When you think about the cuteness culture in Japan, the word “kawaii” comes to mind. The word, which signals more of a childlike sense of cute, came about in the 70s and it’s been used globally ever since. And Sanrio, the company that created Hello Kitty, has built an empire around the “kawaii” culture. Cuteness is a reaction. In Japan, the kawaii culture and concept is often linked to the country’s post-WWII years. The idea is that, because of its trauma and defeat, the country leaned into its vulnerability. Decades later- Sanrio’s new face of kawaii is an egg yolk with depression, questioning life.

    The idea of putting a positive attitude on something that is pessimistic,lazy depressed is interesting. Its not like romanticizing depression but like making it not so scary or serious. When we vilify negative emotions we're more likely to try to escape them. But discomfort or uncomfortable emotions should be felt and seen as just as normal emotions. Forced optimism can be toxic too.

    Garfield, to my memory, has never been melancholy. His laziness is more an expression of contentment cuz he knows Jon will feed him, and the TV will always be there. Gudetama is pessimistic, but in a way that all of us can relate to at some level and at some point in our lives. But, unlike American representations of pessimism as something you need to get rid of, or is negative, here the melancholy inspires empathy.

    As a Japanese, I have to asay that more than 50% of what Vox mentioned about Japan is incorrect. They alway set a goal first and correct the evidence what the want to have. One of the goals is the WW2. It's a well-known evidence that Seisho-nagon, who is a writer more than 1000 years ago, wrote that "Every small thing is Kawaii." What she said includes almost every meaning of today's usage of Kawaii. Childlike? No! There are so many non-kawaii kids. You need to read Makurano-Soshi to understant the true meaning of Kawaii.

Which means that you can be cute *and* lazy at the same time." As opposed to what? We consider cats, pandas, sloths, koalas, etc. to be cute and their laziness to be cute as well. There isn't a connection. This seems to be a habit of western thought recently , it seems as if many read far too much into pop culture distraction. It has it's benefits , like with the creation of phenomenal television shows , but it has it's downsides , with pop stars trying to be more than they are etc. You can joke about the like of "akb48" and the terrible variety tv show , but at least they know that they are nothing more than meaningless distraction , they are not trying to be anything more than that. It's like everything has to have some kind of deeper underlying meaning , whereas the eastern mindset with these things is to just create something that is entertaining. This egg is a corporate creatiion , it is the product of the heavily consumerist society of japan , it's just a silly egg that can be put on to merchandise , and if it sells it sells. that is the meaning.

This video over-analyzes not because that's how western culture is, it's because it's a youtube video and they need to make it interesting and as long as they can to increase your watch time. It's not because western culture thinks "everything has to have some kind of deeper underlying meaning."

    Japan’s fondness for kawaii things existed for centuries, even before ww2. Why do western medias always think that every single Japanese culture/trends started after 1945? And why is it necessary to go all the way back to the 1940s to explain the origins of a character that was made in the 21st century?

  • @Ikaros23

    @Ikaros23

    Because they are ignorant and lazy. I have seen the same analysis of manga alot of time, but reality is that making cartoons and depicting things in caricatures are as old as the hills. I think it often comes from a fact that in the west there is often a nasjonalistic undertone in all analysis of art. In Japan almost all art and culture even Buddhism came from India, but they have made it their own " brand". In the west most often people like to think that a cultural product is 100% German, French, American etc. They can`t handle the fact that almost no product, or cultural trend is 100% from just one place. Even spageti and gunpowder started in China. So i think they like easy and lazy explanasjons like " After ww2 bla bla bla", tracing a trend backwards 150-200 years is to complex. And there is also a tendency to brand a product " french" , " japanese" etc when in reality the product is a expresjon of itself. But people want simple explainasjons like " this product is made in japan" it is in this style etc and this was common after ww2. This adapting of other cultures is common all over the world. But in Japan this is more common known. In Europa and USA it is hidden, and people who don`t know history is often made to think more narrow and simplistic about art and how it is created, and how inspirasjon travels around the world and make unike new products/trends. As far as i can see this cartoon or cartoons has nothing to do with ww2. American cartoons where made legal in Japan after ww2, but they did have manga and a advanced cartoon industry way before USA. The had printers, and artisans who made them. The only interesting analysis in the video was the analysis of how emotions is different in American Disney and in Japanese cartoons. The reason for this is that in Japan there is the consept of " wabi-sabi" and " Zen" where the melancoly and sad has a whole other status than it has in the west, where it is seen as mostly toxic and anti social. You can trace this consept 100-300-500 years backwards in Japanese art, even in the depiction from " The tales of Genji".

In fact, there is almost no US influence to it. Japan has had the culture of adoring things for thousand years. From cherry blossoms, birds, to a hair of a little girl... these are written in the world's first essay written by a female. I really hate it when media reports nonsense and be really patronizing.

    They didn't explain it clear enough about the relation: Post world war meant that the entire society needed to drop everything and become adults quickly to rebuild the country. Hence that spurred out their heavy work ethic and self-sacrificial attitude. But with this attitude the longing for a more 'innocent' time (like a throw back to a time where they were young, innocent without any responsibilities and pressures) was desirable and contrasting to their realities, hence Kawaii became such a thing (in terms of beauty and lifestyle).

    comparing american cuteness and japanese cuteness on the general consensus that most viewers are american, therefore will be able to make an easier transition from what is usually portrayed as cute here compared to another culture. that’s it m8. attention is key. mention of wwII is using the idea of cuteness to help overcome trauma and sadness, using it as something that’s small yet relatable that puts a smile on your face, as simply having a happier mood has an incredible impact on motivation and moving forward.

    I thought conquered as in "took over Japan and tried to establish it's own government", I'm not sure how an egg could do that... but that's what I thought when reading the title

    honestly seeing stuff with cute faces on it is the best. toast? put a cute face on it. washing machine? put a cute face on it. poop? put a cute face on it there is definitely something so comforting about it that brings me joy. also the same with sparkly stuff/rainbows/unicorns
