How a plate heat exchanger works with a heat pump

The traditional approach for water cylinders and heat pump has been to use a large coil of pipe to achieve good heat transfer between the wet heating system loop and the stored hot water inside. However, in recent years, several manufacturers have opted to go down the route of using a plate heat exchanger instead of a coil.
In this short animation, we explain how heat plate exchangers work and the efficiency they can achieve with a heat pump.

Why can't the hot pipe from the plate heat exchanger be at the top of the cylinder with the cold return to the plate heat exchanger? Then the cylinder will heat top down. There will still be a large heat differential between the flow (hot) to the cylinder and the return (cold). Then useful hot water is available at the taps quicker.

Hi John, many thanks for your question. The plate heat exchanger is positioned at the bottom of the cylinder and using full circulation to achieve the highest efficiency possible.
