How A Tournament Tried To Stop The Greatest Gamer Of All Time
Ойындар
It makes sense for players to do whatever it takes to win against the best of the best, but what happens when tournament organizers start doing the same?
While it's practically unheard of, it has happened before. This is the tale of the AfreecaTV StarCraft League and Starcraft’s Final Boss, Lee Young Ho, better known as Flash.

Hello everyone, we wanted to apologize for the mispronunciation of Brood War and Afreeca in this video and will make sure something like this doesn’t slip through again.
@shivers222

This video seems a little disingenuous given these pronunciations since anyone who actually follows the scene would just intuitively know how they were pronounced. Also the ending left out flash's reign of random terror as other commenters mentioned, and as i understand he is currently out due to military service, not an overuse injury as the ending suggests. Anyways, I didn’t know about the map poll being engineered to be anti Terran and seeing flash’s determination to beat it was cool so thanks for teaching me about that!

@@shivers222 Only if you don't understand how such videos are made. The narrator is chosen for his narration skills (aka. his voice), not for his knowledge of what he is narrating. I would rather have a narrator with a great voice who might mispronounce a few words, than a SC fan with a terrible voice.
Another fun Brood War fact: At 3:08 the video mentions that FlaSh had RSI in his wrists. This severely affected his ability to play the Terran vs Zerg matchup which relies heavily on marines and medics, a fragile and APM intensive unit comp that requires a lot of quick and precise mouse movements. How did he solve this problem? He invented the 5 factory goliath build which revolves around the mechanical Goliaths, a much less demanding unit comp, and absolutely disrupted the meta and forced players to spend several ASL seasons figuring out how to counter his strategy. It was also an incredible gift for lesser-skilled players since the Terran vs Zerg matchup was widely considered the most mechanically difficult matchup in the game until FlaSh invented this new build.

"It was also an incredible gift for lesser-skilled players since the Terran vs Zerg matchup was widely considered the most mechanically difficult matchup in the game until FlaSh invented this new build." Stop with your bs. You either dont play starcraft at all, only watch it, or you have incredible bias to lie favoring terran. TvZ is always a favoured match up for T. Likewise, it's PvT, ZvP and the balance is a circle like this T>Z>P>T. This can be backed up by statistic of mu winrate from premier/major leagues. You can also tell it by being an average C or B rank lol ZvT is a mechanically difficult mu for Z because muta is the only viable opening at higher rank (at low ranks you can rush worker+basic units and probably still win). And micro muta is much more mechanic demand than micro MnM, due to their fragile body and shorter range against medic healing and huge dmg from stimpack. Z also lacks of options to survive until hive for defiler, leaving only muta. It's true that mech is easier to execute than MnM, but terran is not the one to complain here when zerg literally uses small, many units in all match up, not to mention lacking of viable range against siege tanks, or reliable AOE dmg against MnM until plague

Non SC players probably don't appreciate how it's a combination of creativity and speed. You need strategic thinking, some of which is pre-planned with build orders and once the game gets far enough along there's ALWAYS room to move faster and control things more finely, because there's so many things to control. LOL/dota is a simplification of SC. You have few things to do, so do them with excellence. In SC you have overwhelming things to do, so do as many good things as possible and decide on priorities in the moment, if you're faster than your opponent all the better.

Akshon Esports - you should make a video about FlaSh playing as Random too! It was an absolutely insane move: how FlaSh had to learn all 9 matchups in Starcraft, how the other pros had to learn the vs Random matchup and slowly realized that playing vs Random is a huge pain (since your opponent's race is unknown at the start of the match, playing vs Random is different than the other matchups), how FlaSh taunted everyone saying that winning with Terran was too easy and became boring for both him and viewers, and how FlaSh made his insane ASL run as a Random player for the first time ever in StarCraft's >20 year history

The level of prep of knowing every possibly tactic to use and deal with on all 3 races on the map pool is galaxy-brain stuff that really only Flash pulled off. How absurd it would have been if he managed to win that ASL Season as a random player.
This level of dominance is almost unheard of in any other E-sport. Its actually insane how big of a skill gap there is between this one player and his closest contemporaries. In Starcraft 2, you can bet on Serral, Reynor, Clem, Maru or Dark and still lose, for example. With Brood War, betting on Flash was just a guarantee.

He is dominating a dead game. The level of skill and competition post-2012 will never be the same as in 2009-2012. In Kespa era they lived in team bootcamp houses all the time, had coaches and dedicated practice partners. A player preparing a build order/strategy for a particular map would play hundreds of games with it, while his practice partner (usually an aspiring player who dreams to one day get into team roster) tries all kinds of build order against him to make sure he is ready for any scenario. BW will never reach the same skill level after 2012. All those ex-pro players just exploit the skill they gained pre 2012.

Dude, they had to do something. It was getting boring and people were getting upset that the other pros couldnt keep up.
It was never about the games.... it was always about the gamers stepping up.
Should have gone for the head.... They couldn't nerf Flash so they make life harder for all Terrans. The poor other Terrans xD
When I saw the video title I knew it had to be a Brood War player.
I love watching Brood Wars electronic sport game on AfricaTV
You talk about winnigs, but his salary was insane too. Starcraft players had 200k/yr salaries in 2000-2010, while other games were barely esport tier.
Great video.

Thanks!
you know you are good in a videogame when other pros nickname for you is God
Ultimate Weapon - that moniker of Flash I like the most: everyone was underdog against Flash either a team or individual player. When Flash had going to the stage everyone knew the it’s over for an opposition, no matter what the current score was. Fun times

He actually got that nickname from a previous opponent who was interviewed, he said no matter if Flash goes Bio (Marine, Medic, Tank) or Mech (Vulture, Tank, Goliath) he wins against the opposite match-up.

> Ultimate Weapon His last monicker, after being called the Ultimate Weapon, is 'God'.
lol they applied handicap against the man
Personally, I think the video missed the part where Flash won the 3rd place at ASL 10 **with random**. Most impressive.
This is awesome
Fun fact: Kang Min aka Nal_rA, one of the 3 kings even surprised that Flash (he was a middle schooler btw) dominates everyone else in KT team house, even top guns like Reach, Yellow and everyone else tries to take him down but they all lose 2-0 to Flash
bro went to military's service. he gone come back with a stronger wrist
LETS GO FLASH U CAN DO IT!!!!!
Imagine being so good to being compared to omnipotent that the real omnipotence (tournament organizers) had to acknowledge his existence through their direct manipulation of the rules (namely the rule of being impartial in all decisions)
Brood WAR. Just 1. For fuck's sake.
It took the best Protos against Terran Player AND a Map that puts Terrans at a disadvantage, to barely beat him 2:3? Yeah, hes the Goat.
i miss this era.... moletrap, diggity.. i could cry
I don't play StarCraft but this guy is godlike
id like to see video analyis explaining how maps favor certain races
fr, flash is the only crazy scbw player who would play random race and still win the game even if he gets rng into a bad race for the map in tournament

The fact that it's possible means that overall level of skill and competition in BW has fallen down to about 1999. Flash's achievements in 2009-2011 are more impressive than anything he wins today, because the competition was real back then.

@@sergeysmyshlyaev9716 true, the only exciting ones r just some small content creator competitions which they just randomly hold form time to time, as some still plays n has their old skills, some improved
It's insane how good flash is and they had to cripple Terran with the maps to stop him winning
its brood WAR.. Starcraft: Brood War. Hearing it called Brood Wars over and over made it sound like someones parent or grandparent talking about playing: "Marios" or "Zeldas" .. "Oh theyre down there playing the Zeldas.. They just love the Zeldas" (really this is just nitpicking / teasing.. its not that huge a deal) Other than that great job dude!
I remember the story when he was asked how he spends his free time and Flash response was: “I play other races.” Fcking chad
I'll watch any videos that you want to make about Flash!
Terran is a race that knows no lengths- but often causes wrist issues from all the skill
Ryu just can't catch a break huh 🤣😂
Kept saying brood warS.........like nail on chalkboard
My original nick in SC2 was RuFLaSH and im a terran player. Cant wait to see if he returns after his service.
I read about this guy when during LoL S3 and damn this was the og before Faker😊
No wonder this spunds so familier, its basically every korean manhua ive ever read.
BROOD WAR
i missed Jaedong
