Tension has very little to do with enhancing sound amplification. Form stiffness (curvature) does. It changes the natural frequency of the board at which it resonates. Tension is a myth. Tension is a by-product of curvature, but it is not so that tension is the main goal. The correct curvature , thickness, board dimensions and rib spacing determine the natural frequency of the sound board. Not the tension. Compare it to a singing saw: the higher the curvature, the stiffer the blade, the higher its natural frequency and consequently the tone. But much too many parrot the tension story, because they heard it somewhere and they did not think for themselves. But the story is wrong. Anyhow, one can build the perfect piano without knowing why it is perfect. It is called practical experience by and trial and error. Some think that the more tension the better, but once the compression exceeds the load bearing capacity of the wood, the sound board will be essentially destroyed from within in humid conditions. And when humidity falls, we will see cracks. And after some time, the piano sounds like it is made from cardboard.

I think a piano that responds to the touch back to you and you feel like one , is a wonderful instrument.

I love seeing and hearing that these instruments are still created by hands, ears, and eyes. Beautiful pianos

Pianos are such wonderful and complicated masterpieces of design. And tiny details can alter its sound and playability, greatly...

Does any one know what piece Ratko Delorko (The man with the white hair wearing glasses) is playing? I can’t for the life of me remember what it is.
