Ooh I heard about this case. John was the one who screwed everything up (by using money unwisely and being cocky to peers) which resulted in a huge loss for money, so he came up with the plan to pretend that he is dead to get money. He did a lot of stupid things after that, and Anne was in a lot of pressure and guilt because of John. I forgot how they were caught but I can’t imagine much betrayal their children felt. They stopped contacting both parents for a long while. During their prison sentence, John tried to use Anne to gain attention in the media, and was pretty much a self-centered person. Meanwhile, Anne finally had the opportunity to be left alone to reflect on her actions and questioned her husband in the past. She realized that John doesn’t even love her anymore long before they were caught, and decided to move on with her children and family after she was released from prison. Not excusing her behavior, but I understand why she felt that way.

I was in prison with her. I remember everyone in the prison was talking about this case when we heard that she was on the induction wing. (That is the wing everyone goes on when you first go to prison and you stay on there for the first week before you go to the main prison area) she never got out on the main wing area which was C & D wing she got put on protection straight away. She got put on G wing which was the enhanced wing. That was for those that had been seen to be model prisoners. Soo they got special privileges that the main wing didn’t get. We were all pissed at that. Cause it takes ages to earn that normally and she got it right from the start just because her case was high profile. She also always has a prison guard with her everywhere she went. Say like when she went from her wing to her job (Which yes she also automatically got off the best jobs which was working visitation. So she would work at the cafeteria during visitation. Clean up afterwards things like that) so yeah all the girls were super pissed at the special treatment she was getting. The little interaction that we did end up getting with her she just always came off as stuck up and kinda entitled. Like she expected to get all the special treatment she was getting. She laughed about what her and her husband did she definitely wasn’t sorry about it. This was Low Newton prison for anyone curious. Also at that same time, not sure if any of you remember Baby P’s vile, pathetic, evil excuse for a mother came in as well. And I can tell you she did not get the same treatment. Her treatment was much more ‘specialised/customised’ Just for her. Her time in prison was very much hell on earth. Even the prison guards would make it as awful as possible for it. Oh I tell a lie, the only thing that they basically had to do for her was, obviously she couldn’t get put on the main C & D wing with us as she wouldn’t have made it through the night, (everyone was out for blood with her and rightly so) soo they had to put her on the nonce wing (A wing) but that was the only thing. She got many a beatings I’m sure you will be glad to hear. She even got boiling sugar water thrown on her. Don’t know where she is now or what prison she is in, if she is still in prison that is. As I can’t remember what her sentence was. So she could even possibly be out now. As this was back in 2007/08 Though I really hope not.

Heard about this before. He’d basically made a secret apartment in his house so that his wife could claim his life insurance and they could live off of it. His side of the story was that he’d gone fishing and his rowboat had turned over in the river and he’d allegedly drowned. Eventually he found out the hard way that it wasn’t sustainable when he went out of the house and his neighbours saw him. I don’t remember if he was taking the bins out or if he was going to the shop but the police were called and he and his wife went down for insurance fraud.

A few years ago there was a TV drama about this case. The husband was a fantasist and manipulator. He bit more than he could chew, he was heavily indebted due to the mortgages he took out on his homes. He got his poor wife to lie to his sons and friends, and was even staying in the house when his sons visited despite thinking he was dead. The true victim was his wife who had to suffer not just going to jail for the deception, but was ostracised by her sons who refused to see her for years.

This is heartbreaking for the sons. I lost my mum at 16 and have recurring nightmares that she faked her death (for no reason but crazy brainshit). These sobs lived it.
Imagine seeing your deceased father in the middle of the night !!

Man, I'd give anything to discover my deceased loved ones were just living upstairs.
Imagine thinking your dad died and when you stay at their home, you think you feel his spirit nearby (maybe you catch a whiff of their cologne or hear something or just instinctively sense their presence) not knowing it’s because he’s actually alive and hiding in the house. Creepy!
Google canoe man for the full story and itv documentary. It's my hometown he did it for the insurance money.
