How a wedding dress is made by Caroline Arthur

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A short film showing the process of making a bridal gown from sketching the design, through selecting materials, making the pattern, cutting the silk and lace, sewing it all together and adding the final details. Set in the beautiful oak framed studio of Couture Designer Dressmaker Caroline Arthur, in Surrey, where she also sees Brides-to-be for their fittings, and creates their individual gowns. The film reflects the calm, natural atmosphere of the studio, and Caroline's professional but relaxed approach. www.carolinearthur.com

    Thanks Emily...you're not wrong. And do you know what, even after nearly 20 years of doing this, it never gets boring. Every bride is different, every dress, every body, every fabric. I can recommend it as a profession! Thanks for your comment, have a good day x

    Have to admit I do use a cutting table for my real bride's gowns, but for the film, I wanted to show how I started, and the fact you don't need fancy kit to make something beautiful :) Thanks for your lovely comment xx

    This is so wonderful to watch! In college we have not learned how to make a pattern from draping on the stand yet, we make our patterns on pattern paper, make our toilles from calico and fit it to the stand, re-adjust our patterns equally and make another toille.. and then our finished garment. It seems so much longer than what you've done, can you explain to me how you drape on the stand and then use the calico for patterns? Do mark in the add seam allowance before taking it off the stand or on the main fabric? Thank you!

  • @CarolineArthurBridal

    @CarolineArthurBridal

    Christian Iannelli Thanks Christian - so pleased to hear you're working on this kind of thing and I think there is a HUGE amount of value in doing it the way you describe, even though at the time it feels very repetitive. I was taught to make patterns this way at the London College of Fashion, and found it suited my way of working. If you google search " pattern making by draping", you'll find loads of short films showing how to do it, although I suspect from the enthusiasm of your tone, you may be the sort of person who just works it out for themselves!! I use the draping process to help me create the shape of the garment and the fit all at the same time, and find it easiest to add the seam allowances once I've taken the toile off the stand, so it is 100% accurate. In practise though, everything needs a tweak once it's stitched, so on the stand, I concentrate more on making sure the symmetry, shape and fit is as good as poss. The film I made wasn't long enough to really clearly show the method, but I intended it to be more an interesting and hopefully beautiful thing to watch, rather than being instructional. What are you working on at the moment? C x

    Caroline Arthur Thank you Caroline for you're reply! Its so nice to see how you work in this short film, its quite motivational! I suspected adding the S/A off the stand was more practical. Thank you for the great tips! Please do make more videos! They are wonderful and interesting. I'm currently studying fashion in Griffith College, Dublin. Since it is now summer, I do not have anything to work on, but I want to keep learning and have a more familiar handle on draping for when I return. I mean why not, I have all of summer to learn something! This year we had a skirt and a dress to create and next year we will have a 3 outfit, mini collection to create, so time management and being able to create my designs more accurate, quicker is something I hope to achieve!

    +HeavenNosMe Gaither Hi and sorry for slow reply. I would suggest to take the pattern from it and look into adding godets (triangles of fabric to increase the circumference of the hem)...really sorry, bit tricky to explain further without being sat in the room with you and the dress! If you look up "copying a dress pattern" and "insert a godet into a dress" on google, you should find enough info to get started. Lovely idea...best of luck! x

    HeavenNosMe Gaither if you can find a fabric in the exact same colour you could make a straight cut mermaid skirt. But that would of cause depend on the style of the dress and the materials

    Thanks for your comment, Shara... my tip would be to go to your local fabric shop, they should have a catalogue of paper patterns for you to choose a wedding dress you like (just as a practise), buy any fabric you can from the remnant pile, and just give it a go! Once you start, I hope you won't stop :) Also, you should be able to find part time sewing classes near to you, but I'm a great fan of "giving it a go" on your own first, to see if it sticks. Good luck - let me know how you get on xx
