How A Traditional Mezban Feeds 40,000 People In Chittagong, Bangladesh | Big Batches | Insider Food
The ultimate communal feast for birthdays, marriages, religious celebrations, and death anniversaries in Chittagong, Bangladesh, is a Mezban, locally known as a Mejjan.
The beef-centric meal, which is eaten by hand, is always free and open to the public. Most of the dishes served at a Mezban can be traced back to the 16th-century Mughal Empire, which first brought the recipes to the region.
We visited Chittagong to see how a Mezban is prepared for 40,000 people.

How A Traditional Mezban Feeds 40,000 People In Chittagong, Bangladesh | Big Batches | Insider Food

My mom is form Chittagong and 5 years ago for my maternal grandparents death anniversary they held a mezban. I remember going frantically from home to the venue and back again, but still having a lot of fun. Also Mezban can be held anytime by anyone for literally anything especially in Chittagong it's main purpose is bringing friends, family & community together just to have a good time.

It's a disgusting culture that should be abolished. Death should be mourned not celebrated with feast. I am from Chittagong too

@@parthaprotimbarua603 You are the *only real* disgusting one here, a true *bigot* . Every culture in the world has its own take on death, its own philosophy. These are mainly Bengali Muslim people. Like most people, they too grieve and mourn the loss of loved ones, but then as Muslims they also believe this life on earth is NOT the end of the story of life, rather it's merely a brief temporary sojourn and death ushers us into the beginning of the eternity of true life, the "afterlife" where Man will meet his/her maker in unbounded happiness, in the fulfillment of his true existence. So there is nothing really to be sorry about death which is merely a transition from transience to permanence of existence, a spiritual liberation and freedom. If you take this bigger picture into account, people should be happy about it instead, this natural consequence of earthly life should be "celebrated" really. Now, everybody in the earth may not share this belief or perspective, although many do both muslims and non-muslims, but not recognizing other people's perspective (of billions and billions of people for that matter, irrespective of religion or culture) on their own life and death, the diversity of human culture and perspectives, and calling them *"disgusting"* for it or for being different from you, is really *_disgustingly and shockingly barbaric!!!_*

@@parthaprotimbarua603 Every culture around the world holds its unique perspective on death and its own philosophy surrounding it. Here, we're mainly discussing the beliefs of Bengali Muslim people. Like most individuals, they also experience grief and mourning upon losing loved ones. However, as Muslims, they view life on earth not as the end of the story, but rather as a temporary sojourn. According to their beliefs, death marks the beginning of an eternity, where individuals meet their maker in boundless happiness, fulfilling their true existence in the afterlife. Therefore, they see death not as something to mourn, but as a transition from transience to permanence, a spiritual liberation and freedom. When considering this broader perspective, one might argue that death, as a natural consequence of earthly life, should be celebrated. It's essential to recognize that not everyone on earth shares this belief or perspective. But dismissing or condemning others' beliefs as 'disgusting' simply because they differ from our own is not only *narrow-minded and bigoted* but also *_barbaric,_* given the vast diversity of human culture and perspectives on life and death. _This kind of barbarism is what really needs to be abolished from the world!!!_

Technically, all the Indian restaurants in the UK and north america have Bangladeshi food, since it is mostly from Bangladesh that all these immigrants from the Indian subcontinent came. So you can be in peace knowing that everyone is appreciating it without knowing it.

For starters no one gets food poisoning because it’s washed properly and cooked on very high heat and unlike the West everything is very very fresh and the chefs and cooks also constantly wash their hands there’s no chance of food poisoning, and to everyone saying nasty or whatever artisan breads in France are also made with bare hands.

Always amazes me how these people in countries that you would generally assume are not that rich, can just have feasts and feed 40,000 people. Do you have any kind of idea what kind of a bill that would be here in the United States to have to find other than you to house that many people and higher the chefs and buy all of the food? Of course their economy is a whole lot different than it's a community thing. The farmers donate cows and the gardeners donate veggies. In my mind that is what true communism is. Maybe the only payment the farmers ask for is a little bit of help in the fields when Harvest time comes around or something, and I'm sure there are plenty of fellow community members more than willing to help in that situation. Sometimes I kind of wish our country could exist like that. Not relying so much on wealth to purchase things and hire people but rely on the community and each other.
@MohammedKhaled-ju7gy

No farmers are donating anything here. People who want to host these events pay for the cows and vegetables. A 300 kilo cow costs on average 1700-2000$ in bd so you can do the math on rough estimates

@@MohammedKhaled-ju7gy S/he didn't meant that farmers donate cows for Mezban but perhaps s/he made a generalized comment of these communities and how they lives helping each other which is not the case for many communities around the world. it always amazes me how it's possible to make such portions of delicious food
Thanks for bringing up this beautiful part of Chatgaiya culture. Blessed to be a Chittagonian. ❤️
There're some Mezban arranged for 100,000 peoples by big community organizations. It's totally free for everyone, no farmer provided vegetables or cows, everything arranged by community groups. Most Mezban are arranged by family of the deceased person after a funeral service to feed everyone in community and it happens in smaller scale like for 300-2000 peoples. But now-a-days it arranged for every kind of occasions except for the weeding ceremony unlike mentioned in the video. Wedding meals are totally different.
