About 45 years ago my grandmother had a very elderly lady living next door who had a rocker a lot like this one and a leg was broken. She asked if I could repair it for her and I did. When she passed I tried to buy it from her daughter but could not. It unfortunately was lost in a house fire. My first project that became my hobby for life. If I was only as good as you are. Thank you for bringing back that great memory and thank you for sharing.👍

@Trena~ I really love the color the customer chose for the new finish. Elm has such a beautiful grain pattern! Dutch Elm Disease took a huge toll on the Elm tree population in the midwest, so unfortunately it's very rare to find it in furniture here. It was a delight to watch you refinish this lovely rocker! CHEERS TO YOU my friend! ~~Christy~~

Lots of work just to place an almost opaque paint on it. A nice light stain to show the wood after all that work would have been preferred.

I disagree with you, but how boring would the world be if everyone agreed with everyone else? The color I really didn't (and still don't) is that odd color of green that was popular in the late '60s and into the '70s. My stepmother used to "antique" furniture, and that green was part of it. Of course older people liked shag carpet and fake paneled walls, too, so there you have it.

I agree. But it is a matter of personal preference. I understand the driftwood look is popular but this chair isn’t remotely driftwood looking. I guess I’ve seen far too many on front porches of country homes and have a certain idea of what they should look like 😂 As a matter of fact, I just remembered I have one very much like it out in a barn that I should probably bring in and refinish.😂

it's a beauty, Canadian Classic ! The tones match so much of what is popular here on the west coast. Reminds me of ash, a wood we worked with to make English long bows for one of my sons classes when he was about 11 or so. All the boys loved laminating ash and walnut, then analine dye to make each one unique. The grain in the ash is simliar, warm and wonderful tones as well. Thanks for all the wonderful tips and tricks. Prefloating the stain with varsol ,,

Trena, Thanks to you and Thomas Johnson I was able to save a precious keepsake that had broken, a glass paperweight with a picture on my daughter when she was 4. I had puzzled for a couple years about how to fix it without destroying the photo. Finally I thought about you and Tom using heat guns to loosen glue. It worked perfectly! Slowly removing the photo, I was then able to move it to a replacement paper weight. Thank you so much! ❤️

i am glad to see i am not the only one still using lacquer as a finish. i tend to use lacquer or shellac on 90% of what i make. i just love the look of it and the way it wears. i found that the oil finishes tend to look dull and dirty very quickly and poly just looks to plastic. again, marvelous work.

As you began to remove the paint, I thought, "Oh, oak." Then as you cleaned off the seat, explaining there was still red pigment in the wood, I thought, "Oh, now I see. That's such lovely walnut." And once the sanding had lightened up the wood, I thought, "Hmm. I like it but I have no idea what wood that is." So interesting. Thanks.

At first I wasn’t sure about the gray stain but it grew on me! Well done! It’s like seeing the grain through a misty fog.

I didn’t think I would like that stain on that very traditional rocker, but it’s beautiful. Your work is beautiful. ❤
