about history. I always learn history better when it's told as a story. Story is in the word after all. But I've never seen Assassin's Creed as a way to learn about history from an accuracy standpoint, more like a reason to get excited about it and as a way to explore places I can't afford to go to IRL. And while cities in AC might not always be FULLY historically accurate or authentic to the time they're portraying, I'll never get tired of climbing the Dome of the Rock, or the Pyramids of Giza, or Big Ben, or Notre Dame. And speaking of Notre Dame, it's also very surreal that while we've lost one of the most important historical pieces of architecture (at least only for now hopefully), Notre Dame is still preserved within the game coding of Assassin's Creed Unity, one of the games in the franchise that fans largely see as unneeded and a failure. Not only that, AC: U is the first game of the series to feature the ability to go inside certain buildings at will. Instead of buildings being obstacles, buildings are now part of the environment, open for you to freely explore. TLDR: Assassin's Creed isn't a tour of history, it's a sneak peek, a demo, that gets you excited for the finished product: visiting these places IRL! And because of that alone, I will always tell people that Assassin's Creed is at least worth a try.

    Nice video but I would like to point out some things about armour and combat that you mentioned. First at 5:23 you say that padded armour can be easily be cut and pierced by swords, however that is incorrect, well made gambeson with enough layers of linen can be quite difficult to cut or pierce. Around 5:40 you say that a sharp enough sword can cut through mail armour but that is just wrong, you can't cut through steel, no matter how hard you tried you can't cut through steel, you could maybe break the chains but with proper riveted mail armour it's nearly impossible to just try to slash and break the chains, also the blade of a sword won't just crack if it is too sharp, it might bend, it might get blunted but not just simply crack. Here's a video that discusses more about mail armour kzread.info/dash/bejne/iKh-tZOGqsyvaZs.html . Also even trying to stab mail armour it would still be difficult to get through it, here's a test by Skallagrim kzread.info/dash/bejne/q5iexqSNhpvAkrw.html . At around 7:03 (I think you were talking about swords, if I misunderstood then I'd like to apologise) I want to say that swords never got heavier or less sharp, there were some bigger swords but not all were, and the term "long two-handed slightly sharpened clubs" is just nonesense. Swords can never be compared to clubs, not a single properly made sword will weigh more that 2 kg (and this is quite heavy for a sword, maybe just a few swords passed over 2 kg), a sword is supposed to be light and agile, even large greatswords were like this. Why were polearms used over swords in the middle ages? Because the sword was a backup weapon, not a primary one, just like a handgun in today's combat. And about the combat it would've been much faster (and as I said a sword is very light and agile), you can check this video to just see how fighting with swords would've happend, not just simple swings but actual tehniques at least for trained swordsmem kzread.info/dash/bejne/daOWlayGndfJpLw.html P.S. sorry for this really long comment but I just wanted to talk about some things in the video which were wrong.

  • @HistoryGameV

    @HistoryGameV

    Thank you for this excellent comment! As I said the majority of what I said comes from secondary sources (besides one primary source, the Walpurgis Fechtbuch). Now, to clear a few things up that either you or me misunderstood or worded wrongly. For the padded armour, I meant it is far easier to cut or pierce than mail or plate armour. For "cutting" through mail, you are correct, I used the wrong words. What I meant was break the chains. For cracking, I meant blunting. For stabbing through mail, as Skallagrim himself points out at the end of his video, there are many, many accounts from very different sources that state very clearly that people were stabbed through mail with swords. You might have to take into account the wildly varying quality of mail armour in the Middle Ages, especially when worn by sergeants and not nobles. As you might notice I differ between light and heavy mail armour during the video, meaning the difference in quality and tightness of the mail. A knight would most certainly have worn far higher quality armour than his troops. For the swords, you might have misunterstood about which timeframe I talked. Or maybe I should have told you what I meant more precisely. Archaeologists have noticed that very early medieval swords, meaning 700-900CE, were largely made for cutting and slashing at the enemy, with a very sharp blade. The more the mail armour developed, the less sharper the blade became, and the longer and slimmer the swords got (see the second long sword Skallagrim uses). With the rise of plate armour, you basically get two different sword types: Long and broad swords worn as a backup weapon to a heavy polearm, and the long (1,80-2,20m), heavy, not very sharp bastard and bihand swords (especially used by late medieval heavy infantry well into the Thirty Years War). Those are the "slightly sharpened clubs" that I referred to...with a bit of exaggeration, granted.^^ Thank you for the very long comment, you showed me quite a few points I should improve about in the future!

  • @alinalexandru2466

    @alinalexandru2466

    Thank you for the reply. This has cleared up some things. Though I'd like to add for stabbing through mail armour yes depending on the quality it could be done, but riveted mail is still quite strong, and since it was used for so long and by many nations it must've been effective even the lower quality ones. Yes there are depictions of mail armour being pierced or cut by swords but those could also be exaggerated depictions as there are also depictions of swords cutting straight through helmets. I believe that mail armour was pierced more by lances and spears than swords in combat. For swords I thought that you meant swords got heavier and heavier until they were more like "slightly sharpened clubs" as in unwieldy and barely sharp. Anyway thank you again for the reply.

    Its a shame that some aspect of Assassin's Creed games are done so well, while others are done shockingly badly, party because they are Ubisoft games, and all Ubisoft games play and feel the same, with too many pointless busy-work map markers and collectibles. I think it doesn't do them full justice just to say "not verified", you could make 4 or 5 diferent scores a game can get depending on their accuracy. This could range from not verified, not verified but some historical elements, almost verified, and fully verified. Cod 5 for example could have had a score of almost verified.
